Re: summit end of year awards

Guess we'll just have to be content with chanting "MVP" while Nate is dribbling the clock out on Tuesday night.

I wonder if White got much love for 6th man of the year? its going to be nice next year. COY nagy, POY Wolters and 2 or 3 guys on first team......

I don't understand. If it's Player of the Year and not MVP, then how does Morrison win it?

        Wolters: 21.2 pts, 6.1 ast, 5 rbs, 1.6 stls / game .. 44.9% FG ... 25% 3P ... 78% FT

        Morrison: 20.3 pts, 1.5 ast, 4.4 rbs, .8 stls / game ... 49.3% FG .. 45.1% 3P ... 83% FT

Morrison does not have better stats to suggest he should be POY .. if anything Hamilton should have got it over Morrison. But, ORU finished first which is why DoMo ended up winning it.

Perhaps it's the Summit League version of a "lovely parting gift" for Oral Roberts. /snark

Ha, ha. Well, I'm not bitter, just looking at the stats and I do not get how Morrison was better than Nate. Oh well, let's just beat them in Sioux Falls and no one will care

Haha. Personally, I was suprised fans thought it would hurt them and they wouldn't get any awards because of that, but I always thought it would help them. ORU is leaving to go to conference that is more regionally based to them. Can't say I blame them either. ORU leaving will hurt the RPI but will make winning the conference easier but they did what was best for their school.

I really don't think ORU leaving will in the long run make it that much easier to win the conference. I expect Oakland, NDSU, SDSU and USD to be in the hunt most years, both men's and women's basketball--that's awfully crowded "at the top" even without the Indiana schools, WIU, UMKC or UNO getting more consistently competitive. This could be a real snake-pit of a league in a couple of years.

I thought Prince deserved to be on the all-newcomer list, however some of his bigger games were in the non-conference and early on, he did seem to see less time and stats later in the season, however I thought there were times when what he added was more than a stat line.

I can't argue with Morrison as POY, but I'd argue with Sutton being coach of the year. I thought Nagy deserved it.

I find it hard to believe Nate did not win this award. I consider it (hyperbole alert) a travesty of epic proportions.

It may be that my disdain for ORU plays a role in my opinion. However, I would take Nate 100 times out of 100 when asked to start a team of the best players in the Summit. Having a point guard that can absolutely dominate a game and rarely, and I mean rarely, ever has an off night is nearly impossible.

I guess I feel the opposite on this.

While Nagy did exceed expectations this year and is deserving of the award, I think Sutton exceeded expectations as well and ended up with an outstanding overall/conference record. Sure Sutton's team was the preseason #1 in the conference, but who thought their overall record would be where it was at, especially after losing their starting point guard Holdman before the season even began.

In terms of POY/MVP, no matter how you slice it, there wasn't a player with better overall stats in the league and their certainly wasn't a player that contributed more to their team's success. I think a quote from Bennett Hayes, an unbiased observer, sums it up best after he witnessed Wolters play against ORU: Wolters’ 24 point, 9 assist, 2 steal line likely doesn’t do his impact enough justice, as he was magnificent. If a stat-line like that doesn't do your play justice, you just might be okay at basketball.

I do want to say that Morrison is deserving of the MVP, I just don't feel he was the most deserving.

I guess the way I see it is, the POY, goes to the best player on the best team, unless another player is hands down better. I think Wolters is better, I just don't think its that much of a difference.

Whereas for Coach of the Year, I feel like there is more too it, I thought Western Illinois and SUU's coaches were deserving as well. Whereas surprising, taking the team to the next level, and doing a job with a young team has more to do with it then just winning.

I think this post says it all. Morrison has 2 things going for him, his team won and he shot better. Does that trump a better all around game? I guess to most people it does. Morrison is a good player so it's not like they just gave it to somebody that doesn't deserve it though.
I think winning doesn't mean you are the best player. It means that you are on the best team.

I am glad Morrison got the award, he deserved it.

I feel bad for Wolters and Hamilton, they deserved it too.

If Wolters would have won, I would have felt bad for Morrison and Hamilton.

Unfortunately, there can only be one POY.

Don't care about individual awards. Am excited for "Hardware Tuesday" though.

Inside it still bothers him. He'll never say that, but he's a hell of a competitor and anyone with a competitive bone in their body wants to win any award they're nominated for. With that being said I believe Nate would gladly take the trip to the NCAA over a league MOP award. SDSU is lucky to have him and hopefully he'll be the Summit League Tournament MOP. Go Rabbits!
