    Re: Senior Night Saturday Night!

Good explanation of your position JackMD...we think alike on a lot of things, and I understand where you are at. But when I look at rabbitboy's post, I wonder what his point is...I understand someone saying he doesn't think we have good enough players recruited, but what would you propose we do right now? I'll withhold my judgment on the level of our players until the end of next year, but I don't think we can do anything about it anway right now. And I'm just not ready to feel "the sky is falling". Sorry, I posted that my earlier post would be my last comment on this subject. I am now putting this thread to bed...for me. Enjoy all posters' comments!

Good old Schantz's had 1283 what a guy who would have had many more points, but struggled at the FT line. So if thats a positive amongst the negatives, then that is it meaning Ben moving past Schantz. Ben had to work very hard to get 12 points.

It was interesting to see Centenary play. They have a number of small players who are very good. We squandered a number of opportunities, and Cordova even help the Gents with a ft tip in. Ouch thats a hard one to watch, it was for me. Next year is what we need to look to, this year is mercifully in the record books.
My mind played a trick on me. I confused Derrick Schantz with Jason Schutz who played with Kurt Miester. My bad. Time seems to fly when you get older and names and faces are all one mass at times. Just checking the media guide and Jason Schutz apparently never scored a 1000 pts in his career, but Derrick Schantz certainly did score the number Jack Up mentioned. Also I notice Ben Beran was at 928 pts at the beginning of the season so ended up with 367 pts for the season.

The more I read other comments and think about what is being said, I tend to think SDSU had more of a youth problem than a talent problem this year. So maybe we need to be patient. The Summit league games, all home games, that I watched were overwhelming in watching often more veteran teams. Maybe next year they will not appear that way and that we can compete and finish games off. I willing to bet if all the close games lost had been "W", the questions and statements out of frustration would not be made here on the board.

Nagy reiterated this point in the post game interview last night. Its a philosophy I agree with.

Yes, last night's post-game interview was my source (which I failed to credit) for my reply to packer_tatoo's post regarding the same interview.
I too, believe that this is the proper route to success. That's one reason I'm inclined to be patient and cautiously optomistic about the future.

I hate to lose; I hate to get up in the morning after a loss and there were lot's of losses this year, but most were not blow outs. Close losses and blown 2nd half leads are more frustrating, but they probably reveal more potential for future success than do games where there was never a chance. Despite the disappointment of so many losses, I didn't ever see these men quit or give up. That is another reason for hope. Perseverance generally pays off.

Thanks to Ben, Mike, and Mo for their contributions and loyalty during a difficult transition.

Anyone know why Todd DeBeer (sp?) was doing the pa for the game instead of JT?

It was Brad DeBeer, not Todd. He fills in occasionally for JT.

BROOKINGS - It couldn't have ended any other way.

In the last game of an arduous NCAA Division I reclassification process, the South Dakota State men's basketball did not gain momentum or breed hope. It missed too many shots from the field and the free-throw line, got worked over by a pair of a veteran guards, rebounded like crazy and - on its home court - blew a second-half lead in the fight not to finish last.

Not coach Scott Nagy's electric blue blazer or a doubleheader crowd of 2,922 could save the Jackrabbits from their fate.
By virtue of a 69-64 loss against Centenary on Saturday night, SDSU finished last in its first season in the 10-team Summit League - as predicted in the preseason poll - and concluded the four-year transition with a mark of 33-84.

"We're better than eight wins," Nagy said, "but unfortunately we found a lot of ways to lose close games this year instead of win them."
This was the Jacks' 10th loss by six points or less, and like all the others they were ahead in the second half. SDSU (8-21, 3-15) led 46-39 with 15 minutes remaining, an advantage that disappeared in just 1 minute, 18 seconds.

                    Re: Senior Night Saturday Night!

Many good points regarding this year, however one that I don't recall being discussed is the progress the team made over the year. At the beginning of the season, many posters thought that the team, with a few breaks, could be a .500 team. Often cited was that as the players gained experience the team would be much improved at the end of the season than at the beginning. I may be forgetting a game, but the two of the top games this year were UNI and Minnesota. Did we play a better game than either of those in the second half of the conference? Maybe, but I can't recall it.

So what do we do as fans? Honest support is all we can do. We have more potential to improve next year than we have had at the end of any season since the transition began. My opinion was that during the transition every decision/action should be viewed as to how it will help the program five/ten/fifteen years in the future. We are at the five year point and quite frankly, I am not sure that the men's bb program is in a position more likely to have continuous success than it was when the transition was announced. That is where I am and hope that next year the potential will be realized.

                      Re: Senior Night Saturday Night!

Well when you look at mid-major teams that make runs in the NCAA tourney, they usually have some common elements. They usually have a senior laden team and they have good guard play. I think these two things can really carry a team through a regular season and makes good teams. The only seniors that we had were post players. Our guards were all young, really young. None of them were redshirted. The point guard positon in probably the most important and is a good barometer for the team. Our point guards consisted of Sargent, Moss and Palarca. All three are true freshmen and I know Nagy wanted to redshirt Moss, but really could not because we were already redshirting McKenzie.

I also think the reasoning for redshirting McKenzie was because next year when we are eligible for the Summit Tourney, McKenzie being a senior should really help us during the regular season.

Next year we will have McKenzie, Moss, Palarca and Sargent as Point Guards. I think they have to redshirt one of the Sophmore guards. With Rader being the only Freshmen next year, I think it will help balance out the classes and we don't need 4 Point Guards next year.

Well sorry this got lengthy. I'm still positive about the current roster and the recruits we have coming in. I know people on this board want to make wholesale changes, but that is really hard to do. You have to play the cards you are dealt, you can't just discard all of the cards and expect the new cards to be better. This is not Poker. Everyone needs to remain patient and realize that we are still two years away from finishing in the upper half of the conference. We will get there, it will take time. This is only our first year in a conference also, it will also take time to adjust the travel and scheduling associated with the conference.

They both do a nice job. My only gripe about JT is his habit of barely mumbling opposing players' names after buckets. I suppose it's sort of an NBA kind of thing to do. I find it not only disrespectful, but it frustrates me because I like to get to know the other players in our league. Otherwise, he's great. And DeBeer does a terrific job. I like his 3-point call.

I'll join in your irritation there. It's a small-time thing to do in an otherwise pretty classy program.

I've never really thought about it. I guess I figured thats how every teams PA guys reacted to opposing teams buckets.

I need to get to some road games I guess.

Brad DeBeer is a great announcer and as a great voice... I love his technique... its nice to mix it up every now and again but I wouldn't mind having him around all the time...JT seems to try to hard and his voice gets a little wacky sometimes ha
