Morningside Head Coach Jim Sykes
Jim Sykes, a 1989 graduate of the University of Nebraska, is in his first full season as the Mustangs’ head coach. Sykes, who has a 19-12 career record at Morningside, served as the Mustangs’ interim head coach for the final 12 games of the 2003-04 season while former head coach Jerry Schmutte was on a medical leave. The Mustangs posted a 9-3 record under Sykes en route to an 18-13 finish and a 14-4 record in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) to share the league’s regular season championship with Northwestern College. Sykes was named the 2004 GPAC Coach of the Year for his efforts. Sykes is in his fourth season as a member of the Mustangs’ coaching staff. He was previously an assistant boy’s basketball coach at Waverly (Neb.) High School. Sykes played two seasons at Hastings College before he transferred to Nebraska.

Last Time Out
First half woes were the Mustangs' undoing in a 60-56 men's basketball loss against NAIA Division I Park University on Monday at Parkville, Mo.

The Mustangs trailed 38-22 at the intermission following a first half where they made only 32.0 percent of their field goal attempts and saw the Pirates connect on 58.6 percent of their attempts. Morningside finished the night with just a 36.7 percent shooting performance from the field.

The Mustangs closed within two points with less than a minute to go when a pair of Eddie Ceaser free throws cut their deficit to 58-56. The Mustangs got the ball back with 26 seconds left with a chance to tie the score, but missed a shot with 11 seconds left and were forced to foul the Pirates' Damien Stanley. Stanley made two free throws to seal the verdict.

Ceaser finished with a game-high 20 points and a team-high eight rebounds. He also dealt five assists to share game honors with Park's Chris Gatson.

Brad Schmit also scored in double figures with 11 points and achieved a Morningside milestone by making three 3-point field goals. That gave Schmit 207 3-pointers for his career to break the former Morningside record of 206 career 3-pointers set by Chris Kuhlmann from 1987-91.

David Finklea and Jack Rother each added seven points to the Mustangs' total.

Ceaser's eight rebounds weren't enough to prevent Park from winning the board battle 34-30.

Rother led all performers with three steals.

The setback ended a three-game winning streak for the Mustangs, who will take a 10-9 record into a 7 p.m. game against NCAA Division I South Dakota State University on Wednesday at Brookings, S.D.

Brad Schmit, a 6-3 junior guard from Jesup, Iowa, is the 10th leading scorer in Morningside history with 1,195 career points. He is six points behind the ninth place total of 1,201 points by Jason Huff, who played at Morningside from 1989-93. Schmit has averaged 15.1 points per game during his Morningside career.

Eddie Ceaser, a 6-3 senior guard from Minneapolis, Minn., is in 14th place on the Mustangs’ all-time scoring list with 1,090 career points. He is eight points behind the school’s 13th place total of 1,098 career points by Doug Marx, who played at Morningside from 1973-77. Ceaser has averaged 14.2 points per game during his Morningside career.

Morningside is a NAIA Division II member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC). . .The Mustangs have nine lettermen back, including three starters, from a team that finished 18-13 overall and were GPAC co-champions with a 14-4 league record last season. . .Morningside will take a three-game winning streak into Monday’s game at Park. The Mustangs had dropped four straight contests to fall below the .500 mark (7-8) for the only time this season prior to their current winning streak. . .The Mustangs have outscored their opposition by an average margin of 6.4 points per game and outrebounded their opposition by an average margin of 3.0 rebounds per game. . .Morningside set a school single-game record earlier this season with 21 steals against Midland Lutheran College on Dec. 11.


Paul McGill, a 6-2 junior guard from Littleton, Colo., scored a season’s high 16 points behind a six-for-nine shooting performance, including a four-for-six effort from beyond the 3-point arc, in the Mustangs’ win at Concordia. It was his first double figure scoring performance since he began coming off the bench nine games ago. His previous scoring high was 13 points against Doane College on Nov. 16. McGill is averaging 6.3 points per game and is the Mustangs’ most accurate 3-point shooter with 22 treys in 55 attempts for 40.0 percent.

McGill has made 130 of 326 3-point field goal attempts for 39.5 percent and averaged 8.8 points per game during his Morningside career.

David Finklea, a 6-5 senior forward from Bellevue, Neb., finished just two points shy of his season’s high when he scored a game-high 21 points in the Mustangs’ win at Concordia. Finklea was the Mustangs’ co-rebounding leader in their previous contest when he pulled down seven rebounds in the Mustangs’ 72-64 victory against Dakota Wesleyan University on Jan. 8. He is the Mustangs’ third leading scorer and second leading rebounder with averages of 11.9 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. He has made 88 of 171 field goal attempts for 51.5 percent so far this season.


Finklea joined the Mustangs this year as a transfer from NCAA Division I Creighton University, where he spent two seasons as a reserve forward. He scored one point and grabbed six rebounds in six games for the Blue Jays last season. He scored nine points and grabbed four rebounds in 11 contests during the 2002-03 season.

South Dakota State is in its first season as a NCAA Division I independent after a longtime affiliation with the NCAA Division II North Central Conference (NCC). . .The Jackrabbits, who posted a 27-7 record and finished second in the NCC last season, are off to a 3-11 start this year. . .South Dakota State snapped a three-game losing streak with a 75-65 home-court triumph against Buena Vista University on Jan. 8. Joe Green led the winners with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Ben Beran also had a big game with 19 points and nine rebounds. Michael Loney joined them in double figures with 13 points. . .Steve Holdren, a 6-5 freshman forward from Champaign, Ill., is the Jackrabbits’ leading scorer with an average of 11.8 points per game as well as one of the team’s top rebounders at 5.9 rpg. Holdren has the Jackrabbits top single-game rebounding performance of the season with 11 caroms against Tennessee State University on Dec. 22. Holdren averaged 17.9 points and 7.1 rebounds per game as a senior at Centennial High School to earn all-state honors from the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association. . .Ben Beran, a 6-7 sophomore forward from Victor, Iowa, is right behind Holdren on the team’s scoring chart with an average of 11.6 points per game. Beran is the Jackrabbits’ leading rebounder at 6.0 rpg as well as the team leader with 10 blocked shots. Beran was last year’s NCC Freshman of the Year when he averaged 5.8 points and 3.9 rebounds per game and drilled 55.1 percent of his field goal attempts. Beran amassed 1,359 points and 1,082 rebounds during his prep career at Victor HLV High School. He averaged 18.5 points and 15.3 rebounds per game as a senior to earn first-team Class 1A all-state honors from the Iowa Newspaper Association (INA) and the Des Moines Register. He was a second-team all-state pick of the INA and Des Moines Register as a junior. . .Brady Hokenson, a 6-1 junior guard from Watertown, Minn., tops the team with 51 assists for an average of 3.6 per game. Hokenson is averaging 5.7 points and 3.1 rebounds per game in his first season as a starter. He averaged 1.0 points and 0.9 rebounds per game in a reserve role last winter. . .Michael Loney, a 6-6 freshman forward from Humboldt, Iowa, is the top scorer off the Jackrabbits’ bench with a 9.6-point average to compliment a norm of 5.1 rebounds per game. Loney leads the team in field goal accuracy with 49 hoops in 92 attempts for 53.3 percent and has converted 35 of 44 free throw attempts for 79.5 percent. Loney, who was redshirted last season, graduated from Humboldt High School as its all-time leading scorer with 1,323 career points. He was a first-team INA Class 3A all-state selection and a third-team Des Moines Register all-state pick as a senior when he averaged 19.8 points and 10.6 rebounds per game. Loney averaged 19.8 points and 11.3 rebounds per game as a junior en route to second-team INA and third-team Des Moines Register all-state laurels. . .Luke Geiver, a 6-2 senior guard from Sioux Falls, S.D., is South Dakota State’s most prolific and accurate 3-point shooter with a team-high 27 treys in 60 attempts for 45.0 percent en route to a 9.2-point scoring average. Geiver, who has converted 12 of 15 free throw attempts for 80.0 percent, also tops the team with 23 steals for an average of 1.6 thefts per game. He has the Jackrabbits’ top single-game scoring performance of the season with 26 points in their 82-80 win against Tennessee State on Dec. 22. Geiver averaged 2.1 points per game in a reserve role last season. . .Joe Green, a 6-8 sophomore forward from Waverly, Iowa, is one of the team’s most productive players with averages of 8.1 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. Green, who has come off the bench for the majority of the season, averaged 8.6 points and 5.0 rebounds per game as a part-time starter last season. Green scored 1,094 points during his prep career at Waverly-Shell Rock High School, where he earned first-team Class 3A all-state honors from the INA and the Des Moines Register following his senior campaign. Looks like the worst team in SDSU history was the 1925-1926 Jackrabbits coached by C.A. West.  They went 3-17.  It could be close.

Still, gotta love our Jackrabbits.

Several promising young players. Great coach. In a couple of years we'll have a good laugh about this.

I remember years ago, when I was a kid, watching the Jacks lose to Huron College. And this too shall pass.
