  • SWMS tomorrow night

I know its only an exhibition game but I'd like to see us take it to a team that embarassed some of the players still on this Jack's squad 2 years ago. Each win for this young squad will be important towards building their confidence. I can't make it to Brookings tomorrow night but I'll be listening to WNAX.

I should be at Frost on the 16th for the Idaho game. How great it is to have Jack's basketball starting while the FB team is still in the thick of things.

Southwest probably will take it quite serious after our football additions helped us defeat them last year.

Look for a starting line up of Caddy, Kleinjan, Williams, Engen, and Hornby/Casey/Frias.

Small line-up, must be planning to run and gun. I expect everyone to see some time on the court regardless of the score.

I'm not sure if this is the appropriate place to mention this but here it goes anyway.

I know the game is on Halloween and I will be out with the little one getting candy, but I wish that the game was pod-casted. That way I could listen to the game at my leisure. I would like to see all of the men's and women's broadcasts pod-casted. That way I don't have to schedule my personal life around the games and can listen to them when I want. I don't know if the university would be responsible for setting this up or WNAX. I would even be willing to pay a nominal fee to listen when I want.

          Go State!!! 8-) 8-) 8-)

I believe that SDSU owns the rights to the broadcast, and if they really wanted to, could put it into an mp3 for podcasting.

It's probably an issue of having some student/intern convert it to a podcast format, and then having sufficient disk space and internet bandwidth to host it. (These shouldn't be insurmountable issues, but . . . )

I've often thought the same thing, that would be great if they could get something like that done.

Time to get Jacked up (and not in a Tom Jackson sort of way, if you know what I mean . . . )

                From the SMSU web site:
Leading the list of returning players this season is 6-2 junior guard Matt Fletcher (North Branch, Minn.), who earned second team All-NSIC honors a season ago. Fletcher, who led the team in scoring with 13 points per game, shot 49.8 percent from the field (121 of 243) and 48 percent from three-point range (84 of 175), which ranked fourth in NCAA II. His 2.9 three-point field goals made per game last season ranked 26th in the final NCAA statistics. Fletcher finished second in the conference in field goal percentage (56.5), second in three-point field goal percentage (50.0), second in three-point field goals made (40) and ninth in scoring (14.0).

Also back are two senior players who begin their fourth year in the SMSU program. At the center position, 6-9 Jeremy VanKlompenburg (Canby, Minn.) started 15 games last season and finished third on the team averaging 10.2 points per game. He tied for the team lead in field goal percentage at 49.8 percent (104 of 209) and had a team-high 26 blocked shots. He begins the 2006-07 season with 80 career blocked shots and needs 25 to tie the school record. The other fourth-year senior returning this season is 6-6 forward Chad Orum (LeRoy, Minn.) who led the squad in rebounding with 5.5 rebounds per game and was fourth on the team averaging 9.9 points per game. Orum finished the season shooting 48.8 percent from the field (102-209) and led the team with three double-doubles.

Another senior who looks to make a major impact is 6-3 guard Nic Hogan (Pierre, S.D.). Hogan, who missed all of last season with an injury, averaged 12.3 points per game in 2004-05, connected on a team-high 91 three-pointers and started all 30 games. Hogan[ch65533]s 43.1 percent shooting from three-point range ranked him 20th in the final NCAA statistics while his 3.0 three-point field goals per game ranked 34th in the nation.

The final senior on the 2006-07 roster is 6-7 forward Darren Solbrack (Blomkest, Minn.). In his first season in the program a year ago, Solbrack played in 20 games (he missed nine with an injury) averaging 3.1 points and 2.0 rebounds per game. He played double figure minutes in five of the last eight games which included scoring a career-high 13 points in SMSU[ch65533]s first round victory over Wayne State in the NSIC tournament.

Rounding out the upperclassmen for the Mustangs is 6-2 junior guard Travis Krenske (Fairbault, Minn.). After redshirting during the 2004-05 season, Krenske made a major impact on the squad a year ago finishing second on the team in scoring with 12.1 points per game while finishing second with 66 three-point field goals. Krenske shot a team-high 84.5 percent from the free throw line (71 of 84) and also led the team with 35 steals. He tied a pair of SMSU single-game records last season as his 13 for 13 free throw shooting in a win over Concordia tied the school record for percentage and free throws made.

A trio of sophomores should once again make big impacts this season after getting valuable playing time a season ago. 5-10 guard Ryan Krome (Mitchell, S.D.) played in all 29 games last season and dished out 24 assists, while 5-11 guard Andy Beilke (Mankato, Minn.) saw action in 28 games averaging 2.2 points and recording 32 assists. The third sophomore on the roster is 6-9 forward Ross DeMasi (Swanton, Vt.), who is a starting wide receiver on the SMSU football team and will join the basketball program following the completion of the football season on Nov. 11. Last season, DeMasi played in 28 games making 10 starts and averaged 4.5 points per game, finished second on the team with 4.4 rebounds per game, while shooting 54.8 percent from the field (46 of 84).

Two redshirt freshmen, 6-6 guard Andrew Peschong (Marshalltown, Iowa) and 6-10 center Nick Dale (Cottage Grove, Minn.) could see valuable minutes this season after sitting out last season as redshirts. Peschong averaged 16 points, five rebounds and nearly five assists per game in leading his high school team to the section final as a senior, while Dale earned all-conference honors as a senior.

SMSU has four newcomers joining the program for the 2006-07 season with two expected to see time this winter. 6-4 true freshman guard Kevin Andrews (Marion, Iowa) should see extended time this winter after helping lead his high school team to three straight Iowa Class 3A state tournament appearances while finishing his career as the school's all-time leading scorer with 1,199 points and grabbing 587 career rebounds. Another newcomer is 6-5 freshman guard Zach Bruns (Marshall, Minn.) who joins the team after sitting out last season. Bruns was an all-conference performer in high school and adds depth to the guard position.

                  Re: SWMS tomorrow night

I don't know if this is the appropriate place for this post or not, so I apologize if I put it in the wrong place!

First about me, I am a long time reader of this board, and decided today to post a couple of questions to more knowledgeable fans about the basketball team about some concerns me and a couple of my co-workers (SDSU grads) have had about the basketball team.

                  1. I read on this thread that Callahan has broken his hand. Why are their so many injuries on our basketball team (mens)? In the last couple of years we have had: Wenig break a foot, Callahan break a hand, Shantz tear an ACL, Holdren tear an ACL, Jones come down with a weird aliment ending his career, plus a ton of other injuries that I can't even remember. Does Nagy just run the team hard in practices, leading to these kind of injuries, or have we just been subject to an incredible string of bad luck? I have brought up a few I remember from the D-II years just to point out how long this string of injuries has lasted. Most teams lose one or two guys in this same time frame, not the 5-10 that I think I remember.

                  2. Does anybody know anything solid about the new signings we have made? I really am not trying to bring down anybody, and I will point out before I say anymore that I have no idea about these recruits, but the signing of two highschool sophomores really troubles me. Does anybody know about these kids? I really didn't imagine when we went D-I that we were going to be signing 2 players from the same class in Madison SD. Most years there isn't a single player in class A that is a legit D-I prospect, but this year there are two of them in the same highschool? Again, maybe they are, but I don't know how you can even evaluate talent when they are that young. And this could go either way, I mean, those two could grow another 4-5 inches (I did after my sophomore year) and be some of the best 6,9-6,10 players the state has ever seen. They could also stop developing this season, and we will have used two scholarships that could be badly needed for unforeseen problems in the future i.e. our guards not developing, more size, etc. Has anybody seen them play? Is their upside that great that we risk signing them as sophmores?

Sorry my first post is negative, these are just some questions I had!

I've said it before on this board. I really believe the 2 are still longshots. We have not signed them yet. They have verballed that they will attend SDSU. I think there is quite a difference.

                      1. Nagy runs his practices as hard as high school practices and as hard as AJ and the girls practice. Garrett's injury was a freak deal, I was watching practice as it happens and it was weird. Jones got lyme disease. Holdren, Schantz, and Weinig's injuries were during games and you can't control what happens in a game.

                      2. I don't know much about these guys so someone else who has more details fill us in.

                        Re: SWMS tomorrow night

They are both tall, athletic kids that had great summers for thier respective summer programs. White played for the Schoolers and Fiegen played for the ECI Select team. This year, they will both play for the Schoolers.

SDSU got to them early, becuase if they hadn't, I think you would have seen alot more interest in them in the coming years.

Both wanted to play close to home, and Fiegen has grown up a Jacks fan along with his dad.

I think they are great signings, and see both of them coming to the Jacks and contributing when the time comes.

No scholarships have been used, these are verbal commitments.  Some are critical when we recruit talent outside the state and yet when we lose a guy to a regional school people are quick to point that out.  Now, when we get verbals from 2 of the best prospects in any of the next 3 in-state classes someone jumps on here and is critical.

Not to mention starting with some insane post about unfortunate injuries and an undefined illness that took a career away from a fantastic basketball player and a great young man.  I gotta say I don't like the tone from this guy/gal but thats just me.  I like to see my school sign the best the state has to offer right now and I know Coach Nagy runs a clean program with the kids as the number one priority.

Are you sure your a SDSU fan?  You sound a lot like a skeptic with this post and the one under the UC-Davis thread. I suggest you ask Coach Nagy, Garret, Matt, Scott, and Derek if they think anyone in the program had anything to do with their injuries/illness. Sorry to say this but those are ridiculous questions in my mind.

Calm down, as I said, those were some questions that me and some co-workers were discussing.

I don't really understand why you think it was "Insane" to bring up the recent rash of injuries on the team (or for that matter, why, if I was trying to discredit SDSU or its teams I would use injuries on a team to do so)? Surely as a doctor, you're aware of reasons why athletic injuries, or any injury occurs- too much stress, or over use. Some of the causes for that could have been practices that are too extreme, or perhaps an insufficient weight lifting program, or one that doesn't do enough exercises to help with joint strength and muscle flexibility. Perhaps it is just a string of weird injuries, I don't know, I was just asking the question. Next time I'll keep my crazy rantings to myself.

I'm not excited just wondering why, as one of your intitial posts, you would ask a question that no one on this site can answer. Perhaps I was a bit harsh and for that I apologize. I may be a doctor but I have nothing to do with the care of these athletes and therefore have little more insight than anyone else here.

My apologies for sounding contrite. The injuries are frustrating to say the least. The progress of the men's BB program at the DI level is frustrating to say the least. As a diehard Jack's BB fan for the last 20 plus years I must admit that I am a little sensitive right now. Please understand but also be aware of the potential inference of your post.
