You want to host USD in even years.... That means as Jack1979 pointed out, 3 straight home games, or 2 and 2.

From SDSU's standpoint, they may be counting on that home game in 2012, and would be willing to pay USD to come to Brookings three straight years. If that's the case, no big deal

Of SDSU might find another school to pay to come to Brookings.

You pay USD for 2010 and 2011. Then if you want to start a home and home with USD (which SDSU may or may not want to do, I have no idea) you could have the first game here and the next game in Vermillion. Each deal would be separate and distinct.

I like USD on our schedule as an every now and then kind of thing, but with only so many dates to go around I would not be in favor of a long term home and home agreement with them. If they work into our schedule fine, if not that is fine too.

It would also be possible for them to skip 2012 and then start a home and home in 2013 with the first game being in Vermillion

If, and it's a big if, we play in Brookings in 2010 and 2011 they are guarantee games where USD is getting paid (whatever the amount) to come to Brookings. In 2012, we start a true home and home contract with no obligation by either school to provide additional money to the other. If I remember right, the last game of the series before we moved to D1 was in Vermillion, so it truly is our turn to host the home and home game.

I may be seeing it from a Jackrabbit perspective, but the logic is there. The fact that USD would be getting paid to come to Brookings for two guarantee games shouldn't have an effect on where the home and home contract starts. In fact, the only thing that should effect that is where the last game was played...and it was at the dome. If USD or Ed doesn't like the terms and logic, then I guess they need to stop giving the impression that they are doing everything possible to restart the rivalry. If they feel they need/deserve additional concessions (more money, home game, etc.) they need to realize which program during the next few years is in need of football games and, more specifically, games their fans can drive to watch.

Re: SDSU/USD Share Open Date in 2010

If I were USD I would hold out and not be so quick to start the rivalry if it's going to be one sided with the games almost always being in Brookings. If I were SDSU (still new to FCS) and could get a counter FCS program to come to their place to play 2 games without a return home agreement I would take it in a heartbeat. If USD agrees to this I am ashamed to think they will let their former rivals take advantage of them like this. USD has already played so many FCS road games without getting a return trip and it looks like they will continue down this road.

The way things are starting out USD tends to play about 3 FCS road games for every 1 home game.

At this rate the typical USD schedule in the future will look like this. This would be for a 12 week schedule.

at SDSU (part of a 10-1 road home agreement)
at UNI (part of a 4-1 road home agreement)
vs Missouri S&T (part of a home and home)
              vs Cal Poly
              at UC Davis
              vs UND
              at Wisconsin
at McNeese St (part of a 4-1 road home agreement despite a recent buyout)
at Chadron St (no return trip)
              vs USF (home and home)
vs N Colorado (part of a 3-1 road home agreement)
at Peru St (home and home)

If I were a SDSU administrator and USD was seriously willing to play 2 games up in Brookings with no return game I would jump on it in a hurry. Why not take advantage of USD. The Coyotes certainly don't seem to think that putting together a reputable home schedule is a big priority considering all the road games with no return trips they agree to or get stuck with. The scheduling philosophies of USD is the single biggest disappointment in this transition. It was also a problem in D2 as well.

In no way should USD administration agree to nothing short of a home and home agreement. If SDSU doesn't agree to that it would be a NO DEAL if I was in charge. I would seriously consider a boycott of the SDSU games in Brookings if USD were to agree to something like this.

USD needs SDSU way more the SDSU needs USD. I doubt SDSU would schedule a home and home against USD without a couple games in Brookings first, let alone before USD is out of the transition period. During USD's transition, OOC wins are too important to SDSU and too meaningless for USD in terms of the postseason for SDSU to play this game on the road.

                  CF,
I get what you are saying, but the one thing I would point out is that USD is in a conference that does not give you enough games. That means each year USD has to go out and get more games to complete the schedule. Every other institution knows that and therefore can drive a harder bargain when negotiating with USD. The fact that you are now a counter helps, but you are still at a disadvantage no matter what institution you are talking with. It stinks, we know, we were there.

Because of this, SDSU is in a position to make a different evaluation of whether the game is in the interest of the SDSU FB team/program. I've said many times that the consideration that I want SDSU to evaluate is how it will affect OUR program. I would expect no less from USD. And at sometimes both sides will make the best decisions for their programs and come up with different answers.

You know they would agree to 2 games in Brookings to get this going. SDSU holds all the cards. As others have said, it would be a guarantee game and as 1979 analyzed very effectively just below you, you could restart a home and home after that, if that works out. USD doesn't have a leg to stand on as far as forcing a home and home on SDSU. You'd be crazy to think that they have some sort of clout to make SDSU do anything. Call your congressmen and senators if you want to force something on someone (see North Dakota's experience earlier this year for a revelation on how this will turn out), but don't think that the SDSU administration will cowtow to USD to make things benefit USD and not SDSU.

SDSU's benefit is all I care about, but I do want to see them play again. I just think it should happen when it benefits us. That's me being partisan, but heck, I don't care.

Meierkort just said on KWSN that he would play twice in Brookings to get this going but it is up to Joel Nielsen and SDSU. He is right, we are preventing many young fans from around the State of South Dakota, from seeing one of the greatest college rivalries of all time.

                        Attacking a poster? Really?

Isn't "head exploding" another phrase for "getting really mad" or "blowing a top" or other phrases?

                        I wasn't aware I was "attacking" anyone.

As for what CF said, I think if USD were to agree to the 2 games and then home and home here on out it would be an OK deal for USD. But I'm just selfish and want to see a game played here between the two while I'm still at school. I think it would be pretty fun.

Nielsen and Meierkort's comments should put to rest the discussion about who needs who here. And at the same time... I don't really care what the answer to that question is.

Right now, there is no offer on the table. The hint of a possible offer is two home games in Brookings. If that is offered, I'm certain USD would take it.

Exactly. Coyote Fan can huff and puff all he wants but the people that make the decisions at USD know where they stand. If offered, they will jump at it.

We aren't preventing anything at this point. This year is the first time they are a counter. That's what is important to us in the grand scheme of things and I will trust our administration on that. Prevent implies we are going out of our way to ensure that we don't play USD. I want them to play too, but the playoffs are more important than anything.

On his blog today, TV said "Back to the football schedule question, SDSU has maybe only two FCS openings through 2013 from what I can tell." those I assume are the 10 and 11 openings so there is no space for USD in 2012 or 2013 unless the current schedule changes.
