    Re: 2007 Recruits

Ed Melcher is a long time coach at Braham. Jason Melcher, Ed's son, was a safety for the Jacks during my time. To say that Ed is pro-SDSU is to put it mildly. I'm sure he did what he could to push him our way if that was an option.

I believe Josh Vaughn's (the freshman at NDSU) father is also the basketball coach at Braham.  He probably had some factor in steering him to look at NDSU to compete with his son as well...

        Re: 2007 Recruits

I really hope the Jacks are looking hard at some of the talent in the Twin Cities. Northern Iowa has done very well there in recent years. I would have loved to have seen the jacks get Cameron Rundles an all-state player who signed with Montana. With one DI school and the Gophers in a tail spin there is a lot of good players looking for a home.

No diss to our Jacks, but the guys the Gophers recruit hard would never consider the Jacks. Big Ten basketball is head and shoulders above the Big Sky, Mid-Continent etc. The reality is that NDSU had one lucky game against Wisconsin.

That said I think Noah Dahlman has a lot of upside and if Monson wasn't the moron he is, would be getting a longer look from the U of M. Freddie Coleman (NDSU signee), Matt Cadwell and Ben Woodside didn't get a second look from Monson either and all 3 can play DI ball. I would say as well as some current Gophers.

Vaughn's dad is the coach at Braham but may not be for long, he is unhappy with the admin and is threatening to leave.  Is Nagy looking for an assistant coach with a kid who can play ball?

              Re: 2007 Recruits

I don't think recruits are likely to decline Minnesota to come to SDSU. Minnesota had a bad year, but still won 16 games, and made the NIT this year, and the NCAA last year. If they decide they's rather not play for Minnesota, they probably would pick some other Big-Ten school. But there is a lot of talent in the Twin Cities. Maybe you're not going to get the talent that can make it in the Big-Ten, but you can get the talent just below that level.

Also, let's not forget the importance of scouting, there are players who have talent, but don't catch the attention of the big schools. If you have good scouting, you can find and land these players.

Monson must not be the "only moron" not recruiting Dahlman. Your earlier quote from the Grand Forks papers indicates Noah's final choices are between NDSU, Furman and Army.  I may be wrong, but the NDSU Bison, Furman Paladins and Army Black Knights aren't elite D1 basketball programs in the country.

I know, I was taking a cheap shot at Monson. I've been known to do that especially when it comes to Gopher men's sports teams and their coaches.

To say or think that we can compete with Big Ten schools for all recruits is foolish. However, to think that we can't score that one "diamond in the rough" or convince 1 in 25 blue chip kids to give us a shot is also foolish.

The U of Albany coach stated plain and simple that they made the tourney after just 6 years at DI because they got lucky and signed Levi Levine and Jamar Wilson (AP All-American recruited by several Big East schools). He had no idea why they chose Albany 3 years ago but is damn glad they did.

Not saying we should exhaust our recruiting efforts on the top players in all the surrounding states but we ought to at least feel things out. Sometimes you get lucky like Albany.

article from the watertown PO: the Minnesota womens basketball team is losing two key sophomores from this season's team, guard Brittney Davis and forward Lauren Lacey. The school announced that both players were granted releases from their scholarships. Lacey played in 28 games and Davis saw action in 24 games.

Minnesota guard Tucker expected to transferAssociated Press

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota men's basketball team will lose another regular when guard Rico Tucker transfers out of the program.

Tucker is expected to be granted his release from his scholarship, school spokesman Kyle Coughlin confirmed Wednesday. A 6-foot sophomore from San Diego who played in 27 of the Gophers' 31 games, starting twice, Tucker averaged 4.5 points and 14.1 minutes.

With Vince Grier, Moe Hargrow and Adam Boone all seniors, Minnesota will lose four players from the backcourt and a total of five of its top eight -- with senior forward J'son Stamper also departing.

                          Re: 2007 Recruits

News of these departures first broke here in Minnesota late last week. Problems for both BB programs continue but Maturi remains loyal to Monson and Borton just as he has to Mason. Gopher basketball has been unusually profitable (7 million/year) but that is changing rapidly during the Monson era. I have no idea where these kids will be headed but I would welcome at least the 2 gals into the Jackrabbit fold. Tucker has some upside but I have perceived a bit of an attitude problem.

A little off topic, but I played basketball last night against a kid who is visiting Minnesota this weekend. 6'7" with long arms and could shoot from outside and made me feel every day of 30. Freddie Woods from Milw Riverside. I thought of this thread when I was talking to him last night.

From the Yankton paper. USD recruit who happens to be my neighbor here in Rochester. Great kid from a great family. Top 3 choices came down to Winona, Mankato and USD. He told me his best chance to play early would be at USD so he chose the Coyotes.

Key point here, no DI school would even consider him. He is closer to 6-5 and 215 and broke his hand late in the season. He just isn't at the talent level that we could spend a roster spot on him. USD signed 3 other kids from southeastern MN this year and they are in the same boat. In fact, I think Mankato and Winona probably passed on a couple of them and they fell to USD. Another point, they aren't even on the radar screen when recruits are discussed. Not that anyone here needs to hear it, but DI is DI and nothing else is.

BTW, former Jackrabbit Kurt Meister is an assistant at John Marshall where Tyler played. His wife, Angie Meister (Swenson) is the womens head coach. So, we have some connections here in SE MN.

Cain, a 6-8, 230-pound forward from Rochester's John Marshall High School, averaged 17.6 points, 12.7 rebounds and 4.2 blocks per game as a senior. Cain, who was a two-time all-state honorable mention selection, was also both a McDonald's All-American and Minnesota Mr. Basketball nominee in 2006. He holds the school record for most rebounds in a game (24), blocks in a career (188) and blocks in a season (106). All three records surpass the mark set by Longar Longar, a current player at the University of Oklahoma. He is the son of Richard and Laurie Cain and was coached by Eric Plitzuweit.

According to this thread on Bisonville, both SDSU and NDSU have scholarship offers out to Braham's Noah Dahlman. Brother Isaiah has signed with Michigan St, and former teamate Josh Vaughn is a freshman at NDSU. Sounds like he would be a good get, maybe somebody from MN can add more about him.
