I know that! It was a reasonable request, and I just wanted to bypass the actual names, and just note the relationship.

I've seen this posted twice now, so I am wondering who exactly were all of these guys that redshirted in the DII days under Nagy?

I don't think you have to red-shirt guys to have an experienced roster. Butler didn't have a bunch of 5th year seniors either of the last two years. They did have upper-classman that didn't have to lead their team as under-classman. They were able to develop into those rolls & take over for previous players.

Our roster is in the best shape since the D1 move. If there were a clone of Clint Sargent in this years Freshman class - he wouldn't get 15 mins/game like we had to get out of Clint. A Clone of Kai Williams in this years Freshman class wouldn't average 25 mins per game. We actually have depth & experience now. And we didn't get it from redshirting players. We got it from a reduced roster turnover.

        Re: Fall Practice

Some of this has already been said.

From what I've heard Prince will be the freshman that will see the most time. Will be the backup point guard from the sound of it.

Dykstra has gained a lot of muscle and according to coaches twitter accounts broke the bench press record, whatever that means

Heemstra has gained some weight/muscle as well.

Feigen is most improved. Also looks to have gained some weight as well.

I heard that both of the Zachs look good, but both might red-shirt due to depth at those positions + them both being able to gain a lot from a red shirt

I haven't heard anything on Francis

From all reports the coaches seem to really like this team. The depth is there as well as well. Hopefully this amounts to wins.

The two things that I will be interested in is whether there will be that guy that can get that rebound, steal, intensity play like Moss did last year. And a guy that can make that 3 pointer when its needed like Sargent did last year.

        I'm ready for some basketball........

          Re: Fall Practice

With Aireus Stephenson leaving the team, we now have one senior, 2 juniors, 5 sophomores, and 7 freshmen. Who would think that such a young team could be picked 3rd in the preseason Summit poll? Amazing...

A testament to the skill of Nate Wolters. I hope we see some development around him.

Seems like between redshirting and medical redshirts, there was no room to add any recruits going into the transition period, plus Moeller leaving really dug a big hole coming out of the gate. I believe he redshirted the math whiz from Humbolt Iowa, the name escapes me, but played both Joe Green and the other guy from Iowa who did not work out at SDSU, so I agree its tough to recall past rosters and alleged redshirting. Too say Nagy redshirted a bunch each year is an exaggeration.

I think Nagy back then as now was looking at current needs and maybe this is the first year he can do some redshirting. Prince strikes me as someone ready to play though.

This should be a lot of fun this year. Coach Nagy has put together a solid squad. I can't wait to see what happens.
                Holy nutmeg!

I don't think many programs redshirt players very often in basketball, except in cases where injuries are going to prohibbit them from playing anyway. If the kid can contribute, they should be ready to play - even if only situational, or for a few minutes a game. Marcus didn't get a lot of minutes last year, and maybe could have just redshirted, but I think the few minutes he got last year will pay off big time this year.
Horstman will benefit a ton if they're able to redshirt him. He'll pick up the pace of the game and add on some pounds. He'll be a nice player for SDSU a couple years down the road.

Marcus should have been redshirted, but they couldn't based on their need for bigs. Dykstra didn't need to be redshirted. He came in ready to play and I'm sure he knew he was going to play right from the get go. I'm really hoping they get a JUCO big next year so they can redshirt Devine. He'll be a much better player with a year in a college weightroom.

Also, I don't see any point in redshirting an entire class (unless none of them will play right away). The only reason NDSU did it is so they could all play for the NCAA tournament their 5th year. Most of those kids would have started right away as freshman. If players can give solid minutes as a freshman, they should play.

From the sounds of it baring an injury Prince won't redshirt for sure. I haven't heard anything about Samuel Francis. From the sounds of it the walk-ons will redshirt and probably at least 1 of the Zachs. But ultimately I don't think those decisions are made in stone until right before the season starts.

I ultimately think the red shirting decisions comes down to 2 things. 1 Will they help the team? 2 do they want to red shirt? If a player doesn't want to red shirt I don't think you can make him.

Hope and reality are two different things but here is what TV is hearing.

                      Per TV's twitter:

The SDSU men hope to be able to redshirt most of their eight newcomers. Sounds like one of the Zachs (Horstman or Monaghan) will play.

If you read his writeup about the Summit League conference call he also states that Prince is most likely to make an impact of the freshman and is further along then they thought he would be

I have serious doubts they will go in to the season with 8 scholarship players.

Exactly what I was trying to subtly hint at with the "hope and reality" line. Nagy hasn't had the luxury of redshirting young players as a consequence of attrition.
