True, Oakland is currently in 4th and only 1 game back of NDSU (2 behind SDSU). They do have a road game at ORU tomorrow though. I think SDSU would be dialed in for at least a #2 seed if we get a win in Fargo. If it is a loss, the important thing will be holding off Oakland to avoid that #4 seed. I think <6 conf. losses will ensure a top-3 seed and we are currently a long way from that.

I think a win tomorrow is about more than just positioning for a seed in the tourney. Our guys understand the significance of the rivalry and they want this one, I'm sure of it. I don't know if that was the case the last couple of years. A loss is not likely to derail things for the remainder of the season but a win could propel this team to a conference championship and a #1 seed. I'd like to see that.

You don't know if the team wanted to win the last couple of years? I'm sorry, that's absurd.

Ordinarily I would agree with jackmd, but this time, no so sure. I think our guys have wanted to take the Bison down many of those 12 consecutive losses. Somehow we just have not matched with them at all. Hoping this time we do.

Where did I say they didn't want to win? Last years team certainly had the talent to beat the Bison and didn't. There are likely several reasons for that and part of it may have been a belief that they could win. I'm not the only one that wonders just that. Terry V. mentioned in his block yesterday that there may be a mental block. Read more carefully and consider this perspective, when I said "I don't know it that was the case the last couple of years" I was referring to my own belief that those teams really understood how significant the ongoing dominance the Bison have had over the Jackrabbits in basketball was to the Bison. They step up their level of play when competing against the Jackrabbits, I truly believe that. This years team really seems to understand that, at least the way they played against USD suggests that. I can think of only one game where the effort necessary wasn't there from the beginning and that was in GF.

As I think back to those teams of the recent past, the DI teams in transition and our foray into the MidCon/Summit there were times that I believe some of those teams didn't have what this team does.

So, take it as you wish, I am not suggesting any team doesn't want to win, I agree that would be absurd.

I'm with JackMD on this one. I didn't read it that way. We all know they want to win.

The way I see it, in past years this was the biggest game on the schedule because the Jacks were usually assured of fighting with NDSU for playoff seeding behind Oakland and ORU. This year, however, the Jacks are looking at trying to secure a conference championship and that may allow them to not put as much emphasis on this game. After all, a win over NDSU is only as important as a win over IPFW or USD.I really think this team is thinking more big picture than perhaps teams have in the past.

If, as an ORU fan, I might be able to give my own thoughts, I think this game is much more important than past years, precisely because this game is about first place. When ORU comes up to the Dakotas, many ORU fans are thinking that we may realistically only be able to get a split. That would potentially give us a tie for first IF you win this game that you could conceivably be expected to lose. I think this is one of the two most important games on your schedule. The other one is ORU's game at your house.

The games from Saturday to Saturday could well decide the conference race although of course, the reason they play the games is because anything is possible on a given night. Every team in conference is giving us their best game right now.

Nope, Oakland (4-5) is 2.5 games back from NDSU (6-2) and 3.5 back from SDSU (7-1). I don't see Oakland as much of a threat since they can't win on the road.

well State plays at Oakland next week and they have never won at the O'rena so OU is still a threat.

Nope, Oakland is 5-4 not 4-5. There's a big difference.

Don't ever write a conference/tourney champ off for a year. I'm sure many teams had thought that about the Women's team once or twice.....oops!

We have lost 8 of the last 9 conference games to Oral Roberts and something like 10 in a row to NDSU. I'm sure the team is well aware of both of these streaks. Regardless of who has been the better team, we are now at the point where we are gripping a little bit each time we step out on the floor against both of them. Just like getting the monkey off our back against Oakland was huge for us, NDSU will be the same way. Our guys may know they can win, but that have to get past that tightness that sets in and not only that but the confidence that NDSU brings to the floor with them. A win versus NDSU would go a long way toward repairing any confidence lost during the kerblastification ORU gave us earlier this year.
