  • The 3-point line

As I have been watching the NCAA tourney and the elite 8 (the only real one), I have been impressed by the talented players on the higher seeded teams and the scrapiness of the underdogs. However, I believe, the easy, shallow 3-point shot allows less capable teams to remain in games they have no business hanging around in.

Don't get me wrong I'm all for the underdog as will be one for a long time, but I like to see the most talented, well-balanced, properly coached teams play for the title. My point, the 3-point line needs to be extended to at least 21 feet, maybe further. Not to say current player can't hit a 21 footer (Bielien from 25'), but the sure won't shoot 50+ percent from 21 feet like the do now at 19'9". I enjoy the current 3 guard trend and spot up shooters, but I also like to see a motion offense utilizing all 5 positions including a strong inside game (like the eventual champion UNC has).

Time to back the 3-point line up, just my opinion. What do you guys think?

I like where it is now--"The great equalizer."  It allows a team like Wisconsin to play with a team like UNC and I think that's fun.  I would like to see an extension expirimented with in some preseason/exhibition games to see what happens.  But am pretty sure it should be left where it is.

There is no doubt that the addition of the 3 pt nearly 20 years ago, has changed the outcome of games and yes some teams that ordinarily would not stay in the game have via 3 pt completions.

At the same time, a very good defense is one that takes the 3 pt away from its opponent and forces the opponent to shot from further out. A good defense then would IMO reduce the percentage of completion and negate a change in the circle distance.

I think there are many ways of looking at this issue. This is mine. ;D

The long-range shot is about to get longer

ST. LOUIS (AP) -Add college basketball coaches to the long line of guys who can't stand prosperity.

Included in their ranks are at least two of the coaches here at the Final Four and, according to the latest survey, two-thirds of the basketball brethren. Never mind that we're coming off the most thrilling weekend in NCAA tournament history, and that 3-point shots, made and missed, were the reason for most of the chills.

From most coaches' vantage point, 19 feet, 9 inches is still too close. It needs to be a size 9 sneaker - about 9 inches - farther back....
