Actually, it's quite easy to measure whether a loss to SDSU is worse. It's not.

I wrote the reporter and his editor a short email about how he's entitled to his "cutting analysis" but that line is way, way over the top. I'm not sure the reporter knows that those two teams will be in the same conference next year. I wonder if he saw that against common opponent UNI, UMKC lost by 32 and SDSU by 13. Jeez. A little homework, please.

There is the argus story on last night's game.  I thought this was quite interesting:

Without undersized center Michael Loney, who will have knee surgery today and miss at least two weeks
I don't know if this is a typo or if we've been reporting something wrong on here.  Hopefully this is the case and we will get Loney back a lot sooner than we thought we were going to.

Between the Argus story and this week's press release from SDSU, and what I saw courtside, I would have to say that we will see Loney back this season. I saw him at the game and he did have a little hitch in his giddy up, but he was moving around much better then I expected for someone with a "torn ACL". I even commented to Ozark_Jack that the board reports must be wrong about Loney. That is why I caution people all the time, be careful what you post and be careful about your sources. A lot of times those "little birds" may not have the story right.

Best of luck to Michael with his surgery, get better soon.

I think he was too busy trying to support his theme -- that it was a disappointing and embarrassing loss -- to bother with what actually was happening in front of him. If he worked for me, I'd be chewing his rear end out right now. It's a problem when reporters foul up an 8" story that was probably the only thing he was assigned all day yesterday. Not a good sign for future success in the newsroom.

              Here's David Boyce's (dboyce@kcstar.com) response:

"It was bad because you guys had two starters out and your leading scorer
fouled out and you are 3-10, which is a very bad record.

Park University would have beaten the South Dakota State team I saw. Central
Missouri, a Division II team, would beat you guys by 10 to 15 points.

Plus, this story was about UMKC poor play."

I suppose he deserves credit for responding at all. And in his defense, reporters have to get a lot of context into a very short story like that.

This Boyce  guy's comments are kind of assine to say the least. I havent paid much attention to D2 basketball this year so have no idea how good Central Missouri is except they have not ruled the MIAA conference for awhile. I found last night's SDSU win a release from built up frustrations and doubts about the SDSU program. That said one win is not going to change everyone's preception of our program. Park University used to be Park College, and was the alma mater of the doctor who brought me and many others into the world, namely the late Dr. Alanzo Peek, who practiced medicine for decades in Volga and the surrounding area. In fact two of his sons played some BB for Park. Its was years ago and the Peek sons were very average and Park did not have much of a program at that time. In fact they were very lucky to say that they played college ball. Apparently things have changed considerably at Park University since the time they played.

I feel better now about our guys, and we still have a huge mountain to climb in order to gain respect. We are moving forward though. It was  good team work flowing last night and that is what we need. The true freshman are coming on and progressing very quickly and you would hope they grow together as a playing unit.

I am going to modify this post since I just saw the latest D2 poll and Central Missouri is No 3 and 9-0, but I think we could still beat them if we played as a unit like we did last night.

Let them say what they want because we have been struggling but I would guess that this stuff could possibly provide some bulletin board material for the conference games next year.

I could see UMKC being a mini-rival in the Mid-Con!

Hofpefully, this win will bolster our team for the next few games and through the holiday break!

                  Great win guys!

No offense, but I can see why they would be dissapointed in losing to us. We did only have 3 wins and had one of the lowest RPI ratings in DI. I'd be dissapointed if I was a fan of their team too, although the NAIA reference was a shot, I can't blame a beat writer for making the reference, its his job to get people talking about things, and well, here we are talking about it

I agree with Jacks02. I think this team can get better, and in a couple years with the right additions could be good. But right now they aren't, mainly due to circumstances out of the players control, and if I was a UMKC or Montana St fan, I would be very upset losing to us. Mt State has to be thinking that if they lose to us after the results from the Montana game, not a good thing. What the Jacks need is to beat Mt State, get an actual winning streak going and build to when the injured heal.

I know the RPI is not very accurate before Christmas, but UMKC is ranked 283 (after their loss to us) while Montana State is ranked 319.  As a reference, Montana is at 183, UW-Green Bay is 138, and Minnesota is 204.  So I think Friday's game is very winnable.

With that said I can see why the UMKC beat writer felt the way he did.  UMKC was picked #3 in the Mid-Con, we have two starters out with injuries, and they are at home. I am sure he expected more from the team he covers.

My final thought on the UMKC game . . . I feel I was a bit hard on Jose Frias in my first post-game quote. He did a very good job taking charge of the team on the court, especially after Cadwell fouled out in OT. In short, he did what you want a senior leader to do in a situation like that. I'm not sure we win if he doesn't take charge of the team, settle it down on the court, and allow the Jacks to run their offense.

I will add that I have been impressed with Frias all year. Yes, he still has his "what the heck are you doing" moments when he seems out of control driving to the bucket, but overall his play and leadership has been much improved from what we saw last year. Even his postgame comments have impressed me.

Congrats to the boys, they played hard. If we keep competing we should be OK this year.

Our Men's team is down right now and is probably at it's lowest point that I can remember (kind of a complement 'cuz they've been so good for so long). However, if UMKC was picked 3rd in the Mid-Con what does that say about our new conference? I was assuming that it would take us a few years to compete after joining the conference, but if the Roos were picked 3rd it would seem we'd be right there in the middle of the pack. I know one game isn't a good judge of how we'd fit into the conference, but I was assuming UMKC was the doormat of the league.
