Another bad attendance figure: 1307. I don't remember any crowds like that forty years ago in the Barn when the enrollment was 4000. If we're D1, encourage the students to attend games.

It wasn't like that in '50s either, GJ, but things have changed a lot since then. We didn't have a whole lot more to do. Very little television, certainly not 24-hour sports on cable, tv, etc. No XBoxes, no cell phones, no lots of things. It is a different world now. But I'm not sure our attendance (pre-conference) is a whole lot worse than it was in the '90s--nobody started going until the conference started after Christmas. It didn't help that it is finals week, and students were streaming out of town (those who had finished) and others getting ready to go, with most finals done tomorrow or Thursday. But it is a shame that we can't get more than 150 (my estimate) students at the game. There were plenty of seats in the reserved section empty also.

Jack #1, I second your analysis of then and now. I am trying to think which side of the Barn was the student section, I believe it was the north since the court ran east and west and often it was filled, but I agree its such a different world now. I did not see many students Saturday night dressed up in business suits, white shirts and ties. Plus I dont think there was a big dance at the Union like there was in the 50-60 era, and yep there was not as much to do back then.

I think with the change in liquoir licenses in the mid 1960, things started to change and the bars became more apealing to both men and women. The 3.2 places were not clean and very few coeds would frequent those places.

Pay television was something talked about back then, but did not exist. I heard once of in Wyoming, they had this thing called cable tv since the reception from antenneas was blocked out by mountains.

I think the HPER staff should study and try to work with the academic adminstrations and try to find ways to compete with all the distractions that keep students away from games. You know I dont think I would want to be 19 or 20 again. I am glad I am where I am.

I think too there were some high school games that might have kept some of the hard core reserved seat fans away from Frost. Anyone who did not show missed a good game.

Something to consider. While student enrollment has nearly doubled since the 80's there is only 1 new dorm within walking distance of Frost.

Look at the dates the guys have had though.... i'm not trying to come up with excuses but the dates they have had....
Montana-Night of the NDSU football game
UNI- Thanksgiving break
tonight- finals week

Also the fact that a majority of them are underclassmen doesn't help any with marketing or to develop a fan base.... Kai and Garret should help with that next year....

Was a good game tonight. Kind of slow and boring at times but overall a good game. Kai, Ben and Dale came to play tonight, the rest of the time was kinda quiet and dull during the game. There were a few scoring droughts during the game. Wondering why Mo didn't play in the second half, as there were times we could have used him. 10 days or so until our next game in California, we need to get some rest and come back strong after Christmas. Would love to see Ben, Garrett, Kai, and Clint all get double figures next weekend in Cali. Would love to be 7-6 coming back to Frost in January.

Was great to get President Chicoine to join us in the front row with a little coaxing. sdsurulz, our girlfriends and I had a good conversation with him and he wishes we could get more students at the games. I like him, I like him alot. Was great to see him fired up in the second half. We're one game under .500 before Christmas Break, it's been a while since we were .500 this late in a season.

I'm a student here. I'm usually at the games but to put it simply.... its finals week! The game I went to last saturday was boring because of all the fouls and I did not feel like attending a game when I have 2 finals today. Until we start playing consistenly good and fun basketball at home student attendance is not going to change. Especially when it is over finals week.

Yes they are, BUT, if I lived in Hansen Berg or Bailey I would think twice about walking across campus on a cold night to see a Basketball game. Especially one where your team had a 70% chance of getting beaten.

Some more game thoughts:
At the end of the game it was great when most of the student section was standing and getting involved, except for the section with the women's basketball team behind the bench in it...It was sad to see them not standing during the school song during some time outs.
The student's might not have showed up but the rest of the crowd did. Students are stubborn anyways. Even if we were undefeated or had one lost there would still have been an empty student section. I hate to say it but don't harp on the student's that don't know there is a game, harp on the marketing people who don't get the word out that there is a game.
It was shockingly amazing to see us shoot 50% from 3 point range, not sure when the last time we did that in a game. And we keep hitting the glass hard.
Maybe stringing together a win streak is what the team, the campus, and the city of Brookings needs to get enthused about this men's team. We will see how it plays out next week.

I for one am not harping on the students. As I said again and again, the world and even the SDSU campus has changed so much in the last 50 to 60 years, it hard to compare anything. I agree though that marketing is very culpable here as well as the students. Not all of the students have interest in athletic events and that faction goes back to day one of SDSU. I do think there is enough blame to go around, its a matter of being part of the solution. I can't blame people staying away because of finals. That transcript is very permanent so you would want to make it put on its best face, even if it means missing a basketball game.

I was at the game. Kai had a good game offensively 5 for 5 first five three point attempts. He got his share of the boards, but I dont know if he got 10. Dale Moss lite up Frost with his rebounds, blocked shots and key buckets. For a true freshman he is a very good athlete. Ben Beran continues to have problems with fouls. We still are having those terrible turnovers just when the fans are expecting some spectular offensively.

Key person of interest to me was the U Denver coach Joe Scott. A very emotional guy. I think early in the game he recognized the patterns that we run and I suspect some of these patterns are built to give Kai a big three. One or more of his guys were not staying with Kai and did Coach Scott let his guys know it. Finally, toward the end Kai pulled down a board and maybe from the coaches angle, it appeared to be a goal tend and he went completely ballistic and threw his nice dress jacket into the stands. Unfortuately, the ref saw that and his emotional outrage and called a technical. Garrett iced the free throws that by and large won the game since there was only seconds left. I got a feeling this coach will be seeing Kai in his dreams for a week or so, and then maybe some one else will have gotten his goat.

I am proud of our guys. The younger guys are getting better and if we can sweep the California trip, we will face Oakland with a winning record of 8-6 on Jan 3.

Defensively, we are improving a great deal. A key to stopping Denver was to deny the lay ups and that they did most of the time.

I got it wrong on who blocked the shot. It was not Kai, but rather Dale Moss who blocked the controversial shot that cause Coach Scott to come unglued.

Its going to take a while before they get back to the NCC days.... The NCC conference helped a lot with attendance.... You had teams that not only did you know them you knew players from them, most of the athletes were local also the fact that the teams they were playing against were regional and gas was $2 less and most games were mens/womens double headers..... I think it will be a while before SDSU gets to the old NCC days but I think it will come..... The NCC had 7 teams on I-29 at one time (UND, NDSU, SDSU, Augie, USD, Morningside, and UNO) then there was UNC and St. Cloud State plus a few others I don't know off the top of my head but my point is its going to take a while to get those names switched with the Oral Roberts, Centenary and the Purdue schools..... it will come but I think it will take a while.... The team is beginning to do there job of winning now they just need to get some recognition.....

Question... Can you block a shot off the back board, or is that a goal tend? Looking at the replay of Moss last night he blocked the shot on the way up (which is ok), but the ball bounced off the back board. Don't really know the rule on that one.

If it hit the backboard first then it's a goaltend. But if he blocked it then it hit the backboard..it's a good block.
