CHAMNESS: Callahan finding touch at South Dakota State

At Seneca High School, Garrett Callahan finished his career as the all-time leader in points (1,710) and assists (440).

It's uncertain if Callahan will acheive those lofty stats at South Dakota State University, but he is definately making noise as a college freshman. In his last two games for the Jackrabbits, Callahan has scored a total of 29 points.

It was his best two-game stretch, thus far, and it included a career-high 16 points against the University of Missouri-Kansas City Kangaroos. He hit two field goals (one 3 -pointer) an 11-of-12 free throws. He added six assists, grabbed three rebounds and had three steals in the 79-71 win over UMKC.

He followed that performance with a 13-point effort against Montana State. Callahan, who hit 5-of-9 from the field and 2-of-2 from the charity stripe, also had four rebounds and three assists. Callahan struck twice from beyond the arc. . . . (read more)

    In flight
Callahan’s career taking off at SDSU

    By Mark Johnson
    Herald Sports Reporter

Though Garrett Callahan has played basketball since early in his childhood, his first collegiate season has brought several new challenges on the court his way.

One is that the former all-state player at Seneca High School was sidelined with a broken hand and missed four games. Another is that only months after leading the Fighting Irish to a 35-0 record and an IHSA Class A state championship, Callahan is on a South Dakota State University team with a record that currently stands at 4-15 after a loss Thursday night at home against Utah Valley State 66-54.

Callahan, who found himself in a reserve role to start the season, is back from his injury and starting for the Jackrabbits. He scored seven points on 2-of-8 shooting from the field Thursday night. But Callahan is part of a young SDSU core and has high hopes for a more successful second half of the season, both individually and from a team perspective.

"For the most part, yeah, things are getting better," Callahan said. "I need to start playing harder and doing more things for this team."  .  .  .  (read more)

      Re: Callahan story

Garrett is a fine young man. At our "Meet the Parents" night that the Back of the Bus group had, my 12 year old son ask Garrett if he would come to open gym the next day. Garrett showed up with his 11 year old brother and the 3 of them shot baskets together for nearly 3 hours. Any collegiate athlete that gives time like this back to youth is of good stock.
