Re: News regarding the Dykhouse Center

Though I don't agree with them I do kinda understand where they are coming from..... I think they are upset that schools (not just SDSU) can get so much money for athletics yet other facilities that all students use are falling apart and they can't find the money to build them..... I understand the argument though I still think the main problem was how this was approached..... The board of regents guy did a horrible job describing it, I have spoke in front of a Senate committee twice and have been to other committee meetings and the thing I have been told is if you don't know what you are saying don't go up there and the guy did not do a good job explaining it, I think some people thought it was just going to be a gymnasium and they look and say well we have frost, we have the wellness center why do we need to add a building that is just for athletes when there are bigger problems on college campuses.... Its just my opinion, if I would of spoke in front of the committee I would of said something like this...

Dear chairman Apa and other members of the board I am so and so and am here in support of bill # whatever, I am here representing myself (have to say this), the reason this is needed is because currently SDSU athletics is spaced out in numerous area's, when this project is complete coaches offices, athlete student support and athletic meeting rooms for most athletics will be placed here. The space in Frost is outdated and the locker rooms currently at CAS are very outdated. The space that will be left over will be replaced by student health along with much needed office space for faculty. The sum of this money will be obtained by private funds, there is currently 6 million donated by Dykhouse and Sanford that will start the project the rest will come from private funds as well. Though a design is not currently sought out a 2-3 story x amount of feet building is what is in plan that will be placed just north of the north end zone at CAS being part of the stadiums upgrades.

My point is it isn't that hard to speak in committee and it isn't that hard to come up with a statement that answers the questions before they are asked, it is quite intiminating when you are asked a question in front of committee so you want to answer as many questions as possible in your original statement.

I think we can move on. The bill passed as everyone connected to the project thought would happen. What Greenfield and the other guy whose name escapes me, thinks or says does not matter a whole lot right now. Everyone has a nose...and an opinion...

When does the construction start? Now that is what I am interested in.

SDSU and USD students pay the vast majority of fees that replenish the Higher Education Facilities Fund that in turn pays to construct academic buildings on the seven Regental campuses (don't forget University Center). Meanwhile, SDSU hasn't received much return on those fees in any years. (We're finally getting a chunk of HEFF money for the Avera Science Complex).

It is the students at SDSU and USD who have paid for the majority of whatever building projects have been undertaken at the smaller campuses over the last couple of decades.

I'm not saying that's wrong. The founders of this state made a decision that higher education should be geographically distributed and the reality is that larger campuses will have to subsidize smaller ones. I'm just stating a fact. Without the fees paid by SDSU and USD students, the other campuses wouldn't have been able to build any new academic buildings during the last few decades.

People in this state need to wrap their minds around the notion that there are two large campuses that have created some momentum and it isn't in anybody's best interest to slow them down.

There's another component.... Since the state generally cannot incur debt (there are a few exceptions), we raise the money to build facilities on college campuses through bonds sold by the South Dakota Building Authority. Here's the outline: School says "we need building". Regents approve. Regents go to Legislature "College needs building". Legislature approves (some legislators oppose). Legislature finds a tiny bit of money but cannot pay for the building. SD Building Authority sells bonds to raise the money. Building is constructed.

Bonds are paid back largely through the fees JimmyJack is talking about. SDSU students pay more for the fees -- get less back -- then students at other schools. USD also paying a lot. Mines students will probably be paying more in the near future.

The South Dakota Building Authority is the method used to avoid the State incurring debt. [I happen to be a commissioner on the SDBA.]

Any news on the timing of the beginning of construction of the Dykhouse Center. I would think they would begin clearing the trees and starting dirt work soon.

I don't believe anything will happen until the site is surveyed. The site will be surveyed in the next week or two, as the underground utilities have been marked.

EDIT: The site will most likely be surveyed this thursday March 27.

This is not specificially about the Dykhouse Center, but Colorado State is building a similar facility. It is an academic/ athletic training facility. A nice article with some financial information. I know we are well on our way for SDSU to have something similar. Go State!

It's never good to lose mature trees. Whatever happens, I hope it's worth while. A significant in increase in seating, mehopes. Clean up the paint chip haze on the east side. Onsite locker room issues too, if I remember correctly. Otherwise, it's already a classic football venue. I hope they don't make significant changes to the atmosphere. It should still be a good place for the Jacks to see the Marker before it turns around and makes its voyage home again.

Count me among those who will miss the trees. I always thought they gave the place character. But ... time to move on and get started on the center!

I just received a mailer regarding the Dykhouse Center. There will be a VIP room in which you will need to have donated $10,000/anually or $100,000 lifetime to have access. Does anyone know what this VIP room is all about?

It will be a cross between "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and Pinnochio's Pleasure Island. Candy, soda pop, and joy rides will be abundant. There will be various forms of entertainment ranging from a smokers lounge to a video arcade. I've also heard rumors of a cotton candy machine.

In all seriousness, I would assume the champions room will include alcoholic beverages, since my mailer also specified that you must be 21 to enter.
