From Jay Bilas' ESPN blog stating that Butler is the best of the Mid-Major teams.

Butler: The Bulldogs have really good guards and a good experience level, and if you foul this team, it will knock down its free throws. A.J. Graves is an outstanding shooter who can really find openings. He also leads the team in steals. Mike Green leads the team in rebounding and assists, and Brandon Crone can play inside and out. Butler has beaten Notre Dame, Indiana, Tennessee, Gonzaga and Purdue, and there are few teams, if any, that Butler cannot beat. Will the Bulldogs get clipped a few times in the Horizon League? Probably, but this team will be in the NCAA Tournament, and can win there.
Looks like the men will have their hands full!

Any team that takes the floor can be beaten. It's on the schedule. Might as well play the game.

I say "SDSU IS GOING TO WIN!" They are going to go into Hinkle Fieldhouse (where Hoosiers was taped) and pull out the upset. Coach Nagy should pull out some lines from Hoosiers.

So much for sneaking up on them . . . guess our guys will just have to go out and beat them straight up then!

I must assume (which is dangerous) that no one expects us to go into Butler and beat a top 25 team.  If you do, wake up!!  We are no where near beating a team like Bulter even if its a fluke.  Be realistic.  We are a fledging DI program that has not achieved all that it could at this point for various reasons.  We should not compete with a team like Butler.   I look forward to our guys playing their hardest when undermanned against a very good team.

Garrett vs Graves should be an interesting match up on defense for us... They leave tomorrow at 8 for Indiana. Practice and film and a good nights rest, let's keep this respectable and maybe pull out a W.

                      Learning his role
Freeport’s Willie Veasley is coming off the bench strong for No. 12 Butler.

Former Freeport standout Willie Veasley thought he would slowly work his way into the mix at Division-I Butler, and although he knew the Bulldogs would be good, he figured it might take some time for this team to come around as well.

He was wrong on both counts.

Veasley has surprised himself, stepping in to become a force off the bench as a true freshman. And the Butler men’s basketball team has surprised a lot of people with a 14-1 start and climbing to a No. 12 ranking in the latest top-25 polls.

“I knew that with my work ethic and my passion for the game that I could show the coaches I could help the team. But they told me in the beginning that my minutes would come here and there, and there were no guarantees. I didn’t think it would happen this quick, that’s for sure,” said Veasley, who is averaging 15.1 minutes, 2.5 points and 2.9 rebounds a game for the surprising Bulldogs. “It’s been exciting playing on this team. I’m trying to just keep doing what I’ve been doing, and getting better. It’s hard not to get all caught up in things sometimes, though. I mean, we’re 14-1 man.” . . . (read more)

INDIANAPOLIS - The South Dakota State University men's basketball team returns today to Hinkle Fieldhouse, the building where it debuted as an NCAA Division I program less than three seasons ago.

But SDSU doesn't return to Indianapolis with the program coach Scott Nagy hoped to have.

After winning 56 of their final 73 games in Division II, the Jackrabbits (4-12) have lost 50 of 73 since, including an ugly pair against Hinkle inhabitant Butler (14-2), ranked No. 12 in the latest Associated Press poll. . . . (read more)

Butler won't help its RPI with a victory today over lowly South Dakota State

A home victory today over South Dakota State would harm Butler's Bulldogs more than Wednesday's defeat at Illinois-Chicago.

"They're going to lose by winning," said Joe Lunardi, who projects the NCAA Tournament bracket for ESPN.com.

Such is the nature of the Ratings Percentage Index, a tool used by the NCAA to select and seed its national basketball tournaments.

The RPI has been revised since its creation in 1981, but the formula remains essentially the same. Twenty-five percent of the rating is based on a team's record, 25 percent on opponents' records and 50 percent on opponents' opponents' records.

Point spread is not part of the calculation. The new formula weighs road victories at 1.4 and home victories at 0.6.  .  .  .  (read more)

I thought this was interesting and would help our chances
Junior guard A.J. Graves might not play today after having wisdom teeth extracted Thursday. A decision will be made shortly before the 2 p.m. tipoff.
Although if we play well enough to beat them I would rather have Graves playing.  Then people can't say "you only won because their best player was out."  I heard that a lot after our women beat USC because USC had 3 players out with injuries.  I just said in response "it's still USC and they were still nationally ranked at the time."
