    Re: Danny Batten's Pro Chances

Pretty good read on Batten, aside from calling Stig the former SDSU coach on page 4....

Batten enrolled at South Dakota State in 2005. He entered fall camp listed third on the depth chart at weak-side defensive end, but it was obvious to former head coach John Stiegelmeier and his staff .....

      Re: Danny Batten's Pro Chances

JBscouting currently has Danny listed as a 5th-6th round pick. His 40 time is listed at 4.68. Good speed for his size and position.

I read that and wonder if he didn't mean to put former in front of the previous starters, not coach stig....

            Re: Danny Batten's Pro Chances

Jbscouting has put out a list of projected small school players he thinks will get a NFL combine invite. Danny Batten, Casey Bender, and Casey Knips are on the list. That would be great for 3 Jacks in the same year to get combine invites.

I don't know if they'll all get invited (I hope they do), but I am confident they will all end up on a team's camp roster.

                Re: Danny Batten's Pro Chances

Looks like Danny will be playing in the "Texas vs. the nation" all star game this year. SIU Deji Karim and WIU CB Patrick Stoudamire will also be playing.

                Also, here's a write-up from draftbulletin.com

Danny Batten, DE/OLB, South Dakota St: Danny Batten has been dominating his level of competition all year long. This past week he got the chance to show what he can do against the big schools like Minnesota. Against Minnesota he was a disruptive force and ended the game with 12 tackles, 1.5 TFL and 1 sack. Despite being undersized he was tough to block, doing a good job keeping blockers off his body and disengaging to make the tackle. At South Dakota St he plays DE but will most likely move to OLB in the NFL. He projects favorably to OLB in a 3-4 scheme. He has a high motor and has good speed which allows him to make plays all over the field. He doesn't shy away from contact and is constantly pressuring the QB. He reminds me some of Dan Skuta in last year's draft. Like Dan Skuta he will be making a transition and might need some time to develop.

Casey Knips will also be playing in the Texas vs. Nation All Star game with Danny Batten.

                    Re: Danny Batten's Pro Chances

Makes me wonder how Casey Bender and Knipps have become such "big" nfl prospects after Bender played in 1 game as a junior and neither recieved any kind of conference honors up till knipps getting 2nd team this year. Coming from a school our size you would think that would be important.

Knipps will probably be the most likely to get the best NFL looks out of the two Caseys, as being a 6'8", 300 lbs tackle is great specs even for the NFL. Knipps also has dealt with a lot of injuries before this year, so that is why he has probably been overlooked for all-conference awards in past years. Besides the size, Knipps also contained potential draft pick Michael Ruffin (UNI) throughout most of their match up and didn't allow him to get a sack in the game, so that is nice to put on his resume as well.
If you think nobody cares about you, try missing a couple of payments.

The FCS level does not test the ability of such big players because they must block players several inches shorter (simple physics - less leverage). That won't happen in the NFL. IMO that's why they invite players like Knips to showcase what he could do with players that can challenge him (like Ruffin did). Bender started his sophomore year, then was injured all of last year. Stig also moved him from tackle (which is what he always played) to guard because that is where they want him for the NFL. It's going to be hard to be all-conference playing at a new position for half a season.

College accolades and relative success don't necessarily translate to pro prospect. The NFL teams are less interested in what FCS level players do in college and more interested in the prospect of what they can offer at the pro level. Getting a look doesn't mean anymore than just that, getting a look. Don't wonder too much about it.

I know he dropped into coverage on his interception. Imagine trying to prepare for this defense when you have two versatile players like Batten and Steffen to worry about.
I think those instances were more along the lines zone blitzes rather than the players moving around between linebacker and d-line positions. I suppose that's splitting hairs though.

Batten reminds me of Aaron Smith who was a DII d-end from Northern Colorado in the late 1990's. He was a speed end who could hammer on the run in college at approx 6'5" 250. He went on to anchor the Steelers 3-4 defense as a D-tackle playing at around 290-300.

I say it reminds me of Smith only because I think he has a lot of growing to do yet. I see him filling out to somewhere around 260-270 in the league. If he keeps his quickness at that weight, he'll be a stud and will play for any team. Here's one guy hoping that happens. It's about time the SDSU defense had some representation in the league.
