    Re: McNeese State

Are any of the folks from down South going to put on a Low Country Boil at the tailgate? Maybe that is the wrong part of the country, but ever since I have heard of them I have wanted to do one. I just want to see a pro put one on before I try a Northern Plains Boil.

i don't think any of our fans are going to bring any food to the tailgate area. Just too far to bring gumbo pots/pans/cookers and etc. We will be bringing a few fans, most i know are flying and not driving. K

A low country boil is from the "Low Country Georgia and South Carolina". In our part of the country we call our similar meals what it is, "Shrimp Boil", Crab Boil" and of course the "Crawfish Boil". I am not aware of anyone driving up who could bring the appropriate ingredients but if you ask a Cowboy fan, I promise either they or someone with them can probably give you any information you need regarding how it's done.

Latest forecast from the NWS suggests a little breeze.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 70. Breezy, with a south southeast wind between 10 and 20 mph.

              Re: McNeese State

Talked to a couple of players this morning. They said McNeese is good. I said how good. They said McNeese is a much better team than Iowa State.

Not too surprising given the game MSU gave North Carolina.

So as we all know, it's going to be a very tough game. Not to say the players aren't confident, but they have plenty of respect for MSU.
              Holy nutmeg!

Yep, it should be a hell of a game.

I've got the van packed with supplies and the duck and quail marinating. Going to head north right after work tomorrow. Have a little pre-Hobo Day gathering tonight, 5K first thing in the morning and then up to the stadium.

I think the way things are shaping up it either going to be hard fought with either team winning near the end of the game or we could get dominated like we did against UNI. I think we need McNeese to be a little bit off their best game unless our guys with injuries can really step up. Having the home field is critical and I know we will have a large crowd, I just hope they can be vocal.

It will be interesting to see how the coin flip goes. Sounds like the wind will be blowing 20 mph from the south and that will definitely make a difference on ko's, punts, and FG's. I have a feeling this game could come down to field position if we can match McNeese on the line of scrimmage. Its going to be hard to stay focused at work tomorrow.

I know what you mean. I'm having a hard time getting into it today knowing that I will be in Lake Charles tomorrow at 8:30am to catch the team charter flight which is supposed to fly out at 10 am.

That might be a bit much but they do have good athletes. I know people say this all the time but they have a lot of speed and quickness at the skill positions. Also on defense.

But in my opinion they haven't had a really stiff defense like they used to traditionally have since 2002 and maybe even 2001. Whether they have that this year in the context of FCS remains to be seen.

They did pretty well on a play by play basis with North Carolina but gave up some big plays. I guess that's not too bad since Carolina is a BCS league team and has a top notch big play receiver/return specialist.

The biggest source of doubt about the Cowboy defense is, to me, what Delta State did. Delta State did move the ball pretty well on them. They just couldn't do anything at all with the McNeese offense so they couldn't keep up.

Then again Delta State's could be a pretty good D-II offense. And it's "gimmicky."

We'll find out a lot this week about the Cowboys. This is what Zem on the McNeese message board calls an "oil check" game.

Delta, to be fair, is usually among the D2 leaders in offense. So it was a good (and yes, gimmicky) D2 offense that put quite a few yards on MSU. As you say, that doesn't matter if you can score enough.

We've got some issues on the offensive line. Two starters are likely out for Saturday, and that means some people have been moved around and one sophomore will be in there at right tackle. If we can figure out a way to run the ball, we'll be OK.

I talked to a couple of defensive people for SDSU today, too. They said it's about discipline. Your RB is good enough that if we foul up, he could be gone. And if we get beat on big plays, they'll be REALLY big plays. We've got to avoid that. It'll be the usual approach for SDSU. Get solid play from the front 7 and force a team to grind it out. Of course that's also complicated by injuries. I don't have any insider information, but I don't think we'll see Schroeder. I doubt we'll see Kjerstad. We might see Campbell, or not. The good news is that our backup safeties have gotten a good bit of playing time and guys like Blackman and Wise are very athletic players.

I predicted a win, but it's one of those games that could go either way depending on how things get started. SDSU has the motivation of a huge crowd and homecoming. MSU has the motivation of proving that two years ago was a fluke.

                              Should be fun.

I think it's deeper than that. McNeese has lost a lot of respect from the national perception standpoint since 2002. It started with getting blown out in the 2002 national title game. That was followed by blowout losses iin the first round in 2003, 2006, and 2007. Before that, for the most part, McNeese usually played like a team that could play with anybody in the subdivision.

Last year's first round game was particularly bad. I think the McNeese program is in real need of a non conference win over a solid FCS opponent.
