And I think it needs to come from a player(s). I'm sure many here read the article written by a reporter that was given access to the Jacks locker room during the Summit tournament. The one thing I remember from that article is the half-time rant (with a few expletives included) that Griff delivered in the Western Illinois game. It just doesn't seem like there is anyone on this team that has enough of an edge to provide that. Whether its a senior or someone else, there needs to be a fire lit under this team.

Bingo. I've thought about that same article several times this year. This collection of players lost their edge when Callahan walked away.

That being said, we are in a very similar position to last year. As we all know, at our level essentially the entire season's success/failure comes down to three days in March. As we said earlier in the week, this team has a very high ceiling, but they also have an embarrassing low floor. You don't know what to expect game to game or (even worse) from half to half.

Tonight: 25 points in the first half and 46 in the second half. I think this stat line will be a microcosm of the entire season. Be careful about wagering your money on the 2013 Jacks!

The season essentially comes down to three days in March for any of the Summit teams. Until there is a year where we see some outstanding OOC results, there is an(1) automatic qualifier for the big dance. Our second place team is relegated to the NIT. So the next 13 games are important for seeding in the tourney, but the 3 games in March are THE making of the season going to the big dance.

It is important to finish in the top 2 seeds to get a Saturday game in the tournament. With not having a deep bench, playing 3 games in 3 days is not a good thing.

About everything I want to post would get deleted or get me banned...so I'll stick with this:

Team: S-O-F-T...Pillow Soft. If there is a term softer than pillow soft, that'd describe this team when they get smacked in the mouth.

Coach: Stubborn. There is no rule that says when a guy gets 2 quick fouls that he has to sit the rest of the 1st half...especially if that guy was the only guy that showed up to play early in the game (White). Players are allowed to play with 2 fouls in the 1st half, I've seen it done.
There is no rule that says you can't take a timeout, or two, or three in the 1st half. It is allowed...I've seen it done. Especially when the opposition goes on a 36-12 run.

I'll quit there...it's a long ways till March.

Very true! Also, the team needs to keep improving and playing good ball in order to find one of those seeds. Lets hope that we find the guys to lead this team to play great ball every game every night. We should have most of the rough games out of our system by now.

Looked at the box score and saw Prince didn't play - recurrence of the injury,or was something else going on ? One positive thing in the stats was only 5 turnovers on the Jacks , which must be a season's low.

Agree with everything you say. I just don't know if this team is tough enough to win TSL. They weren't physical enough down low and gave up some easy offensive rebounds. So frustrating watching this team so far this year. You never know which team will show up.

Another thing that irks me is Nagy saying this is just another game. That may be true for us but for them it was their season. We can't come in thinking it's just another game and have no intensity while the coyotes were fired up. I was hoping to see the Jacks as intense as them today but it wasn't even close.

What's wrong with Dykstra? At KC he was lights out. Today he was bad again until making one or two late. He had a WIDE open three down by 2 and missed it. This team is just hard to figure out.

Dont worry. When UND beat us last season they stormed the floor and I believe the coach referred to it as one of their program's biggest wins.

                    USD has a similar thought-process I imagine.

Congratualtions to Nate for passing Tetzlaff in career points. We should have an opportunity to say that thank you again prior to the Oakland game Thursday night. We should have a good turnout for that game. Todays game was the big draw in the Summit league games with over 5000 attending. NDSU had over 5000 for the Jacks as well. We need to get the Jacks ready to win in front of 5000+.

I wonder if the coahces do film comparisons and just ask the team to watch and tell them what the difference when we played new mexico or when we played und and usd? Unless the team and coaches know something we don't know I don't see us getting a top 2 seed in the turny and in turn not winning the tunry playing 3 games in 3 days. I just don't see it. Last year I saw it. They had something speical about them but this year they play like they already accomplished something.

I was at the game. USD deserves credit. They have some solid players (Miles, Bos, Kasperbauer, Gruis) and they played well on the offensive end in the first half. It was almost comical how poorly we shot in the first half. While USD was fired up, the Jacks were extremely passive. There was almost no movement on offense. Even Nate was passive. I'm no basketball expert, but the second half certainly demonstrates that you need to get the ball into the paint, whether by penetrating or by passing to a post at the foul line, in order to attack USD's matchup zone. There was almost none of that happening in the first half. It's not like USD was playing great defense. We just passed it around for 30 seconds and then forced up a shot. It reminded me of UMKC's first half offense in the last game.

A word about the atmosphere: I hadn't been to a basketball game in the Dome before. If anyone doubts that USD needs a basketball arena, they should attend a game at the Dome. It is a horrible basketball facility. Worse than I had imagined... like a high school gym dumped in the center of an airplane hanger. And what about the game production? Childish is the word that comes to mind. The scoreboard was set at USD 199, SDSU 1 before the game. The ushers were wearing "Hate State" shirts. They ran a really stupid "report from Brookings" video on their board (theme: SDSU loves USD because we're trying to be like them... groan). The mascot was running around with a "Hate State" sign. When we were shooting free throws, they flashed images of people holding their noses on the video board. It just felt bush league. Not much has changed, apparently.

That said, it didn't feel like a very intimidating atmosphere at all. There were an awful lot of Jacks fans among the 5,000 allegedly in the seats.

Disappointing loss. Had we shot anything like a normal percentage in the first half (hitting wide open shots, for example) we would have won easily. But that didn't happen and to USD's credit, they played well.
                          Holy nutmeg!

This may be a background to why there are games scheduled by the Summit between rivals over the break. USD officials may need a 101 course for running a game beyond junior high. Rumors that I heard from last year may not have been accurate, but civility that is shown from JimmyJack's post definitely set the stage for many things to be possible when students are unleashed in tandem.

I really think saving timeouts for the second half is over rated. We could have tried to stop the ebb and flow in the first half. Difference maker in my mind.
