Re: Nate Wolters is the best gaurd in The Summit

Nate Wolters is a great player and can do some real damage in the Summitt League and even against some lower-level BCS teams but NBA is a real stretch. He has a little bit of an awkwardness to the way he shoots and releases a "floater in the lane" that catches defenders off guard. When you start talking about going to the NBA it is just an entirely different and very elite league. The size, speed, and athleticism is unreal. Better athleticism than Dale Moss with speed and can shoot lights out.

That being said, Nate is as hard a working kid as you will find and if that is his goal I sure as the heck am not going to bet against him. Look at the jump he made from freshman to sophomore years. Although that is typically when you see the biggest jump. He still can and probably will improve steadily but that will needed to make it to the Association!

I don't know a lot about basketball but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

    GB, GB, GJ!

Here's a link to Woodside's numbers his senior year. He was a great player, but he wasn't even close to the NBA....

I'm not saying Nate is NBA material, but I not just going to simply say it can't happen and what do Ben Woodside's senior numbers have to do with anything? There are a few NBA caliber players on the Gophers squad and for a large part of that game Nate was the best player on the floor. On every a NBA roster there are role players you have never heard of.

Fair enough, in hindsight it was a poor comparison, and pointless on my part. I think Nate is awesome and I look forward to watching him the next two and a half years.

Re: Nate Wolters is the best gaurd in The Summit

I know the NBA discussion is pointless and I wonder why people even bring it up but I suppose its harmless. I took a look back at those who were touting Woodside as an NBA prospect and it's some of the same who are touting Nate. I disagree for a number of reasons many of which I outlined when the Woodside NBA chatter may its way to this board. Sometimes emotion clouds logic. Nate Wolters is not an NBA prospect at this time. It is highly unlikely that he will be in the future, not impossible mind you, but highly unlikely.

I'm the one that brought it up and it was an earnest question.

When I made the original post, I had been thinking of all the Benson talk in this thread and how he's an obvious NBA talent. That got me wondering about what if Wolters kept improving through his four years.

I really don't pay attention at all..and I mean at all to the NBA. I couldn't name a guard in the NBA if you put a gun to my head. So it's hard for me to compare Wolters talent to what an NBA players talent is. I probably can't name more than a dozen NBA players period.

So, while I figured it was probably a far cry, I'd throw it out there.

                You baited me.

I don't want to give the impression that I don't think SDSU has the potential to place a player in the NBA. I just don't think we have anybody right now that can play in today's NBA. To be honest, I think right now is about the best opportunity for marginal players as NBA talent is diluted. However, with the globalization of the game it's still tougher to crack a roster now than it's ever been. I think it's only going to get harder as the NBA contracts, that is if the NBA contracts.

Just to add a little fuel to this fire, I just put up a post on Wolters since Oakland plays ya'll this week. The post evaluates Wolters using the Pure Point Rating, and I threw in a whole bunch of nice tables that can help put in perspective how great of a season he is having thus far:

                  http://grizzliesgameplan.blogspot.co...e-wolters.html

One thing about Woodside: he at least got invites to play in the NBA Summer League the past two summers. And that is pretty rare for a Summit League player. Larry Owens (ex ORU) spent some time in the Summer League and now just got a 10 day contract with the Spurs. I'm not saying Woodside will get the same, but it is at least a great thing to see the potential for more and more Summit League guys to get a chance to play in Las Vegas for a few weeks to get their name out there. Wolters has to be on track for that if he can continue to improve and play at such a high level. It will help if his team wins in the next few seasons too.

This is impressive...in 2 ways. First because of the depth and scope of the blog post! Thanks for doing that.

2nd because it puts what we are talking about in great perspective!

It will be interesting to track this over the next 2 1/2 years!

With the T-wolves and I think Utah although I'm not sure. I fully expected he would get summer league invites, Nate might get the same if he develops into that kind of player.

Getting drafted is a whole different story. Some guys get drafted for their potential, not many but some. Those some are almost always big guys, not always but almost always.

Nate is a great player and is having an amazing season against a very weak slate of teams based on schedule strength. Sure, he has performed well even against higher rated teams. This means virtually nothing as it pertains to his NBA prospects. It may mean that he will get the opportunities mentioned by Hoopsdude. So, I suppose in theory, Nate Wolter's current stats make him a possible candidate for an opportunity to display his talents against other possible NBA prospects.

On a side note.......too bad we didn't get this guy!

Pierre, S.D. senior Sam Willard leads the Pacific Tigers with 15.4 points and 11.3 rebounds per game. He is sixth in the nation in rebounding, and has 12 double-doubles in the Tigers' 17 games, which is third in the nation.

No kidding. Add in Iverson from Minnesota and we'd be looking at a much different Jackrabbit team. Hopefully someday we can come to a point where the best players in the state will stay home to play!

                                Dont for get Tviedt(SP).

If SDSU could keep all the top instate talent, it would be a solid team most years in the summit. Add a few minn and lowa boys to fill in our weaker years and bam.
