    Wisconsin-Green Bay tops SDSU
    Men 'let one slip away'

BROOKINGS - To put it simply, the South Dakota State men lost Saturday night. But it was much more complex than that.

Hot off their most lopsided victory against an established NCAA Division I program and seeking the first three-game win streak in their own brief Division I history, the Jackrabbits didn't perform well enough to beat Wisconsin-Green Bay. But they played too well - and against a club that clubbed them last season - to be devastated about an 88-81 defeat before a crowd of 1,434 at Frost Arena.

"Everybody knows we let one slip away," coach Scott Nagy said. "I think the people that are playing us understand that we're not bums anymore and we have people they have to prepare for."

Offensively, SDSU (3-3) was dynamic, shooting 53 percent from the floor with nine 3-pointers, dishing out 21 assists on 29 field goals and committing a season-low eight turnovers. All against a Horizon League team that has twice held an opponent to 50 points or less.

Sometimes, discussion board logic eludes me.

Let me clarify my previous post so that no one can take offense: NOBODY could handle Fletcher last night. He singlehandedly overcame our team's efforts to get even one desperately needed defensive stop down the stretch.

Can anyone find fault with that statement? Is that accurate?

Ben Beran seems to agree: "We let him get going, and obviously we didn't stop him."

It wasn't poor defense from Callahan that let Fletcher score the points. I would say it was bad switching from the Jacks on the picks. Fletcher just played the pick very good. Shoot the three when defender left him to get back to his player or drive for a lay-up. This guy was shooting lights out. I don't want to take that away from him.
Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!--Bluto--

What did I say? Did I say "Callahan played poor defense"? No. I said Callahan couldn't handle Fletcher. Could anyone? I just watched the game again yesterday as I put together YouTube highlights. Fletcher scored in a variety of ways. Yes, he worked off of screens for many of his looks. He also drifted away from his defender a few times and hit threes from the corners on skip passes. He also beat his defender off the dribble three or four times. Everything he threw up at the basket (with two exceptions) went in.

In his coach's show that we shot Monday, Coach Nagy was critical of his team's defense on Fletcher. He said he thinks they should have tried some other players on him and focused more on denying him the ball. In essense, he said we didn't handle him. Does he need correcting, too? Well, I'm going with his explanation since Coach Nagy has forgotten more about basketball since Saturday than any of us will ever know.
        Holy nutmeg!
