    Re: Tennessee State

Congratulations! It's a big milestone for SDSU. According to the Sagarin ratings, Tennessee State was rated #111 in D-I. I hope that SDSU and the Gophers play each other next year.

Jackrabbit Men Get First Division I Victory

NASHVILLE, TN – Senior guard Brady Hokenson scored on a jumper from out front with five seconds left as South Dakota State picked up its first victory against a Division I opponent defeating Tennessee State 82-80 at the Gentry Center Wednesday night.  .  .  .

The Jacks rallied from a 10-point deficit in the final five minutes after Ben Beran and Michael Loney had fouled out. Ironically, neither team shot a free throw in the first half but the two teams combined for 28 free throw attempts in the second half with the Jacks going 13-of-17 hitting their last nine.

SDSU coach Scott Nagy praised his team. “When we were down ten, and had people foul out, it would have been easy to cash it in,” Nagy said. “But they hung in there and really executed well. They competed all the way to the end. I can’t tell you how proud I am of them.”

Nagy, who is in his tenth year at SDSU, is now 212-67

Senior guard Luke Geiver hit six three-point baskets on eight attempts as he scored a career high 26 points. His previous best was 12 at Wisconsin-Milwaukee earlier this year.

With the big guys in foul trouble the guards picked up the slack with Geiver, Hokenson and Andy Kleinjan combining for 49 Points. Hokenson and freshman Steve Holdren each had a double-double, Hokenson with 12 points and 11 assists while Holdren had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Kleinjan, playing in his second game since coming off an injury, scored his first 11 points of the season, all in the first half. He sparked a rally which saw the Jacks lead by seven at 28-21.

Bruce Price, a 6-3 sophomore guard from Minneapolis, hit a three-pointer to end the scoring in the first half, giving Tennessee State a 40-37 lead. Then he opened the second half with another three, pushing the lead to six, and the Jacks had to play catch up the rest of the way.

After trailing 70-60, Hokenson and Joe Green each hit a pair of free throws, then Geiver hit his sixth three and it was 70-67.

The Jacks took a 78-77 lead when Green scored on a rebound, was fouled and hit the free throw with 43 seconds left. Then Geiver added a pair of free throws for a three-point lead, but Kareem Grant hit a three-pointer for the Tigers to tie it with 14 seconds left.

After Hokenson’s basket, Tennessee State had a shot but missed.

Tennessee State, now 5-7 for the season, is picked second in the Ohio Valley Conference this season and suffered its first home loss of the year. TSU came off a road trip on which it played Arkansas and Alabama.

Looks like the SDSU win streak over Tennessee State continues. We are now 2=0. I think this was a real confidence builder. Lets hope the good effort by all the team members continue.

After re-reading the Argus story, besides Geiver having a record high scoring, the one other player among the 4 and 5's who had a much better game was Joe Green. I have always felt Joe was a very good player when his his mind is in the game. Last night I think Joe arrived and played his best.

I saw that to SD State, thats alright with me.

I think the most telling stat was the 3-point percentage of the opponent 12-29, still too high but lower than previous games. I don't like the thought of giving up 40 points a night from beyond the arc.

Huge game for Giever, 26 points - 5 steals. Hokenson with 11 assists and the game winning shot. Kleinjan provides some much needed outside shooting. Who would have thunk it!

Frontcourt not as positive but they will recover. 19 offensive rebounds is impressive. How does Holdren not get to the foul line? I think there was a little home cooking from the officials in the first 30 minutes of the game. Kept their whistles in their pockets when we needed them too, however. Nice win, lets build on this.

Thank God we won that game. Ever since I saw that NAIA team take Tenn. St. to OT, I was really counting on this game to be our first win. I was freaking out with 5 minutes to go. I was starting to think that we might not ever get a D-I win, I couldn't believe they were beating us. Our guys did a good job of fighting back. Hopefully we just needed to remember how to win and now we can start to roll from here. We just needed to get that monkey off our back, hopefully now we can start to play State basketball. This team has not come close to playing their best ball, and that includes last night. Looking foward to some big wins over the Waynes.

Good win for the rabbits. Hopefully the first of about 600 more in the Nagy era. Looking foward to the Burger King Classic. Nice to see the gaurds step up and play really well. Doesn't hurt to have Andy's outside shooting ability back. Should stretch the defenses and open things up more in the middle.

Among the Historically Black Colleges, Tenn St is one of the best and they proved that by playing Alabama and Arkansas of the SEC close, about 10 pts in final scores.

For anyone to imply that Tennessee State is not a quality opponent has no concept of D1 and who exactly has good programs besides the top 25. T-State was tough back in 1956 when they came to the Barn and they still are a good program. Also of note is the home locations of players. One named Price is from the Twin Cities, so they do national recruiting.

Actually Tenn. St. lost to Arkansas by 28 points, so it wasn't that close.  I realize there are good teams outside of the top 25, just because I didn't think Tenn. St. was one of them doesn't mean I don't recognize teams outside the top 25. Maybe they are better than what I thought, well obviously they are because I thought we would win by double digits.  I guess I got too hung up on their OT win over an NAIA team and a five point win over a DIII team in FISK.  I think I saw those scores and thought we would roll those teams and therefore we would roll Tenn. St.  Comparing scores isn't always a good indicator. However, it did give me a good indication that we were going to win, and we did.  I don't care if Tenn. St. is the worst team in D-I, we needed a win and we got it.  Hopefully we can build off of this.

You're almost as bad as the supposed fans that downplayed the SDSU football win at Southern this year. Stating they are a poor team by only talking about 2 games they played is like stating the Dolphins are better than the Patriots because they won on Monday night. Here is Tennessee State's schedule so far:

at Western Kentucky L 73-76 (OT)
                                at Vanderbilt L 65-87
                                at Southern Illinois L 60-83
vs. Cal State-Northridge (Las Vegas) W 75-72 (OT)
vs. Delaware State (Las Vegas) W 75-69
                                TREVECCA W 102-97 (OT)
                                FISK W 81-76
                                at Middle Tennessee L 94-96
                                ALABAMA A&M W 86-67
                                at Arkansas L 68-96
                                at Alabama L 79-87
                                SOUTH DAKOTA STATE L 80-82

Sure Tennessee State has struggled at times this year but they have four wins against DI competition so far. They have also played tight games against some quality teams - Western Kentucky, Middle Tennessee State, & Alabama. Nagy compared them athletically to Wisconsin-Milwaukee. If you want a sleeper for the final four pool - pick Wisconsin-MIlwaukee to win 2 games - they are a good team.
