I just hope Zeke has the same clutch gene in Sioux Falls. Bring on ORU.

Obviously we dont get to watch the guys on the other teams as much as we watch our guys (one more benefit of the wonderful scheduling job) so it makes sense we should be biased!

i feel like Dent has been as good as any post player in the league, but i am gonna guess Conover (ORU) and Nelson (NDSU) get more votes than Dent does for the all conference team, and i guess it wont be a giant surprise if some voters also like Fideler and / or Kamateros better. Again, for me, I am taking Dent over any of them!! but i know i am biased and i also know i have not seen all those guys games

My bad I probably came off a little confrontational. I just see an atmosphere like today and think man I wouldn’t change a thing. I wasn’t around for the 9000 days tho so I probably look at it differently than you!

My son had basketball games today so we didnt make it for it, but it was loud on the radio. Makes me feel old though knowing we these games use to be double in attendance. I wasnt trying to make a claim one way or another. Just how different things are. Football we use to be hsppy 20 years ago to get 10k to a regular game. Now we avg more than that. Basketball use to get 8-9k agame and now its half that.

With so many games being televised, streamed, etc home crowds have finished for many basketball teams. There are probably 12-15 home mens games and an equal number for the women. Compare that to only 6 regular season home football games. Frost pre-renovation held 6,500 and now during renovation 4500(?). The new “frost “ will have seating for 6,500. I have only lived here for 20 years and wonder where they put 10,000? Was the capacity more than the 6,500 I stated?

Sorry I misread your numbers. Where did they put 8,500-9,000?

Frost at one point was all bleachers and you could pack over 9,000 into the arena. The new 2024 facility will have capacity of 5,500 which I believe is too small and should have been 7,000.

when was the last time the men drew 5000 and how often? The woman have dne it during WNIT runs. 5500 should be enough.

It is interesting that in the history of Frost Arena, we only cracked 5,000 for a yearly average once 1997-98. The lifetime yearly average is only 3300. The best in D1 was Nate's senior year and it was 3600. 5,500 is probably a good number. With all of the modern amenities, the only way to get more would be to build a new building. I think the idea is to make it like similar to Gonzaga. They have a 6,000 arena and it is full every night.

Frost was never totally bleachers. the upper level on the north side has always been chairs, but we had bleachers all the way to the floor on the other 3 sides and also above the rail on those 3 sides. We led D2 in home attendance multiple times and were basically always in the top handful. our yearly averages were pulled down by games against naia opponents, but we regularly had crowds of over 5000 for any quality conference opponent

obviously most of the biggest games are vs augie and the u. augie was probably more often good in the 80s and usd and the jacks pretty much dominated the 90s

but i would say i am almost positive we had at least one game with over 6k against all of UND, NDSU, UNC, Morningside, and UNO i dont know why i am less willing to say that about the minnesota schools. they definitely had some good teams during that same time

and Salem to your point about then vs now, the atmosphere at Frost is still AWESOME (to the point i am really REALLY nervous about the decision to make significant changes) but i was at many of those over 7k crowd games. and it was DEFINITELY BETTER

the 1989 augie game with over 9400 the crowd basically never sat and in my old memory almost never stopped cheering one or the other of lets go rabbits, or augie sucks. i am really NOT a fan of negative cheering but for some reason that is a classic that i will miss forever!! and the regional in i believe 97 when we beat Fort Hays, we had about 7500 in both the semifinal and final both crowds were INCREDIBLE and against Ft Hays, my memory says that we chanted lets go rabbits from the time the teams came out for warmups until the final horn

in each of those cases it actually felt like the building was shaking

The Cal State Hayward game in 1985 drew over 9300. Would be the second highest attended game.

5500 seems plenty big for me. I’d much rather have it be hard to get tickets for big games than be mostly empty the other 70% of the time. Sellouts create buzz. 3,000 fans is a rare gate these days, outside of 2-3 games (or the final couple of the WNIT).

Also, sacrificing comfort and good sight lines in favor of more seats is really sketchy. Ask NDSU fans how they like those crammed together seats in their refurbished arena.

Given what we see with reported attendance numbers all over the country, I do have to wonder how they counted those crowds of 9000 back in the day. Accurate or not, nobody had the option of turning on Midco in the man cave instead of going in person.
