    Re: Shooters

I would say in the last 10 years and maybe ever our best pure shooter was Austin Hanson who is #3 on the all time scoring list. He wasn't overly quick and was indeed not a slasher , but he could shoot the rock with precision accuracy which created inside opportunities for his teammates.

Awesome. I was lucky enough to see his last game as a Rabbit -- a loss in the regional semi finals in Kearney. We were so short handed due to injury, but he dang near led us to a win over a really solid UNK team. He could shoot, but he could lead too.

I hate to open this bag of worms, but does anyone else think our friend Louis Krogman falls into this category. If there is one thing he can do, from my observation, it is shoot/score.

First of all, I think when fans reference a "pure shooter", they mean a player with great fundamentals in outside shooting, who generally shoots a high percentage of shots. There are players with that ability, who have a quicker release than others and thus a higher likelihood of getting shots off under tough defensive pressure (then, of course, there are spot shooters, shooters who hit better off the dribble, etc.) If you agree on that basic philosophy then we can talk more objectively about the subject.

Even though I haven't seen him play, Louis Krogman is a prolific high school scorer, who probably is a "pure shooter". When SDSU recruited Andy Kleinjan, he was considered by many including the coaches as a "pure shooter" in high school. Injuries and maybe other factors never brought that out in his college career to a great extent. Whether Krogman will develop at the college level fully is something none of us can predict.

I'm in agreement with bballfan54 that while "pure shooters" are certainly good to have on a team, if they don't develop a complete game (including defense), they might not be as valuable to the team as they could be otherwise.

The "best pure shooter" that I have ever personally seen play for us was Tom McDonald of Chisholm, MN, who led the nation (all NCAA and NAIA divisions) in free throw shooting his senior year (as I recall 94+ percent), who would have been a terrific 3-point shooter if they had the three-point line at that time. Along with Mark Tetzlaff, he led us to the National Championship finals in 1985.

Having said that, I also believe the "best pure shooter" I ever saw in South Dakota was Eric Kline, who played for Augustana, transferred to Northern, and in a regional final held at Frost lit up the arena and basically beat us singlehanded. That was the greatest shooting display I have ever seen in 37 years of watching SDSU basketball.

            Re: Shooters

Ok, time for me to hop in this thread - especially since it's like three or four threads in one!

            1) The reason a perimeter player almost always goes off on us is Coach's defensive philosiphy (which is also his offensive philosphy and is closely related to why we don't get as many pure shooters!). He defends from the inside out and play percentages. Nagy takes his chances that outside shots fall less than ones from the paint and defends accordingly. Consequently, good outside shooters get better looks against us than they do against other teams and take advantage. Personally, I'm ok with this strategy b/c it's sound in theory and furthermore, Nagy's record (when he has players! And that's true for every coach who's ever coached in any sport in any era -- better players = more wins!) proves it works!

            2) "Pure shooters" are generally considered poor defenders b/c they are generally less athletic. The reason they are great shooters is hours and hours of practice and the necessity of having to learn how to score without getting to the basket. Obviously there are exceptions, but this is one of those "I before E, except after C" things!

            3) The best shooters in SDSU history that I remember are 1) Tommy McDonald 2) Austin Hanson 3) Randy Suarez 4) Brian Norberg Sempsrott was a very good shooter but he was a flat out scorer! He would hurt you if you left him open, but he killed you if you let him get in the lane! In my book, it's a tie between him and Chris White for the best perimeter scorers in SDSU's recent history (last 30 years)

            4) While Eric Kline is one the best players in South Dakota's history and maybe the state's best shooter ever (yes, I said ever!) and while his performance was unbelievable.......The BEST shooting performance at Frost ever is Ryan Miller's in the only regional final NSU ever won! Miller did beat us all by himself while scoring 45 and we were all over him in the second half -- didn't matter and to late by then, he was simply unconscious! Best individual performance I have ever (and probably ever will) witness!

Good thread and good conversation! Keep up the good work fellas!

Ron Wiblemo and Steve Brown also come to mind as good shooters.

My bad BBB, I was struggling to remember Ryan's name, and finally settled on Eric Kline (who was good too) as the guy that beat us in the regional. It was a performance for the ages! Thanks for setting that straight.

The Australian kid that played for Metro did the same thing to us the next year. His name escapes me though.

Can't forget Luke Kendall. Former Metro Coach Mike Dunlap is now an assistant with the Denver Nuggets.

Going back, back, back, Steve Brown was one of the best high school shooters in state history in the 1970s and he went on, to the surprise of some because he was only 5-9 or 5-10, to be a great shooter at SDSU long before there was a 3 point line. Chris White was a great shooter and all round scorer for the Jacks in the early 1990s. Louie Krogman, a slower version of Chris White, probably will be a great shooter for USD. For the current Jacks, Clint Sargent and Garrett Callahan seem to have a lot of shooting potential, judging from their occasional flashes of brilliance and Coach Nagy's comments about them.

I've been trying to forget about Kendall, without success, for years.

The Kendall kid from Metro was a role player for that team and had a previous season high point total of 11 coming into that game. He just went off and we were unlucky enough to be the other team on the court that night. Metro had plenty of weapons, Luke Kendall was not a player the coaches lost a lot of sleep over. As I recall, he didn't do much after that either.

Steve Brown was a great shooter! He was the student teacher for my PE Class in grade school. He was pretty cool.
