my personal feeling is that the reluctance to put SDSU games on TV is a mistake . . . but it is also understandable. I don't have access to the financial and the marketing information that would educate an informed decision.

So, I therefore continue to hold my uneducated gut feeling, while also trusting that the Athletic Dept. knows what they're doing.

How's that for having it both ways?

I plan on being in attendance for the home NDSU games in Feb. so I could care less if they are on TV.

So KSFY would pay SDSU for rights to televise....correct?

No. Typically, you pay them and "sponsor" the broadcast. Live television is very expensive.

I stand corrected. I still think there are more positives that come out of televising a game. You may loose a few fair weather fans, but you will reach casual sports fans that had never dreamed of attending an SDSU sporting event and that fan might just realize the level of basketball being played and decide to start attending some games. Thus increasing attendance.

Chrissakes!!! I can't believe I'm this frustrated about this topic. This is my last post regarding this matter. I apologize for continuing on, but it's really bothering me.

Who's in charge of marketing? I thought they created an assistant AD position who was primary responsiblity would be marketing. We need to get this stuff out to the common people. We need to get the Stig, Nagy, and AJ's shows on local television. Along with a FB game or two and a few basketball games. I think we can find the sponsorship to break even.

You don't need to market to fans on this board. We're diehard. We seek out the information. We need to find a way to get to the fans sitting on their arsses at home. UND and NDSU have coaches shows airing on Fargo TV stations. USD, NDSU, and UND get televised games occasionally. We need to market this product. You have to spend money to make money.

I apologize for the incoherent rambling. As you probably can tell, I'm not that well spoken of an individual.

With all that being said. Who's the right person in the Athletic department to contact regarding marketing? I have some ideas.

Or that fan might not. That's the problem here. You pay for the broadcast. Then you "pay" by having fewer paying customers. And in return you "might" generate some interest by somebody somewhere that "might" result in a ticket sale.

Lots of uncertainty there. It's definitely arguable whether the microscopic ratings you'd get (say, compared to other local broadcasts like KELOLAND News that have a broader appeal) would actually have any impact. And no doubt a majority of the viewing audience would be people who are already Jackrabbit fans. I've got 200+ channels. This isn't 1975 when a game on KELO was guaranteed a huge audience. Casual fans will flip past and go watch their Scrubs reruns instead. In television, you no longer have a captive audience.

My take: We're not yet in a position where we can take those risks. We aren't even drawing from Brookings (or even from SDSU) like we should. Let's focus on getting those people in the seats first, then turn to a broader audience.

Micah Grenz is the Assistant AD for Marketing and Promotions. They're still trying to find somebody to hire as Associate AD for External Relations who would work on larger issues of marketing and PR, but those searches keep falling through.

Micah is working on a cable TV deal for the coaches shows. I think it's unfair to suggest that nobody's doing anything based on what you see on this board. Micah is a pretty valuable person in the Athletic Department and he "gets it" as well as anybody on the campus... better than most.

A restricted budget is one thing, but also his plate is very full right now. He's taken on most of the responsibilities and projects that Nancy Neiber used to handle. Since we haven't hired anyone to replace Nancy yet, Micah has been extremely busy. He's someone that if you run into him at a BB game give him a pat on the back and say "keep up the hard work, you do a great job."

Rabbit has the correct attitude. Be at the game and support the Jacks wether they are on TV or not! Patience my Jackrabbit friends with this issue of broadcasting Jacks games on TV. They are working towards it but its not as simple as it may seem. When the time is right - it will happen. Broadcasting a game on TV may not always prove to be a positive. I suspect if you ask the Yotes, whot got embarrassed by UNO in football and most recently dumped by Auggie in MBB you may get other opinions. 5,500 + at the arena? If the Jacks would have been playing either team the placed would have been packed to the rafters on TV or not. In my humble opinion the efforts by USD and Auggie to broadcast events is simply an effort to keep pace with the Jackrabbit success. Yes, success! Other than MBB our programs have exceeded anyones expectations during this difficult transition. WBB, VB, FB, Baseball and I could go on.

1st you talk about "fewer paying customers" and then you talk about "we aren't even drawing in Brookings". What do you have to lose by letting it get out there if fans aren't showing up already? You could gain a few fans that aren't showing up already. I think the football game would bring in a few more casual fans. Will this game be as good as that was? Probably not but it couldn't hurt.

Money. Costs money to put a game on television. Less money coming in. More money going out. That's what you have to lose.
