    If anyone knows who might be running against Brock when he comes up for reelection please let me know. I'll be happy to support their campaign in any way.
    JackMD - I actually ran my grandfather's campaign against Brock in 2006 and he is deeply embedded in th western part of District 6. My grandfather ran against him then, but he has serious health concerns and won't be able to do so again in the future. I sent Brock a little note myself. I hope we can recruit someone to run against him in the future because he is obviously not a friend to higher education (SDSU) or education at all for that matter. (PS - He also voted to remove funding for Public Broadcasting - he was the only one to do that in the last session.) Sorry didn't mean to turn this into a political blog, just frustrated with that vote!

        Brock sent me a nice reply. He feels like the DC is duplicating facilities already on campus. He is of course mistaken, the DC will offer things not currently available at SDSU. Brock is concerned that too much focus is being place on athletics and in turn to little on academics and academic facilities. I explained that I felt quite contrary. A strong athletic program bolsters funding for the entire institution. We may agree to disagree and thats okay.

          Re: News regarding the Dykhouse Center

          This is a real head-scratcher...

          This project is using PRIVATE funding to be built. The ONLY reason it goes through the appropriations committee is because it's being built on state property.

          What gets me is that Brock Greenfield is getting his panties in a bunch over this... He subbed for me a couple of times when I taught in Doland and I though he was much smarter than this, considering his sister went to SDSU and was the student manager of the women's basketball team.

          Again... PRIVATE funds, Brock. Which means that there are no PUBLIC funds being used to pay for the thing. And that NOTHING is being taken away from other programs to build it. Geez, you'd think this was a good thing, considering how strapped the legislature is financially.

          But perhaps there's some jealousy over SDSU's success at D-I
          I am Ed. Fear me.

            Re: News regarding the Dykhouse Center

            here is the reply I received from Greefield;

            I don't have a problem with justifying my vote. I'm happy to do so. My opposition to the bill has nothing to do with the source of funds. If SDSU has a need for a third athletic facility (Frost, the student center we approved last year, and this one), the source of funds is appropriately the private sector. However, my concern is that SDSU has brought forth bills in the past two years to build such things as a straw bale house in McCrory Gardens, a toilet in McCrory Gardens, the student gymnasium, and now this....and all the while, their academic buildings continue to be in a state of disrepair. I have been in two that are coming apart at the seams. I just wish there would be some emphasis placed on that side of things before addressing non-academic issues.

              Turns out you need to install Real Player before the audio link will work. "Why are we a D-I school" has got to be one of the top-10 dumbest questions asked during the legislative session this year. Orv Schmidt did a great job though answering that question...kudos to him!

                Re: News regarding the Dykhouse Center

                Well if Brock thinks building this facility is a duplication of existing facilities, then maybe he should appropriate some funds to replace the exisitng facilities. The existing facilities are too small for the current university. When the HYPER building was built the school had about 6,000 students and now has 11,700 students. It is cheaper to save the existing facility and build another facility, than to replace the existing facility with a much larger facility.

                Also if he is so concerned about the lack of buildings for education then maybe he should help fund the construction of these buildings through the legislature.

                I sent both of them an e-mail. I would suggest we all do the same thing.

                  Here's what I got back from Maher;

                  "First you should have signed your name and where you are from. I voted no because this is going to be the 3rd type of facility on this campus and it was not but a few years ago that they just built one with the city of Brookings.

                  Also, I just voted for a bill that is going to put over $75 million into Science Labs across this state. This building received a donation in the amount of $6 million, this sends a terrible message to people who want to make donations to Universities. Pretty soon we are not going to be educating people any more and we are just going to be building sports centers. This money should have gone into these Science Labs.

                  In the mean time I have K-12 schools in my Legislative District that have been condemned and kids are going to school in modular units, the district is so poor and it is to small that it can't raise enough money to bond to even attempt to build a school.

                  But yet the Board of Regents take down and put up multi million dollar buildings like it is no big deal, these buildings the regents are taking down and spending millions on remodeling most people in may area of the state would kill to have such facilities.

                  The priorities in this state are messed up. I would just for once like to see SDSU stop building even if it is just one year. "

                  I replyed back with my name and location.

                      I got a similiar response from Maher with this exception:

                      "I would also note that I did not make a poor decision and I have not been poorly informed, you just have poor priorities.

                      One last note please change the name of the center. It is absolutely horrible".

                        This is very stupid logic. It isn't SDSU's fault that we received private funding to put up a building and a K-12 institution with no kids can't build their own school. This is purely a grudge. Personal feelings affecting politics.

                        And what 'multi-million' dollar building is the board of regents taking down on campus? BS. I suppose the current wonderful locker rooms the football team uses along with those amazing trailers used for meetings will fall victim to the new DC... hardly multi-million dollar facilities.

                        Assuming these homers had their way, if someone did make a huge donation to build a new football stadium, it wouldn't be built anyway because that funding should have gone to academics.

                          Maybe Maher should send an apology letter to Mr. Dykhouse for bashing his 'horrible' last name.

                            JEALOUS PRICK.

                            I would be willing to bet every dime I have, that he thinks the $400 million T.Denny gave to Sanford is a "terrible" idea and shouldn't have happened. Again, I can't believe we have people like this in our state legislature.

                            JACKGUYII - I really think you should post his entire e-mail to TV's Blog, I'm sure the rest of the state would love to know how one of our state representatives responds to their constituants concerns. Very unprofessional and dissapointing.

                              A picture is emerging of a very small-minded and angry man in Mr. Maher . . . that's rarely a good combination but strangely is often found in that subspecies of humans called "politicians."

                              He is right, you see, and you are wrong. And no amount of argument or fact will change his opinion because, you see, you are wrong and he is right.

                              (He's also a nasty person as can be seen by his remark about Mr. Dykhouse's name . . . perhaps all those calls and e-mails are getting under his skin. Good.)

                              The bottom line is that this is a guy that gets off on spending other people's money, and telling other people what they should do when they're spending their money. He's on an ego/power trip. He has no business being anywhere near a political office, IMHO.

                                There is unfortunately a Denny Sanford bias and a Sioux Falls bias that continues to resonate around many communities in the state of South Dakota. It is pure envy and jealousy and I think is more widespread than we want to admit. If Dana wanted to donate his money towards the Science Center than he would have done that. Many of these misinformed people just don't understand the Halo effect that athletics have on the university, its alumni and the state.
