Nothing better than "motorboating" the Gophers!

Agree with earlier post, not the end off the world, but concerning because of next game at FGCU, don't want to see a losing streak get started and team get into a funk.

This will make FGCU game an important one. They have losses to Ohio, Bowling Green, Florida and Texas A&M so hard to judge the next opponent in the early season.

Re: GDT: SDSU vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders

I'm not usually one to come on here and bash coaches after a loss, but I couldn't help but notice a few things last night that were on Nagy that could have contributed to the loss.

          1. Where was Daum in the 2nd half? Theisen once against started the 2nd half (god knows why, I think Daum should be starting, it might light a fire under Theisen's ass... he needs it). Anyway, Daum came in pretty early, then got yanked about a minute later and didn't see the court until late in the game. I feel like he's a big part of our offensive success, being able to stretch the interior defense, and crash the offensive boards. I don't know if he did something to get put in Nagy's dog house... if so, that is a problem that I have with Nagy, as he is very stubborn and it seems will take a loss just to teach a lesson. Imo, there are other ways to teach a lesson.

          2. Bittle gets confidence and usually starts to roll after posting up on a smaller player. I noticed they tried to do it the first play of the game, weren't able to get it to him, and they never went back to it. I think Bittle is a great post up guard, and they need to incorporate that more, especially when he's struggling to score. I put that on Nagy for abandoning it so quickly.

          3. Obviously we miss Marshall, but what Marshall does really well is penetrate and dish. Both Parks and King have that ability, and they didn't utilize it much. I think that's exactly what we needed, because every time we would drive, they would crash and usually get a block. I put that on the coaching staff to direct our players to do that more often rather than just driving into a crowd and getting a layup blocked. There were more layups blocked in this game than I think I have ever seen in a college game.

          4. I am all for putting in Devine when he can match up with the other team's post and cause some disturbance in the middle. This was not one of those matchups. Their big guy was thick and much stronger than Devine, and frankly just pushed him around with ease. Devine adds little to nothing on the offensive side of the ball, which is where we clearly struggled in the 2nd half, so why even have Devine in there?

Overall, a very frustrating game as I felt like we should have won it, and I feel like there were some tactical coaching errors. Easy for me to say sitting in my chair.

Obviously, Coach Nagy knows what he is doing, but IMO this is a recurring problem that impacts player development. Some players are allowed to make mistakes and given lots of opportunities. Some players get bench time for a single mistake. Sometimes I feel like players don't improve a lot because they are so worried about making mistakes. With his offensive skillset, Daum could be a FORCE in the Summit League by his Junior season (maybe even next year) if he develops.

We've had a very nice rotation with a deep bench in the non-conference portion of the schedule. In the past, once conference play starts the rotation gets much shorter. I will be interested to see if we can maintain a deeper rotation this year, it seems obvious to me that bench talent is more than capable of helping out.

skip the first 5 minutes of the game then watch the rest of the first half then call it good.

This is a game where if we had Marshall and or Flatten I think things go very differently. Marshall for obvious reasons but flattens athletic ability would have helped. Frankly they had more energy and effort in the 2nd half then we did. If the first half the refs were calling a lot of fouls both ways when driving to the basket, which i think was good for us. In the second half apparently their D was better and stripped the ball or blocked it just about every single time going too the hoop so we didnt get a chance for free throws. didnt help the 3 stopped falling. If we had tech in Frost I feel the game would go similar but in our favor.

Are you coach haters at practice every day?
FWIW, Daum came in, TT inbounded the ball from in front of their bench and lobbed it over his head and his guy got a easy bucket. We came down to the other end and Daum air balled a 3 with over 20 seconds on the shot clock. Back on defense and he didn't move over a help on a layup. I'm guessing those things got him a quick hook.

He wasn't only out less than 2 minutes at the most. When he came back in, we played both him and Theisen at the same time for a bit. He was in the regular rotation after that . Daum played 10 minutes in the second half, Ian -8 and Divine- 4.

My thought on Daum was he looked good on offense but really hustled on D in the first half. But like the rest of the team unless they all had tired legs there was not the same effort in the post D from any of our team.

Re: GDT: SDSU vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders

While I agree Nagy could be tough on a player's confidence in most cases the pulls seem to be expected by the players. I don't recall many games where a player made a mistake and was shocked he got pulled. It's part of playing with Nagy's expectation. On the downside of Nagy is his preference to let a team go on a big run w/o calling a timeout and then calling one after we score. He doesn't have that market cornered by coaches for sure but I find it annoying.

As far as Daum goes on the defensive end, well he's a matador right now. He'll improve with work but absent last night, the rotation seems to be working. Theisen's the better defender (although I agree with the "light the fire comment) who can also stretch the defense so it works this year. I don't think anyone should over react to one game. I look for solid games the next two.

Agreed, and i wasn't picking on Daum. TT has some very physical bigs . I think thats why Nagy rotated all 3 of our bigs

I'll defer to Nagy when it comes to player rotations. I'm guessing there isn't one poster here that even remotely knows what each players assignment is on each play. Screw up a few of those and they pry deserve to be on the bench.

If we want to pinpoint a reason we lost.....look at the turnovers. We had FAR too many turnovers to expect to win that game.

They had 9. They essentially had 11 more possessions than us.

                              Points off TO's: TT - 23 SDSU - 5

That's why we didn't win. Not because Nagy pulled Daum for 2 minutes. Not because we didn't drive and dish. Not because Jake didn't post up so he could get going.

And as Merriam said in the radio broadcast, it wasn't just that the Jacks turned the ball over frequently, it was that TT scored off those turnovers with ruthless efficiency in the 2nd half.
