The reality is most likely that Sell looked around the landscape of college athletics, looked at how many sports are sponsored by most schools, and compared what we have to what his vision for where SDSU can go off of that and decided that we sponsor too many sports as an athletic department. Then it made sense to drop the sport we currently have no facilities for. I also don’t mind the attitude that if we aren’t going to give the athletes a division 1 experiences shouldn’t offer the sport. Although the overall budget for tennis might be fairly low, to get them what they needed to be functioning at a DI level would be a hefty chunk of change. Unfortunately, just throwing up a pole barn and putting nets in it doesn’t quite cut it. It really sucks to do to the coaches and players, but in the long run it seems like a wise decision. I don’t think anyone is “happy” about it as goon suggested, but there are some who probably think it was the right decision. Myself included.

Just a quick overview of what other schools sponsor for number of sports.

My point being that we sponsor/ed almost as many sports as B1G schools. We sponsor more than every Big XII team I looked up. WE SPONSOR MORE SPORTS THAN THE TEXAS LONGHORNS. Holy crap Batman. On a Summit League budget. I know we do way more with less, but my goodness. It sucks to take opportunities from student athletes, but we should be realistic.

Given the financial pressures in the athletic program, much of it by significant leaps in the scholarship bill, I think it was a good idea to cut the program(s). Most people have never seen a tennis match and really don't care to see one.

Ironic, UND keeping both men and women tennis, SDSU is dropping.

I think you might have this thought backwards, We (May have) needed the extra Female $$ here to compensate for Wrestling or Football.

SDSU did lose their coach after the 2015-16 season but I don't know enough about tennis to know if they were senior heavy that year, the new coach wasn't as good or what. It has only been a couple of years since then. About half of the players on SDSU's roster this year were freshmen so you would think there would have been some upperclassmen the last couple of years but who knows.

Since there were more women's scholarships then men's, I would think that would add another baseball, men's track & field or men's swimmer. I assume basketball, football and wrestling are up to the max number of scholarships allowed.
I didn't look any of this up so I could be way off but this is just my guess.

Looks like we were decent from 201-2016 then dropped off significantly. Before that, we were not good either. Any idea why the big drop off? Loss of a good coach?

If I remember right, former player Michael engdahl was head coach during those years. Had the program going in the right direction but left for something in the private sector I think. Must have been a heck of a coach.

Add 1 more equestrian rider?

Most Div I tennis players are not from region but from overseas.

now they are. But I was just saying there was talent in the region to recruit from, but most who are good enough go to a tennis school or program that is good not staying local at SDSU. When I was on the tennis team yes it was D-2 at SDSU, but Tommy Chiu and Ben Barnes were 1 and 2 at SDSU and were from SF. I would venture they were better then most of the players that came when it was D-1.

So I looked at the past season on gojacks.com to see how we have fared in both men's and women's tennis. Seasons only went back to the 06-07. Here are the yearly results with totals.

Overall, looks like a good decision to cut base off of past performance and severe lack of facilities to support the sport. Do we even have outdoor tennis courts any more? I feel bad for the people affected and wish them luck in the future. Hopefully the players will stay Jacks.

From your post, clearly non-competitive. Sendlike I recall a few endowed scholarships for tennis. What happens to them? Amendments!?
