  • Re: 2010 Football Recruiting List

And he is already attending class along with the DE from Kansas, so they can both participate in spring football!!

He looks good in the video. He does not waste time in pocket, he gets rid of it rather quickly. His mobility reminds me of Berry a little bit.

Last year we had 4 QB's and so far we have 3 for next year. You could also count Lotzer I guess. I think we are set at QB which is good. Now I think we need to focus on OL.

Which I don't really understand, I would think it's the most dangerous/ineffective route you can run. The ball travels 20 yards horizontally and 5 yards vertically and if a CB jumps the route he's gone for a pick 6. Also the receiver can't ever catch it in stride, he has to turn his shoulder towards the QB, catch the ball, and than turn direction again and go up field where he is boxed in between the defender and the sideline.
I'm much more in favor of slants and post routes and was really irritated by all the 5 yd outs this year (especially during the MN game).

      Rant over.

I think you definitely count Lotzer and throw out Sumner. IMO Sumner should red-shirt to give him one more year to play once O'Brien leaves three years from now.
        O'Brien 1st
        Thomas 2nd/3rd
        Lotzer 3rd/2nd
Sumner - RS (Unless he blows people away and starts in front of TOB as a true-freshmen).

I sat in the upper deck on the north west corner and most likely, drunkin-ly complained about the 5 yard out most of the game.

After watching the JUCO Thomas's highlight video....I have two comments why I think he could be in the contention for a starting job next year. 1) He isn't afraid to look off his first receiver. 2) He isn't afraid to run the ball or take a hit.

I get a kick out of some of the comments. Highlight videos........how impressed some are of their highlight videos..........do ya really think they would show when they f'd up? Of course they look good.

The weird looking formations with the QB in a short shotgun snap with the a running back behind the QB (and sometimes a full back beside the QB) is called the "Pistol" formation. Nevada does (or at least use to) run this formation a lot, as the point of it is to eliminate the drop back a QB would normally have if he were under center while maintaining a "down hill" running option (by allowing the RB to get to full speed before he gets the hand off).

Personally, I am not a fan of it... but I don't feel like going into the reasoning at the moment.

Highlights show us physical ability/potential, not usually mental capability or consistency. Most of us don't have the resources, time, or desire, to go out and watch a lot of game tape on potential recruits (that's what the coaches get paid for), so if we like the highlights and trust the coaches' ability to evaluate, excuse us for some of us getting excited about a recruit

You are correct in that of course they will sell their skills and make themselves look good. It is important to temper that with everything else you can get, including the stats. That is one reason I posted the 15 interceptions he threw this year. That is more than I would care to see. It also relates well to other posts who have commented on the 5 yard out patterns that they threw. I'm curious how many of those 15 interceptions may have gone for TDs.

Finally, I'd like to echo Kemo's points and have the chance to get excited for the potential of this kid. It appears to me that we now do have a nice blend of experience, talent, and youth to continue to build the program with.

I also did a little research on the new qb and come to find out he put up the same type of numbers that Lee Mondol did in Junor College. So that shows some promise

Hope he can throw the deep ball as we have a couple Wr's that can run it!

I don't know for sure but the team threw 17 INT's.

                            They went for:
                            105-yards
                            6.2-average
                            1- TD
                            A long of 35 yards

I don't know if this has been posted yet or not.

The video I saw of Thomas made me think he is the prototypical backup QB.... He didn't light it up, wasn't flashy, but seemed to understand the offense, and seemed like a football smart QB....

I couldnt agree more. We talked about at the begining of the year we were expecting the play book to open up more but it never really did. seems teams got smart on that and that may be why we played some games closer durning the end of the year. hopefully a year in the system will allow more time to get more options.
