Nail on the head. Guard play is the absolute most important part of the DI game. Just as St. Joe's, they lost their guards and they are terrible this year. All the top teams have excellent guard play.

Our current talent in the backcourt is the lowest I have ever seen it. Nagy needs to get a JUCO guard in here next year. Even if one of the red-shirts is talented we have nothing else to support him. I say take a risk on any JUCO guard. The experience is more than we currently have.

rabbit 85 is right on the money. I've heard from people "in the know" that Cadwell is VERY good.

Speaking of Andy Moeller he just hit two threes in the last minute and a half to help beat USD 86-78. He always enjoyed playing and beating the Coyotes. Mavericks had a record crowd of 4900.

              Re: Arkansas State Indians

Frustration alert . . . rant coming up . . . I wasn't able to listen to the Ark. state game, but some of the stats just drive me crazy.

              4 of 16 from the 3, 21 of 51 total (or, 17-35 taking away the 3 pointers . . . just under 50%. Still bad.)

              Fouls: SDSU 15, ASU 20.

ASU up 11-2, 16-9, 22-9 in the first half.

SCORE BY PERIODS: 1st 2nd Total
              South Dakota State......... 535 713 - 1248
              Opponents..................... 674 713 - 1387

We're consistently getting clobbered in the first half, and then playing even in the second half (when the good teams have let up a bit and are maybe even playing their bench).

Here's what I want to see the rest of this season.
Strap it on, go out, and punch some opponents in the face (figuratively, not literally) right from the opening tip. Start pressing teams from the time they come out of the locker room. I wouldn't mind seeing two or three Jacks foul out each game the rest of the season, maybe once or twice have someone foul out in the first half. Throw out the "get two fouls in the first half and sit" coaching rule -- by the time the second half comes it is too late. Concentrate on playing tight defense the rest of this year and set that aggressive mindset going into next year.

Go out and win the first four minutes of each game (to the first media timeout). Then win the next four minutes. Then win the next. Etc.

If the other team has better players, make them prove it--in the SECOND HALF. This stuff about letting teams get big leads in the first half has to stop. How many inferior teams have come into Frost and given SDSU a good game for a half before running out of gas in the 2nd half? Bunches. It's the old "hanging around" rule, the longer you can hang around, the more pressure you put on the "better" team to execute down the stretch.

Oh, and give the 3 pointers a rest, this team can't hit them reliably enough to depend on them -- more often than not all the 3-point shot does is give the opponent an easy rebound. I wouldn't sit anyone down for fouling, but I'd sure as heck sit them for missing a 3 that the opponent rebounds, or for missing a free throw.

You wanna play, then you play defense, you pass and pass and pass to get the easy shot, you rebound, you make your free throws.

              Aggressive, aggressive, aggressive, aggressive.

              Done ranting. For now.

I'm beyond ranting anymore. What is that old saying "insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting to get a different result".
