What I am getting at is who is going to be on scholarship next year.
So we take 11-2 for walk ons then -2 more for seniors and we have 6 plus 2 redshirt players or freshman that arn't suiting up for other reasons that gives up 8 plus 2 we have signed for next year and there is 10. plus 2 walk ons again that gives us a 12 man roster next year. That is a lil small I really think we need those football players or other players in general or walk ons or something because until we have a 15 man roster 13 scholarship 2 walk ons were going to have the same old story. If we only have 10 players who can practice how can the team run any drills? If I was the football coach I would have some players out there just practicing with the team to get them into shape, it must not of did too much harm to those football players.
Joeboo, you want to see what the football players do to stay in shape over the winter?  Run over to the HPER at 6 am on a Mon, Tues, Thurs or Fri when school starts back up again.   I assure you they are plenty busy preparing for next season.

I'm shure the football team is working hard, but with my experience in sports and other athletes would probally agree with me atleast on the hs level that you do more and get more out of you when you have an organized practice. I also say this; having the 2,3,4 or however many football players played last year couldn't of hurt the team much considering the season they had. Do the Jacks offer roster spots to walk-ons, I know they have 2 but one was blake yackley who is a non traditional walk-on. What I mean is do they have like try-outs for walkon spots? because I heard that Wipf?? asked and Nagy said he could join after seeing how short his bench was.

Scott has always tried to hold a spot for a walk-on who wanted to try out for the team. That's where Heien came from, although he had transferred in to school before he knew that.

That was probably more true when he had fewer scholarships and could still have a couple of spots for walk-ons, but I know it is his philosophy to do that, and that's probably why Troy Wipf is on the team. Again, they need the practice bodies as well.

The fact of the matter is this isn't high school. The players were recruited here for one sport and that should be their main focus. What if one of our star players tore an ACL playing basketball or something serious? The coaches are leary about letting their players do other sports or intramurals. Now I know some of the athletes are on intramural teams for fun. Does the risk of getting hurt should maybe outweigh the rewards? I say yes, but I am not the one who has any authority to tell the players what to do.

The offseason is where great players are made - no matter what sport. All players practice the same amount during the season - the better players usually are the ones who put more time in during the offseason - Ex. Larry Bird, Cris Carter, etc.

Tell me one high school player that didn't work in the off-season that made it to the D1 level - It may happen, but that athlete is rare and extremely gifted. Most have to work daily just to get to the point they are at.

If some of these football players were to play basketball, they would have no time to work on football.

I wouldn't mind seeing them play to help out, but I don't fault anyone for not wanting them do it. Like Bluehatman said, the risks probably outweigh the rewards.

Here is where I think you are wrong, ok Mike Steffens one of those football players who played bball last year played for the schoolers durring the summer a basketbal team, a basketball team in which chad greenway and josh heipel both D-1 football players played for. I understand that most profesionals didn't play 2 sports in college (but how many pros are on any sports team at state??)you can say peppers and curry did but they quit basketball for the tarheels before there senior year, Matt Jones did play basketball for arkansas. Every year there are athletes who play duel sports and do it well and I think if you ask most of them they would say that it helped them physically for the other sport. I understand that a football coach would be hesitant to allow his players to play other sports but if you are going to not do it because of injuries unless a kid is injury prone I think that is dumb. Because you could slip and get hurt walking to class or get hurt in your offseason work outs.

With a limit of 13 scholarships and, in normal circumstances, some of those scholarship players redshirted, a team would seem to need several good walk-ons every year to fill out its roster and practice squad. Injuries and transfers, which also are a routine part of the college game, add to the need. Maybe walk-ons are invitees. Maybe they earn a scholarship after a year or two. I don't know. But I suspect that attracting high-caliber walk-ons is very important to ongoing success.

I asked Andy this afternoon at practice and Andy said about 2 more weeks or so. So things aren't as bad as they really could be, I.e. last year.

It is my understanding that on our current team we have 4 "Walk-ons".  Two were invited but will not need an athletic scholarship because their school is being paid for by non-athletic means (I will call them non-traditional walk-ons), one was an invited walk-on (whom I would guess would like to compete for an athletic scholarship which I will call an invitee), and one is a traditional walk on (a kid who wants to be on the team but will not be competing for a scholarship, I will classify this type as "traditional&quot.

Mackenzie Casey & Blake Yackley are the non-traditional

Ryan Hoogeveen is the invitee and is red shirting

                        Troy Wipf is the traditional

From what I can tell they all seem to be doing a fine job for State given their talent levels and realistic expectations.  It seems to me that our Walk-on program is strong.

It is my understanding that there is a possibility of us gaining a walk on after semester break in a position that is lacking of depth.

Well what I am getting at is the majority of D-1 recruits could play other sports at the D-II/NAIA level and were the best athlete in more then one sport in there school. So what I am getting at is they didn't become D-1 recruits focussing just on 1 sport.

89, you're right about the contributions that walk-ons have made. Casey and Yackley have been big contributors to this team and hopefully will continue to be in the future.
BlueHat, thanks for the updates on the players. I hope you're right about the possibility of another walk-on joining the team soon.
Loney and Kleinjan definitely are missed. Hopefully they're quick healers.
