    Re: 2015-2016 Team

The men's basketball should arrive back in Brookings this week. Summer school begins tomorrow. These young men on the basketball team will begin the work for the season. It will tip off the season in a little over 5 months.

Considering we are a couple of days away from the start of the season, how does everyone feel about this years team? I know the two pre-season games were not an indication of what we'll do but did anyone see the games and your thoughts on the returning players and what they have to do the carry the load?

With 4 quality starters returning, the only real question is what the Jacks get out of the post position and who is going to get minutes there. It will be interesting if the offense runs through the post like it did with Cody or if the offense is more motion and perimeter oriented with the post used more in setting screens and not as much as a scoring option.

I think Duam and Theisen will be just fine. They wont get Cody Larson production in the post out of them and they wont force the opposing teams to double them but they bring other elements that Larson couldn't like their shooting abilities. Not saying they wont be able to score down low, they just wont get the touches like Larson got.

We will find out more after the Weber State game.

Preseason accolades for Bittle, Parks, and Marshall appear to be solid contenders for end of season honors. Bittle shot 5-7 in the last game and his defense and ball handling are sharp. Parks and Marshall did not find the basket as well, but it hard to see where defenses will contain these guys either. Daum and Thiesen are a great 1-2 punch at the post. If we can use the apparent depth of this team, SDSU ought to be difficult to beat. Flatten should be back by conference time or a bit earlier. Severyn and Moffitt are solid backups that make contributions while on the floor whether it is scoring, rebounding, or defense. King and Gentry have much to contribute. King has played more and he could challenge Flatten for time. Dykman may need a year to strengthen like Daum has this past year. The 5 starters are all legitimate scorers and the backups can also put it in the bucket with exception of King at this time. King has not looked for many shots when on the floor. I would expect SDSU to out rebound most teams.

There were games last year where we beat a couple of the better teams in the conference and Larson didn't have the big impressive numbers. Did his inside presence alone play a role in us winning those games or is our perimeter that strong?

I think Larson was so underrated last year. There were times when I would be frustrated with his output, but then I would realize how much effort other teams had to put into keeping the ball away from him. They knew that if they let him get the ball, he would dominate.

Cody was an easy guy to get frustrated with as I was myself a lot of the time. One thing I will say is the kid worked hard! I think we will miss him but more so because of his defensive presence. If you really just watched him he took a beating everygame inside and did many things that won't show up in the box score.

I'm a little concerned about George and his health. Seems his groin has been an issue since last year and as I caught a bit of practice over the past few weeks he doesn't practice a great deal. In the exhibitions, he didn't exactly blow by people with his quickness like he has in the past. More of a jump shooter. Not sure if that's by design or out of necessity given his health.

Let's hope its by dedign for now as he rounds into shape. We need a healthy Marshall if we are to have a great season.

The thing that will help cushion the blow of losing a strong post like Cody is that the Summit isn't exactly loaded with big, strong post players. With Forbes gone, I'm not sure many conference teams are much better down low than we are.

This is not good if indeed true. If his groin is an issue I say rest him as long as possible. Need him to be 100% for the Summit League conference season and most importantly the tournament. Goal remains a top 2 seed and 3 strong tourney games. That's all that matters at this level.

I don't think George's groin will ever be 100% while he is still playing. I've heard his groin issues go all the way back to his Wisconsin days.

I'm glad to hear him report that Reed had a productive off-season in the weight room. It seemed like he was able to be pushed around at times, and if he can develop a more physical presence, watch out. I'm excited to see him play for the next 3 years. I think he could be a very special player when it's all said and done.

Has anyone heard about any redshirt players for this season? I would expect Dykman and Brown to take this year. Gentry is the tough call since he appears capable to contribute early, but the time that Marshall and Moffitt take could limit meaningful minutes for the freshman. Just following Marshall who averaged 34.5 minutes per game during 2014-15 reduces opportunity considerably.
