It's hardly a defense at all, really. Any team, as has been proven game after game, can get WIDE open 3's every possession. Every single possession. NDSU, a bad shooting team besides Jacobson, made 13 3's tonight. Three off their school record. UNI, Murray State, and Wichita State all broke their school 3 point records.

I'm just at a pure loss. The boys can play as hard as they possibly can on defense, but it doesn't really matter. The zone is not a winning formula. There is a reason only one team in the nation runs full time zone (Syracuse). It doesn't work effectively. I'm just seriously not exaggerating when I say that literally EVERY possession, NDSU could've/did get a wide open look. The zone is 90% dependent on how the other team is shooting.

In regards to the bad display of man-to-man defense to start the season, that can actually be corrected. There are things to fix and ways to improve man-to-man. If Otz doesn't think he can get them to play better man D than they were, then he either, 1) Is doubting his players' athleticism or 2) Doesn't think he can coach them up effectively, which is quite concerning.

And yes, the offense went into a huge lull in the second half. But they shouldn't have to be perfect every game to make up for a horrific defense. The offense flows WAY better than the beginning of the year, and they are absolutely talented enough on offense to win the Summit League.

Finally, I'd love to stand behind Otz (I really do like the offense right now and think he's a good guy) and believe in them like he asked the fans to do in the postgame. But I'm really struggling to do that when a very, very obvious deficiency is not being corrected. Especially when GA tickets are $25 freakin dollars (Crazy, stupid expensive). Not playing even a little bit of man-to-man defense is asinine. Especially when UNI has made 473 threes against you in one game. Also, Tevin was shadowing Jacobson to start the game and I don't think they did that at all in the second half. Weird.

    Rant over.
Excellent post. Our defense is pathetic. There is nothing else to say. Running zone at a team for a change of pace is one thing. Playing it all the time is a joke. A complete joke.

Wide open shots all game, every game. That seems to be our defensive philosophy. What an embarrassment.

You can't go scoreless for 5 min and score 7 or whatever it was the next 5 min and expect to win regardless of the defense.

If telly and Hess make half the 3 they missed we probably would've won the game.
There are always nights when the offense isn't making shots. That is true for all teams. The difference maker on those nights is whether you can get stops. Defense is the constant, not offense.

Our defense is ugly. I'll give it time before I start to get too worked up about it. My rant about last night is that we continued to sit in a zone with about 1 minute left in the game as we "try" to intentionally foul. All we did was chase around their passes until it eventually led to a 3 on 1 to the hoop. This was in a half court set!!! We are so bad at man to man defense that we are incapable of playing it as we try to intentionally foul?

We have a BINGO! Imo, it's not fun to watch a game just hoping the other team misses wide open 3's in order to win. Just doesn't seem like basketball to me...

At this point it is what it is as zone seems like it will be used rest of the year. Let's hope we beat usd this weekend and get some momentum going for rest of the yer.

The Waconia girls coach has some interesting opinions on the subject matter at hand if anyone is so inclined to check him out on twitter (@CoachCPierson).

We are 16 games into a 31 game schedule. I wouldn't consider that the beginning. We haven't shown any signs of improvement on the defensive end.

I'd trade where NDSU is with where we are. We've gotta be almost perfect on the offensive end to win.

Carl grew up in Mitchell and i know him well. He is an intelligent sports and coaching minded guy. Although im not sure i agree with his tweet that Coach Otz should never had been hired. If thing keep going the way it is now, by the end of the season i will probably agree with Carl.

So who is he insinuating should have gotten the job?

I'll say this. TJ better learn how to "teach" man defense or he won't be a head coach at SDSU for long. I just don't believe a zone defense is a good base defense. There is a reason literally almost zero teams play zone 100% of the time.

Beginning to agree with Pierson. I've been to two games this year, including last nights debacle, and we seem lost out there. I hope I'm wrong, but I'm starting to get the feeling USD is about to take us to the woodshed.

OK. I would like someone to give me a tutorial on the advantage of the 1-3-1 zone and/or 3-2 zone.......which could also include the disadvantages(other than wide open shots). In an earlier thread, it was discussed how it would protect a player like Mike Daum from getting into foul trouble. That has been successful since Mike has not been fouled out while playing the zone defense. I am still observing the process, but on days like this some extra counseling is required. Thank you.
