Not quite. I define success how USD plays against the better competion. In the late 90's USD pretty much got blown out by both UNO and UND but in the mid 2000's USD was being very competitive, winning some, losing some and blowing out some in the process in regards to playing both of those schools. Nothing has changed about either program from before SDSU and NDSU left the NCC to after it. USD's strength can be accurately gauged by how they played the better competition. Even now despite a couple of not so good games USD played well against most FCS competition last year in their first season. It will only get tougher but USD will also only get better.

      1bunnies,

Why is it when you went D-I and joined the Great West, it was the greatest thing since sliced bread? Then you say the good teams (?) left. Do you really think your program is heads and tails above those that stayed? And why is the Great West such a bad league now? (because you left?)

I have said that I think the rivalry should be renewed but maybe you shouldn't do it. Forget the economics.........it's all about birds. And by that I mean how much crow you would have to eat in the event USD beat your bunny butt.

Doc is right, there is no need to play us. That way you can stand on your "we went D-I first" perch forever. If you do play us (and I don't think you have the courage to do so) you doggone well better beat us, or oh my.

      WE WENT FIRST
WE WENT FIRST ( fists pumping to the chant )
      WE WENT FIRST

Don't play us. Schedule and start a rivalry with Deleware. But then again, Deleware went to D-1 before you. I suggest you play NDSU and UNC over and over and over. Then you can chant:

      WE WENT TOGETHER
      WE WENT TOGETHER
      WE WENT TOGETHER

My opinion on all of this: The "who needs who?" issue is pretty pointless. The frustration about USD's position on our move is quickly losing its relevance, too. The latent desire for USD to fail in D1 is really just wrong. It's all a big distraction from the work at hand. We can hang on to all that, or we can focus on promoting SDSU athletics, finishing the Dykhouse Center, hiring a new AD, supporting our student athletes, and cheering them from the stands.

Like it or not, USD's D1 move makes this a more competitive marketplace. SDSU fans are going to have to step it up to maintain our trajectory. All the angst about the past just makes that a little more difficult.

I'd like to see us schedule USD and pound them a couple of times in Brookings. As to who "needs" the game? I don't really care. As a fan, I'd like to see it, in order to put some of this stuff to rest once and for all.

Again, I'm not telling anybody else how to feel about this. I'm just expressing my opinion.

SDSU's chant would be something like "we are and have been a top 25 FCS school".

USD's would go like this "we have beaten one FCS school and gotten beat by all the others, but we played some of them close so we are just as good as SDSU"

By the way, as I posted before, I am all for having USD come to Brookings in 2010 and 2011. We beat them, we pay them, and the contract is done. Works for me.

You shouldn't really be making fun of USD's first year in D1AA transition. I remember losing to DIII UW Lacrosse a few years ago and not in our first year of transition.

I really hope we don't forget our first years of transition, and the struggles, when "smacking" USD.

This is exactly why many SDSU fans are glad to leave game behind. The programs are at different points in transition to D1. That means they have different interests & needs. But you try to set up as though if we play and don't trounce you it means your program is better; if we don't play your program must be better because we are afraid of you.

Here is the point: SDSU is doing what it thinks it needs to do to try and win a national championship. Your needs and desires are not in the picture when making those decisions. Deal with it. Scream and holler all you want about SDSU fans saying, "We went first" but the fact is if you don't fit our needs, we won't be playing you. I fully suspect that sometime in the next 20 to 30 years, the roles could be switched and at that point do you want the USD admin to say screw what is best for the team, lets make sure SDSU is helped out.

You can't teach an old dog new tricks, but you can never teach a stupid dog anything.

Would we be paying USD any more money than we normally pay a team to come to Brookings? If that is the case, I say let them go play someone else. If they want to prove they belong in IAA, they ought to show up for less! If this game happens in the next few years, it would be the biggest game they've had since moving up. Don't get me wrong, it would be a big game for the Jackrabbits as well, but not the biggest. Not when we've scheduled, played, and beaten some of the best schools in this division. I am glad that USD moved up and want to play them every year, but the need to pay their dues like everyone else has.

Who is making fun of USD. We are a a top 25 type team and they have one one FCS game, it makes me laugh a little that they think they are as good as us, but I am not making fun of them

My post is about how things are right now. Right now if they want to come to Brookings get paid and go home I am all for it.

The only one smaking here is you smacking me.

This discussion reminds me a little (now, for those who like to pick apart analogies, I'm only claiming to be reminded "a little"), of the days when SDSU and NDSU were transitioning into D1 and their message-board fans deliberated with much seriousnness, about conference affiliation. The groundwork was laid for why the XDSU's were worthy and the arguments matured to why the Big Sky not only needed us but could hardly turn us down. But it all came down to: that's what the message-board fans wanted. The decision was entirely the Big Sky's to make. All the great arguments advanced by the XDSUs meant nothing if the XDSUs did not fit into the Big Sky's plans as they formulated them.

There are many good arguments that can be advanced by USD fans for why, where and how often USD should square off against SDSU on the gridiron. Fact is, as some USD fans have said (I think they meant to taunt but it was actually a very accurate statement) "the ball is in SDSU's court."

I suppose it is possible SDSU's schedulers can decide they want to schedule USD. At that point, decision-making shifts to USD to accept, reject or counter. But, for now, it is essentially SDSU's decision and some USD fans are not happy about that.

I see at least one USD fan has stumbled into the "chicken" argument: saying SDSU must be afraid of playing USD. I smile at people when I get the chicken argument thrown at me and I hold all the cards. I hope those in control of scheduling at both universities do not use or react to the chicken argument.
