Remember that channelsurfing and justin.tv don't HOST anything.

For example, it may not be legal to be in possession of certain government documents. But it's not illegal for your site to provide a link to an illegal document hosted on somebody else's server. The host where the file physically resides is the one in jeopardy.

The DMCA says the copyright violators are the people who hijack and host those streams, not the people who publish links to them.
I love this debate and have asked many questions without answers lately. My main question is this. Why can I be arrested for possession of stolen material if I buy a tv for $100 cash off the back of a truck in an alley but don't have the same consideration when it comes to putting something out there on the internet that I know is stolen or wrong?

I'm not a legal expert. Try that arguement a different way.

Say a museum has an artifact on display that was smuggled illegally out of Egypt. Are the people that visit the museum and veiw the artifact committing a crime?

Or even simpler: One person is standing across the room holding a box containing a stolen painting. Another person points that person out to others, who then peer into the box and look at the painting. Which of these people has committed a crime?

I used to subscribe to the Extra, but dropped it because of the poor quality. I do live with in WNAX's over the air signal and I was getting much more access to the games on that than through the Extra. What was most frustrating for me was that often, if not most of the time, the quality of the product through I would find on channelsurfing was better than I was getting directly through my subscription. Sometimes my picture was better than channelsurfing, but that was rare. I don't know how the whole thing works, but if the free service on the whole provides as close to the same quality as the pay service, the market place is going to win. I have noticed fewer complaints this year also, but I attributed it to the possibility that most of the people that complained dropped the service.

I don't think the school has much control over security, it would be NeuLion's job, the company who provides the technology for the service.

If video game companies, movie studios, and record labels can spend millions of dollars to try to stop piracy without much effect, I don't have much hope that a university or streaming service company would do much better.

The quality has been much better so far this year, especially when they transitioned from JumpTV over to NeuLion. I'm not sure what would have changed, but there does seem to be marked improvement with the change/merger. The UMKC game was poorer quality, but I could tell what was going on.

I've subscribed to Extra for 3 or 4 years now, each year swearing I wouldn't do it again because the quality was so bad. The quality has improved enough to this point that I won't hesitate to sign up again next year.

Another thought on this issue, SDSU is happy when games air on ESPN networks or Fox College Sports, and doesn't get much if any money for those games.

ChannelSurfing could be viewed in the same light: getting games on that website increases the schools visibility.

The problem arises when SDSU fans, who should be subscribing to Extra, don't because the games on on ChannelSurfing for free, IMO.

Many years ago I worked for a computer company based in MPLS. At that time the prediction was that the USA was going to change from a goods based economy to an information based economy. I didn't believe that then and still don't. SF_Rabbit_Fan illustrates the reason for that quite well. Copying a song or broadcast is very easy. Copying a stero, TV or computer, much harder.

I'm sure there are some people who can't afford the $40, but if you can and are still going to channelsurfing instead of paying SDSU, you aren't doing any favors to SDSU (the school that you claim to support).
Do we buy goods from Walmart and other companies that offer lower prices or do we only buy higher price goods from American companies (the country that we claim to support). I know that some will argue that
Channelsurfing is using a stolen or illegal product.....but it really isn't much different than cheap product from foreign countries that use child labor or have various other forms of abusing their labor.

Ultimately, we all look for the best bargains at the most affordable price. I support my wife and young children first, which means if a game is free on channelsurfing I'm going to tune in, and if not, I'll rely on ESPN or this forum next. If this makes me the worst Jackrabbit supporter ever, thats fine, I can live with that!

A season ticket holder should get a subscription to the Extra for whichever sport you buy your tickets. Reward the people that year-in and year-out support the team.

I'll second this comment...Jackrabbit Extra works just fine. The quality of the work at different venues now is the only problem, but it doesn't matter whether you get SUU's game from JE, or from SUU's version, they are one and the same. The camera work is pretty elementary at SUU, but it was still fun to watch the Jacks (for me at least) for the couple of bucks we paid for the opportunity. And the money does go to the athletic department.
