Wolverines and Longwood

Wolverines walk past Longwood
Jack Jared Waters
Four Wolverines scored in double figures last Monday as UVSC humiliated Longwood University in Orem, 80-52. David Heck led all scorers with 20 points, coupled with his 6 assists.
Heck held Longwood star Maurice Sumter at bay, holding him to a mere 10 points on 4-11 shooting, seven under his season average. Coach Dick Hunsaker was impressed with Heck's defense and said, "David came out and really met a competitive challenge of trying to defend Sumter." Hunsaker lauded Heck's overall performance.
With the win, UVSC extended the all-time series against the Lancers to an impressive 5-0. From the get-go, UVSC showed dominance, which would not die down. . . . (read more)

uvsc south dakota advance
NEIL K. WARNER - Daily Herald
It's not conference play, but it's as close as Utah Valley State will get.
Tonight UVSC begins its United Basketball League play with a game at South Dakota State at 6 p.m.
The United Basketball League is an agreement among independent schools that each school will play home and away games against each other.
The league includes: North Dakota State, South Dakota State, IPFW, New Jersey Institute of Technology, and Texas-Pan American.
UVSC begins what promises to be the toughest part of its independent schedule. South Dakota State is 4-14. Its four wins have come against Arkansas State, Denver, UMKC and Montana State.
"South Dakota State has arguably played the toughest schedule out of any independent," said UVSC coach Dick Hunsaker said. "They have an outstanding player in Cadwell, an All-Independent selection from a year ago, along with a very balanced scoring attack. Coach Nagy has done a great job of building and energizing his team." . . . (read more)

Now, if only that "balance" could show up game-to-game. Inconsistent play is killing us. Its hard enough with a lack of depth and inexperience to stem those periods of time when some players just disappear. Perhaps we will see a consistent 40 minutes tonight. We are here to add what we can to life, not get what we can from life. -Sir William Osler

Another UVSC story:

Can UVSC win 20 games?
NEIL K. WARNER - Daily Herald
Do the math.
Six home games and five road games left for the UVSC men's basketball team, with 12 wins already in the books.
It's not only possible, but it's highly likely.
As Utah Valley State prepares for a two-game road trip to play North and South Dakota this weekend, the magic number is eight to reach the 20-win plateau.
UVSC, in its fourth year of Division I play, still playing on the shackles and chains of NCAA's provisional period, win 20 games?
Preposterous.
Maybe not.
The Wolverines need to go 8-3 in their final 11 games to win 20 games.
When asked about reaching the 20-win milestone, coach Dick Hunsaker refused to look that far ahead.
"We have one game to play. South Dakota State," Hunsaker said.
South Dakota is UVSC's next test. The Wolverines will play at South Dakota State on Thursday. The Jackrabbits have a 4-13 record. UVSC then plays at North Dakota State (10-6) on Saturday.
While Hunsaker may be doing his best to keep his team from looking too far ahead, Ryan Toolson, the team's leading scorer, believes the goal of a 20-win season is within reach.
"We absolutely feel like we can do it. We've been looking at the schedule. We know we're going out there and playing all the independent teams," he said. "We're sure we have a chance against every single one of them. We know that North and South Dakota have had great games against Marquette and Butler, but we still feel that we'll be able to play our own game and not get mixed into theirs, and we'll win at least 20." . . .
