'Benedetto visited the University of South Dakota last weekend, but did not like the Vermillion school as well as South Dakota State. State offered Benedetto 85 percent for an athletic scholarship as a freshman, with a chance to add more later.'
Man, you gotta love this time of year. When you start reading about the recruits and then the verbals. The culmination is on signing day when you read TV's blog about the letters coming in. You always feel better when you hear they have come in on the fax. Can't wait for next week...
Here is what was included in today's sports briefs section of the Argus. I've also added our two latest recruits to the list.
USF tie helps SDSU land Benedetto
South Dakota State has garnered another verbal commitment, this time with an assist from the University of Sioux Falls.
Vince Benedetto, whose brothers Nick and Tony helped the Cougars win the NAIA national title this fall, said Monday that he will play football for the Jackrabbits. And how did SDSU discover the all-area tight end from Crystal Lake, Ill.? Benedetto’s uncle, Mark, the president at USF, sent some game film to Jacks coach John Stiegelmeier.
The school turned out to be a good fit for the 6-foot-4, 225-pounder, who caught 14 passes for about 400 yards with three touchdowns as a senior. He likes this area, having visited numerous times for Cougars games, and wanted to play at the NCAA Division I level.
His family was OK with that.
“I talked to them last night,” Vince said of his brothers. “They’re pretty excited. It’ll be cool hanging out with them, too.”
The Jacks also got a verbal commitment from Walker Woods, a running back from Waukee, Iowa. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Woods rushed for 1,998 yards and 31 touchdowns as a senior, earning Class 4A first-team all-state honors from the Iowa Newspaper Association and the Des Moines Register.
Could have been discussed before, but i don't recall seeing it. Just heard Stig say on the sportshow yesterday that the Air Force Prep transfer Whittier actually has five years of eligibility left in our program. If Crawford or Mondol win the job in the spring/fall, I wonder if Whittier might redshirt this upcoming season.
You can hear the interview (along with past interviews of Nagy, AJ, and TV) here:
Could be off here as life has been hectic of late, but I think Walker Woods just got added to the list by TV in his blog.
Looks like a stud, with Scouts 63 grade....

If you think back to 2003 the coaches actually brought in 4 Quarterbacks with Andy Kardoes (RSFR) and Brad Nelson (JR) on the roster. Reed Burkhardt, Andrew Hoogeveen, Clayton Wulf and "Steemin Willie Beamon" (can't remember his name - he transferred to SMSU then to UNO - Adrian something) all came in that year. Sometimes a QB isn't really a QB.
