Pretty obvious we need help in the frontcourt. No one could predict Matt Jones would have a mysterious illness leaving him unable to play, Ben Beren's dad would be killed in a car crash, and Berte would have charges of sexual assault pressed against him. One of those problems much less all three leave us a bit deplete in the frontcourt. Understandable??

Willard would be a good catch, his best basektball is coming. Peterka could play for them and be a good fit. Both are the kind of player that SDSU needs to keep in state. Down the road, SDSU will need to be in the house of the better players in SD, they have had some problems with that the last few years. Kids like this would be a good remedy for that.

July no vacation for Irish senior

          Dave Reynolds
          SPORTSFriday, July 7, 2006

Peoria attorney Jay Edmonds gave his basketball-playing son, Josh, some recent advice that might cause some 17-year-olds to swallow hard.
"He told me this is the biggest month of my basketball career so far," said Josh, the Notre Dame standout senior guard. "So I'm getting extra sleep and taking my vitamins in the morning."

And in the first test of his most important month, Thursday morning at the Hoosier Shootout, Edmonds passed with flying colors as about 20 college coaches watched intently.

Edmonds' 17 points and heady floor play led his AAU team, the Midwest Storm, to an 84-46 rout of an overmatched Evansville, Ind., outfit. The Storm won its second game Thursday night, 77-53, entering today's action 2-0.

The 6-foot-4 Edmonds, the only central Illinois player among his mostly southern Illinois teammates, is ranked this week as the 25th-best player in the state among 2007 graduates by the recruiting Web site, MidStateHoops.com.

Schools such as Penn State, Purdue, Wyoming, Indiana State, Illinois State, Northern Iowa, South Dakota State and Eastern Kentucky as well as some Ivy League schools have been in contact. No offers have yet been forthcoming.  .  .  .

"My friend (and Storm teammate), Lucas O'Rear, just committed to Northern Iowa," Edmonds said. "I want to take a visit there along with Illinois State, Indiana State, South Dakota State and Wyoming.

"But mostly, I'm keeping an open mind until the end of the month. Then I'll talk with (Notre Dame) coach (Eddie) Mathews and make a short list. I just don't know if I'll have much time (for campus visits). I want to hang out, too."

He certainly won't have much hang-out time the rest of July. After this tournament concludes Sunday, Edmonds and the Storm head to Romeoville for a four-day tournament at Lewis University.

Then it's back to his Irish teammates for the Central Shootout before putting his Storm uniform back on for tournaments at Las Vegas and Kansas City.

"I'm having fun and never get tired from playing," he said. "It's just from being away from home so long. But I guess I'll have to make those adjustments soon with going away to college."  .  .  .

And for a recruit's mom, it doesn't get any busier than July, the month of truth for college basketball programs looking to restock. Most of July is the NCAA-mandated recruiting evaluation period for college coaches.

After beginning the summer helping the Storm win the St. Louis Midwest Showdown and earning the tournament MVP, Edmonds has also sparked the club to the Indiana Spiece tournament championship and a runner-up finish at King of the South in Nashville.

          They've gone 28-4 this summer. Talk about a near-perfect Storm.  .  .  .

"Josh has gotten so much better this year," said his AAU coach, Milan Djordjevich. "A lot of it is confidence. He used to be more of a small forward, but now he's showing people he's a combo guard."

This week and the rest of this month, there will be a lot of people watching.  .  .  . (read more)

The best center is Sam Willard in Pierre. Jacks will not be able to recruit a better one. I understand he has been offered. Lets hope he accepts and stays home in SD.

Sam Willard seems to be the guy in South Dakota. He has not seemed to be catching on with some of the schools in more prominent conferences which is good for SDSU. I do expect the Schooler experience is providing him needed exposure. Brian Qvale a 6'10 Center from Williston is being discussed as a DI Recruit who is on NDSU's radar. Some other names in the region:

                Iowa

                Brent Barz 6'10 Power Forward

                Minnesota

                Cole Aldrich-Kansas committ
Trevor Mbakwe-Offers from most of the Big 10 schools and beyond
                Jon Leur-6'10, Iowa State offer

                Wisconsin

Matt Dorlack 6'11-Offers from Wisconsin Milwaukee and others
                Keaton Nankivil-5 star recruit
                Andrew Zimmerman 6'9-Mid Major offers

                Illinois

Zach House 7'0 offer from Northern Illinois-total project

I think we are okay for now with Mark Engen and Bob Bilitz. I did see Bilitz play in High School and he was not asked to be a back to the basket center. It will be interesting to see how those two develop and fill out. We will continue to find it difficult to get a player at any position especially center who is too refined. Need to continue to find the diamonds in the rough, make an offer early and hope they stay committed to SDSU if we can get them to committ and garner other attention. Hopefully Engen and Bilitz will be provide the depth we need at the center and power forward position. I thought another Twin City athlete Andy Cone really developed from his freshman to senior year.

Montana was really looking hard at Qvale as well at the Mr. Basketball Tournament down at Kearney, I think. Nagy was there all day on Thursday, but I didn't see him any other day. Also am not sure if he had his eye on anyone in particular.

Word on the street is that 2006 signee Garrett Callahan has a brother named Griffan. Not only have I heard this kid is a stud but, NDSU has called him. Where are we on this kid? He is also getting recruited by Western Illinois and Illinois State. Would be a shame to lose him seeing his brother is here.

I guess you have seen the other thread regarding this. I suppose we could all speculate that Garrett is here for reasons other than just HIS playing ability. That would be speculation and nothing more. I really doubt that there are too many Illinois prospects not on Nagy's radar.

It appears the Jacks have offered Sioux City Heelan 6'4 wing guard his first and surely not his last DI scholarship.

                        Clint Sargent
                        Sioux City Heelan
                        Position Projection: Wing Guard/Wing Forward
                        IowaPreps.com Projected Star Rating:
                        Previous Ranking: N/A
Offers: Minnesota State, South Dakota, Wayne State, and South Dakota State.
More: Sargent went from zero offers to four offers in a very short period of time.  Among those four school to offer was South Dakota State, which was the first Division I school to extend Sargent a scholarship

Others schools said to be contacting Sargent NDSU, Illinois State,UNI, Creighton and Marquette. Plays for the Martin Brothers AAU team in Iowa.

Another area player you might start hearing more about is St Cloud Apollo's Preston Whitaker who is a 6'2 guard. Known for his open floor ability he was the MVP at a recent tournament in Indiana. Creates lot of steals with his long arms and moves well defensively. St cloud State only school to offer thus far, but SW State, NDSU and UNI also showing interest. Probably a top 10 player in Minnesota from class of 2007.

The Jacks have evidently offered guard John Lamb of Indianola Iowa. His stock has gone through the roof after a solid summer of AAU Ball playing for All Iowa Attack. Other DI schools who have offered include Marshall,Bowling Green,Indiana State, Morehead and the Citadel. His father was in the Military so Citadel is a front runner along with Morehead.
