They beat NDSU pretty easily. Also beat Oakland who has a solid program. Nagy is going to use these two wins and the momentum to really fire our guys up. You wanna see a level of basketball not often seen in South Dakota you better be in Frost arena Saturday night. I can't wait.

UW-Green Bay could be the team to beat in the Horizon league this year. They have very good guard play and shoot like crazy from the perimeter (not exactly what we need to hear). They are going to be the most athletic team we've played so far, in my estimation.

I haven't been giving score predictions in basketball yet this year...I was pretty accurate during football so I'm predicting the following:

At the half, UW-Green Bay 31, SDSU 28.

Start of the second half, SDSU has a quick, unanswered 6-0 run to go up 34-31. The crowd goes nuts. GB hits a three to tie and it's a see-saw battle for the next several minutes with the Jackrabbits finally getting ahead and very slowly building up to a six-point final margin of victory: SDSU 67, UW-Green Bay 61.

• Green Bay used a strong run that covered the last eight minutes of the first half and the first four minutes of the second stanza to defeat North Dakota State 85-77 at the Resch Center.
• Green Bay enjoyed a 51-point second half courtesy of 62.5 percent shooting.
• Mike Schachtner finished with a season-high 24 points on 10 of 16 shooting from the field.
• Evans had a stellar all-around night, finishing with 15 points and team highs in rebounds (8), assists (6), steals (3) and blocked shots (2).
• Green Bay made just 1 of its 10 3-point tries, but was 34-for-59 (.576) from inside the arc. In addition, the team committed just five turnovers. The Phoenix played all 12 players in the first half.

• Sounds like the boys in yellow and blue will need to really crank up the defensive intensity to beat the Phoenix.

Weather isn't looking too good at all for Saturday. Area is now in a winter storm watch. Talking snow to freezing rain on Sat. in Sioux Falls and up to 8" of snow in Brookings.

Will have to keep an eye on it, I'd like to go up to the game, but I'm probably not going to travel through freezing rain to do it.

Will have to keep an eye on it, I'd like to go up to the game, but I'm probably not going to travel through freezing rain to do it.

Crap, I got courtside seats and a date with my daughter at Cubby's...hope the weather straightens out. I'm not drivin' 130 miles one way in ice and snow.

Great idea, problem, I've got prior commitments on Saturday. Going to have to be pretty bad for me not to make the trip on Saturday. I'll leave early PM and take it easy if I have to.

Thought I'd put my thoughts after watching the UWM game here on this thread. My thoughts are maybe not exactly relevant now that the game is almost 2 weeks old, but it's a slow Friday.

Guards: Loved how Callahan took over about midway through the second quarter. When Nagy signed him he talked about him being a "winner". That phrase gets overused to almost making it valueless, but in Callahan's case you can see what he's talking about. He took it to UWM and took it to them with repeated drives amongst the trees. It's obvious that he was playing out of position at point last year and plays much better at the 2. Sargent played well at the point, nothing flashy, but he played well. He made mental mistakes often attributed to youth (lazy entry passes to the wing for example) but he has the quickness and handle to play the 1 and doesn't make you "hope" he gets the ball across as many Jacks guards have in the recent years. Moss is really fun to watch. Defensively, he's the best we have (IMO). He has a little "deer in the headlights" look to him every once in a while, but he plays hard and didn't turn the ball over. If his offensive game catches up to his defense, he's going to be really good. He really impressed me. Didn't see enough of Palarca or Cassaday to really get a sense one way or another. I really like our guards. We need to add a shooter to stretch the other team's D, but I hear Cassady or even Sargent may be that guy given the opportunity.

Bigs: Man it's good to see Beran back and with some fire. He was banging hard with the big kid from UWM and both received a verbal warning from the refs early on. There was no backing down in Beran. He was the obvious leader of the team from the minute they stepped onto the floor. Bassett played ok but got tired fast and would stop moving his feet. Cordova rebounded like a champ. I saw him play quite a bit in high school since he played for my uncle. He's come a long way and my uncle said he's only getting better. I believe it. He has the size and desire. Once he gets the feel for the game, he's going to be a menace at the 4. Only problem with our bigs is that once Beran goes out, we see a huge drop in offensive production. He's the only one who can score in the paint. We need Cordova and Bassett to develop a good drop step or baby hook so they're not afterthoughts on the offensive end. Berte coming back should help fill the void created when Beran comes out.

The rest: I've watched Williams play in person a grand total of 3 times. Each game he was very unimpressive. Maybe it's just Milwaukee, because he hasn't had very good games each time he's played here. Gladly, it appears that this years UWM game was a wake-up call for him. He's been playing great the last 2 games. He's our best "off the bus" player and has what looks like the ability to take games over. Granted he was in foul trouble most of the UWM game, but he also coasted alot when he was in there. He should have taken Callahan's cue and started driving hard to the basket. Instead he was content to stay on the perimeter for most of the game. Like I said, since UMW it appears he has decided taking it to the rack is a good thing because he's beginning to drive more and that's what we need from him. He has a nice shot from the arch, but needs to give himself space to shoot from there by taking his guy to the hole and drawing some fouls. If he develops that killer instinct, he's going to be one of the best we've ever had. It looks like he's realized that...which is a good thing. Loney was Loney. Worked hard. Had a couple dumb fouls so he didn't really get into the flow, but worked hard. He will be on one I miss watching when he graduates.

Had a chance to grab a bite with the voice of the Jacks after the game while waiting for a buddy at the team's hotel. Rhetorical question, but does it get any better than Steve? No way.

Finally, the refs were horrible - which is predictible at UWM games. Sat down with aforementioned buddy at the start of the game and noticed a familiar face amongst the officials. I had seen him job many a teams playing against UWM in the past. He works for a family business in Milwaukee when not officiating. Told my buddy that we're not going to get any calls in the game if he's involved. Turns out he ended up being the jag who called Kai for the T for slapping the backboard after the dunk. Can't argue that he didn't slap the backboard, but it was pretty tic-tac. We pull to within 4 and have momentum and he calls the T. Momentum killed and we lose. My boss (big UWM supporter) told me that was the worst call he's seen in a while. I was pretty calm all game, and about lost it on that one. Such is life when you're a visiting team playing a close game with hometown refs. Wasn't the first time and won't be the last.

On a whole, this is the most athletic the Jacks have been...maybe ever. The first thing my boss said to me at half-time: "You're way more athletic than you were last year. They really look good." He played D1 ball in the day and is Bruce Pearl's best friend/agent. He knows basketball. In years past, he wasn't as kind with his description of the Jacks teams. Feels good to be a Jacks fan, doesn't it?

Another reason to go Saturday: There will be some kind of ceremony honoring the SDSU football team. Good chance to thank those seniors again for all they did for the program.
