  • Re: Southern Utah

Just before the play in which the defense stopped SUU with inches (I think they had about 14 inches to go for a first down...they got about nine or 10), my wife and I were talking about how the play could be a huge momentum shifter. Everybody in the stadium was thinking that. And when the defense held, you could physically feel a wave go over the stadium. From that point, we were playing FOOTBALL and it was a fun game.

If the Jacks had not made that stop, I am confident this team figures out ways to win and would have gone on to win the game. But, the stop set up a convincing win and not just a one touchdown margin of victory.

I give a scrappy SUU team some credit. It was a great warmup for NDSU, a beatable team as nearly demonstrated by Cal Poly.

Then I don't know unless that many people went West River Deer hunting. I for one got in the early season and shot my deer last weekend. The rest of the West opened this weekend.

Based on what I saw yesterday, the adminstation at SUU needs to make a coaching change.
Unfortunately, SUU has displayed this lack of sportsmanship EVERY year that we've played them. I voiced my concerns about it last week and, as expected, they were able to get some Personal Fouls called on our retaliations. I also noticed many of their players initiating conversations with the refs. I don't think there's one player on our team that Stig would allow to complain to the referees. Southern Utah's program is a joke and the coach should have been fired years ago for allowing his players to act this way on the field. Also, his 10 wins in 4+ years would be reason enough to lose his job.

Rep points for telling it like it is. SUU is a joke.

Something was wrong there. I must learn the details.
            From Terry's blog:

While we’re killing time, I spoke with Jeff Kolpack, the NDSU beat writer for The Forum in Fargo last night. He said that Cal Poly was playing a man press defense when it allowed an 80-yard touchdown to the Bison in the final minute. Unreal. After the game, Mustangs head coach Rich Ellerson - a defense coach, by the way - said that he should be fired and, in light of consecutive homecoming meltdowns against the Dakota schools, some folks may be inclined to agree.

I'm not totally surprised at the turnout even with the weather. It's not much different than any other year.

Believe it or not, for most people, SDSU football is not priority one. With the decent amount of home games this year, there were many that took advantage of the nice weather to do something else with plans to make the NDSU game.

The whole attendance gripe is getting a bit old. If the progress continues, it will come, but even with outrageous success I don't see SDSU ever averaging over 20K a week.

Yeah, that would apply to the current football regime, but we'll likely see SUU on the schedule again (definitely before USD), especially since they helped us get into the Summit League...

I have to agree. SDSU football is not a priority for many people around here. I've gone to two home games (SFA and Cal Poly) and plan to go to the showdown against NDSU, but I chose to just go to the VB match last night instead. I'll be honest: watching the VB team was my priority this fall.

People have to prioritize, especially with gas above $3/gallon and wages usually around $10/hour. For a family of four, a SDSU football or basketball game will likely set them back $50 or more. ($30-35 for tickets, $15-20 for drinks and ice cream)

                  Rep points for you!

Maybe. But we've got Cal Poly and McNeese as out-of-conference foes in coming years. With the Gateway, we only have 3 non-conference games. One goes to an FBS opponent. The other two have to go to teams that will help us bring in fans or get into the playoffs. SUU does neither.

Yeah, we won't have many more openings for non-conference games in the foreseeable future, but SUU would a likely candidate to fill a late opening because they usually have to scramble for games...and I would take SUU over USD at this point

If SUU does land on the schedule, the Beef Bowl or Hobo Day should get scheduled for that game, because those dates draw 10-15K no matter who the opponent is.

As for getting into the playoffs, playing in the Gateway will be tough enough; a win over an easy FCS game likely will help our playoff efforts more than a loss to a tough FCS game or a FBS money game.

I looked at the 09 schedule and I noticed that they back loaded it...
                        NDSU on pheasant opener
                        UNI the following week
Southern Illinois the first week in November

I think they kinda figured out people will show up early in the year for whoever and it takes a lil more to get them out of the house when it is cold out side.

I don't know if there will be room on the schedule for an OOC game or not. But if you read the recent Argus Leader article (somebody with more ambition than me will probably find and post the link) you will recall that we have to sell 4000-5000 more seats when the game is at our house to pay the travel bill for the return visit if we play SUU than if we play USD.

Can we sell that many more tickets to an SUU game than a USD game? I know a lot of people hate the idea but it will be $$$$$ that causes us to add USD to the football schedule sooner than some people think (my prediction). I don't think we'll see much more of SUU on the football schedule . . . if ever.

Gotta say something about the SUU game. Watched every snap from the sideline. When the head linesman through the flag on Aanonsen punt return it totally swang the momentum or we would have won that game by 40. I'm still at a loss to explain what happened. Apparently Parnell held one of their headhunters right off the line during the punt. I'd like to see the replay. The call seemed ridiculous because the punt was to the northwest corner of the field at about the 4 yard line while the flag was thrown on the east side near the 50 yard line. Seemed crazy at the time. Then, it seemed with each additional return we had more flags would fly. I was ready just to take the ball at the 2 yard line every time they kicked. I nearly lost it. There, off my chest.

SUU is leading the GWFC in pass defense. They really arent that bad a team, certainly capable of playing a good, competitive game.

Ps. You guys play UND we will play USD. Problem solved for both schools.
