DC was a great coach from what I heard but I think Hansen will be better.... Sometimes you need a guy who knows what it means to play for SDSU and for Nagy when recruiting and handling players.... I think he will help the players handle situations a lot better because he was there himself....
I guess I was under the impression Klink was our main recruiter???
Exactly!!!! For a Rabbit living in hell, it's good to see you still have your smarts Austin is nothing but an upgrade for OUR coaching staff; it's just a matter of how big of an upgrade!
I'm surprised TV has not addressed the apparent Men's Basketball Coaching situation in his blog.
Just checked his blogs, and still nothing even after the Empire Staters meeting in SF this week. When Wilkensen, the FB assistant resigned, it was immediate news, and why would there not be the same type of press release for Daryl C? Has he really resigned and is off to Indiana State to rejoin his old coach McKenna? I get the McKenna connection and it seems like this would be DC's choice. In my opinion DC has a big future ahead of himself.
My choice would be to add Austin and keep Daryl, but maybe the budget will not allow that.
I dont think Mark Engen would have been able to give the minutes that he did this season, without a good coach like Daryl. I like Mark a great deal, but admit he is a bit of a project. He seems to be a good citizen and a good student, but I dont think his high school coach helped prepare him much for D1. Mark too, probably grew very fast in his teen years, which makes it hard for any coach.
Of all the good coaches in the NCC, I think McKenna gave Nagy the biggest challenge in opponent coaching so if DC indeed has left, I wish him best, but express my regrets.

Steve Imming reports DC has left to join Mckenna at Indiana State. I visited with DC several times and he is a very nice/personable man. I wish him the best of luck.
We are here to add what we can to life, not get what we can from life. -Sir William Osler
We do not see things as they are, we see things as we are.
Terry made some good points about having friends in high places with our departures going on to better jobs. I could not agree more. Sounds like recruiting is more of an issue in Coach Nagy's view than hiring somone who can work with post players. Those comments kind of open the path for hire of Austin Hansen.
Could Mr. Hansen be the right choice? Maybe, but just because he was a great Jackrabbit player does not mean to me that he is hands down the correct choice because the position is for assistant coach, not point guard. However, I know he has used up his eligibility as a player, but maybe eligibility as a player-coach could get him back on the floor.
You can't teach an old dog new tricks, but you can never teach a stupid dog anything.
In my opinion I think we need to get an assistant who has played under Nagy, a guy who understands the system and how Nagy wants things done..... DC was a great coach from everything I had heard about the guy but I think we need to get a younger guy that has played under Nagy to help with the player development.....
Nagy says the most important factor is getting an assistant with ability to help recruit. I'll buy that. Success starts with attracting talented players.

I completely agree with your post 1st row. If Austin is the right coach for the job so be it & he will have the support of Jackrabbit nation. However, I don't think we should be so hasty in our hiring. Sometimes its important to see things with new eyes and new ideas. Lets just look at the most recent hirings at SDSU. Coach Brewer in VB from Darmouth, New Mexico. Footballs last hirings - Clark with exp at UCLA and Vandy. Garvis from U of Rhode Is- Bubak from Missouri Western. Baseball with Reggie from Kansas State. Lane from softball was at Florida St, GA and UNI and brings in an asst from Depaul. Even Equistrain has McGee from Fresno St and an asst from So. Carolina. Lets let this thing play itself out before we judge just who should fill those open spots on our Men's BB team. I don't think we have much room for error at this point. So, lets not be to hasty. Can we find a quality Coach with national experience? Other sports have proven we can.

Go big, go blue, go Jacks
The way I understand the process head coach will do the hiring, but the position has to be advertised. I would hope Coach Nagy is doing a national search besides having his own short list, which I presume includes Austin Hansen. Yes we have had some great hires for assistants in various sports and this will continue.
I agree though that haste makes waste and so it is even with Asssitant coaches.
