It is nice to hear us called a worthy opponent again. I feel as the year progresses, we will get stronger and more physical. You can see their confidence growing each game. It is also a good sign to see that they are disappointed in a loss like last night when last year they were pleased to have just been in the game.

I couldn't make it due to the weather, but watched on the Summitt TV. They look like they are playing harder each game and the confidence is showing. They just had to learn how to win again.

Bub94's comments are accurate. Callahan was doing fine...Fletcher just had a great game.

So it is inaccurate to say Callahan couldn't handle Fletcher. But it is more accurate to say Fletcher just had a great game. If I understand correctly, then: Callahan did fine and "handled" Fletcher, but Fletcher just had a great game.

Sometimes, discussion board logic eludes me.

Let me clarify my previous post so that no one can take offense: NOBODY could handle Fletcher last night. He singlehandedly overcame our team's efforts to get even one desperately needed defensive stop down the stretch.

Can anyone find fault with that statement? Is that accurate?

I don't know if Callahan really couldn't handle Fletcher. I think they run their picks better. If you watched Fletcher, he would leave no room around his pick for our defender to squeeze through. Our defender would have to run behind their pick and that little room was all he needed. The one thing I didn't like was how Fletcher was using his off hand/arm and freeing space in front of the ref and he didn't get called for one foul. I also couldn't believe how #23 (I think his name was Berry but I didn't get a program this game) didn't get called for one moving screen. I just think the refs this year are so unpredictable. I've seen so many light touches called fouls and then people get knocked on their ash (misspelled on purpose) and nothing is called. I still think the Jacks played as a team tonight (21 assist is proof of unselfish play).

As I said in prior post, I only had a radio signal to judge the progress of the game. Steve Emming while we were an NCC member was very careful about comments relating to refs because the NCC had a rule prohibiting that kind of behaviour. After we left the NCC Steve kind of lighten up and has often questioned the calls on the air, but maybe still somewhat reserved. I dont recall Steve mentioning the moving picks or the excessive hand checking, but that does not mean it was not happening. Its kind of Steve choice in describing the game.

I think Bub94 knows much more than I do about moving picks and hand checking. I could not at this moment tell you exactly what a moving pick is other than shoving the defender out of the way without stationary feet movement, thus its a moving pick I suppose.

I think the young Jacks are still very vulnerable in many areas. I am not a coach or a ref, but I appreciate everyone's take on the game.

I think we all see everything a little differently and heck we have different intreptations of the same action and the same game. Some of these may not be to logical to others. Fletch got his 29 and yup we apparently did not stop him. Officating like everything else can always be better. I think we could increase the officating crew to five people and still calls will be missed or not agreed upon. We hire refs to make judgements in intrepetating the rules and that what they did last night good or bad.

I didn't think anyone was taking issue with your post, JimmyJack. As you've pointed out, it's doubtful anyone could have handled Fletcher last night. There were some shots he made that were simply unbelievable, outstanding, super-lucky...I don't know which adjective to use but sometimes you run into a guy who just has one of those nights.

There were times we could have locked Fletcher in a closet in the basement of the Briggs Library, turn out the lights, and he'd still make a shot.

Fletcher's effort was the second best effort I can remember behind Miller from NSU. He just simply had it all going last night. His quickness made him a very tough matchup. Nagy talked about letting him get going but I wasn't as dissappointed in the defensive effort against Fletcher as he was.

I thought we gave up too many easy buckets which allowed them to shoot 58%. That was the game really. We were down four in rebounds. Every other category the Jacks domiated. Only eight SDSU tournovers. Huge edge in assists.

Remember a few games ago when we were averaging 20+ turnovers? These guys are improving and fast! Nagy's teams have always been known for defensive intensity and I have no doubt that they will turn the corner on that as well. When they do, games like this become wins and SDSU becomes a team that NOBODY WANTS TO PLAY AGAIN!

Nagy said this is probably the best team we play this year. The Jacks gave UWGB all they could handle!

Minnesota will be pretty good, just by virtue of having Tubby Smith as coach (and getting Big-10-caliber athletes). They'll probably be THE best team we see all year.

Oakland and IUPUI are probably the teams to beat in the Summit League. Saying that, I expect we'll get most league team's best shot (i.e. greeting the newbies into the league).

I agree that Minnesota has to be right up there but if Nagy said UWGB might be the best then that works for me! Point being we are competing against these teams where last year we were getting drilled!

There is no doubt that both NDSU and SDSU will get everyones best shot in the conference. It's just great to have the excitement of conference play returning to SDSU!
My guess is that we will finish middle of the pack but certainly not at the bottom like the coaches presicted!

These are almost identical parallels and had forgotten about that one. Both of these guys were averaging about 10 points per game and just went off in Frost Arena.

With respect to the refs, in my opinion the refs were a non-factor--evenly called the game.

Just to be clear, I wasn't necessarily calling out the refs for any bad calls on us, it just seems that they are calling tick tacky fouls on either team in every game I've been to thusfar, I agree, the calls were even, but tick tacky both ways.

The offense really slowed down with out Kai in it..... It was better tonight then the past but it still slowed down when he was out..... I only watched some of it but the guy for them that went off really went off it wasn't so much bad defense as just being hot the guy was pulling up hitting threes driving the lane and throwing up shots that were falling...... The team is a lot better then they have been in the past I watched the game against UWGB last year and it was embarresing this year the team shows that they want to win..... I think Palarca needs to play more the offense flows better with him he still needs to learn like all fast PG when to run and when to slow it down but with him in it seems to flow a lot better.

It's going to slow down without Kai in it any time. He's our most gifted offense of player and one of the few that can create his own shot.

You can't let a player "get hot". You need to shut him down before that happens. They didn't get it done.

I'm assuming Palarca didn't play much in the 2nd half because of his defense. He killed us in the first half. I like his game though. Just needs to be smarter.

Fun game to watch and I enjoyed it. Looking forward for the rest of the year.

I'm always amazed at Kai's efficiency. It seems like he scores almost whenever he wants because he doesn't take bad shots. When he shoots, it's an open look, and most go in.
