Re: What is the Jacks football fan base

I don't know where you guy get this radio deal crap.... WNAX broadcast all of east river south dakota and a mass majority of west river.... USD's station (1570) I can't get in half of the time and I live 55 miles from Vermillion...... I think a television contract will come when they figure out what the Gateway brings and how other schools do it..... I don't want SDSU to rush into a television contract that doesn't suite them well so they drop it after one year....

In some ways I agree. WNAX has a strong enough signal but their content can't be geared enough towards SDSU, in my opinion. They have too many other obligations to dedicate adequate time to SDSU sporting events. Having a network with a "mother" station would allow us to have a 1-2 hour pre-game and 1-2 hour postgame as well as weekly coaches shows and other features. I suspect GoJacks.com will provide this service but I can't get that in my vehicle, yet. I love WNAX they just can't dedicate the air time we need.

When talking about having a 1-2 pregame and a 1-2 hour postgame with call-ins, I'm assuming that you are thinking football only.

My guess is that this could happen in time. If the team continues to grow into a perennial power in the Gateway conference then the demand may be there. Right now, it might be excessive. At Nebraska, coverage begins six hours before the kick, it's nuts!

Right now, with WNAX the largest flame thrower in South Dakota, it is where SDSU football needs to be. I can listen to it almost all the way to Minneapolis. You are correct in that it would be difficult for them to dedicate more airtime to SDSU athletics. As we continue to grow and improve that may change, or there may be a way to have a "Flagship station" with a network around the state. That is how it is done with most major colleges and all pro sports. This much is for sure, if there is a demand for it, then the advertising dollars will flow in, and SDSU football would be given the airtime. Just don't see it for a few years though.

USD is playing this Thursday night on Fox Sports North and CSTV. FSN is available on most cable systems in a 5 state area, and both channels are available on both Direct TV and Dish Network.

Which team is it that is DI in South Dakota? I get them confused sometime.

Good point. High schools get better TV coverage than we do! And on the network that carries the Twins, Wolves, Wild, Saints and more, and used to carry Gopher sports.

I can't imagine how those teams are able to make it since there are so many people staying home to watch the games on television.

OK, I have beaten this horse to death. My apologies, but this one really fires me up.

While out with the kids tonight my wife and I both wore SDSU sweatshirts (halloween costume jokes aside). At 3 separate houses where I did not know the occupants they commented in support of SDSU. One couple is headed to the game on Saturday. I wish I didn't have to work.

Yankton may think it is in coyote country but I would bet there are an equal number of Jack's fans if not more.

Here's a list of schools that have their games on TV regularly

                  Montana
                  Montana St
                  Wyoming
                  NDSU
                  UND
USD (on KELO against Augie and tonight against UNO)
High School basketball state tournaments - boys and girls

Here's a list of schools that are rarely on TV

                  SDSU

I believe that usd has little, if anything, to do with being on TV tonight. The game is at uno. It's being broadcast by Nebraska Public TV and being picked up by CSTV, which is quite common. CSTV picks up a lot of games broadcast by NETV.

I just checked and I could watch the USD game on 3 different channels in Rochester: FSN North, CSTV, and FCS Pacific. Or I could watch Virginia Tech @ Georgia Tech on ESPN, Murphy @ Daphne (High School) on FCS Atlantic or Southlake Carroll @ Grapevine (High School) on FCS Central. Just as many College games as High School games. Looks like they'll air any football game thats being broadcast on a Thursday night.

I'm also in the 3+ hours category, and I have made it back for 2 football games each year the past 3 years.

But only 1 basketball game (it's during my season)

I'd love to see some games on television. streaming over the computer sucks, and we need a TV deal. Period.

Re: What is the Jacks football fan base

I'm not going to say I know this for sure but from all appearances last night's game was not the work of either school but the work of the NCAA. Think about some of the slogan's they used "They chose D-2" and they also had promos for the NCAA's D-2 basketball schedule which didn't include either school.
I would bet that the main reason anyone was on Kelo this year was that SDSU started the negotiations and got people excited and then made an error in going with the conference packages which appear now to be just "blue sky".
It will happen. The athletic department has been exploring it and they aren't going to just jump into something without doing their research first which seems many of you think they should just forgo to just get the games on tv.

Being "big time" isn't about being on TV, its behaving and doing things "big time". The rest will follow.

CSTV and DII have an agreement. DII has become more aggressive in promotion of the division. UNO and USD had nothing to do with broadcast.

When compared to other Division I schools in this region, it's quite fair to say we are behind in television broadcasts. When we do get them, they are picked up from elsewhere. That being said, though, I think there are many 1AA schools across the nation that don't have many games on TV. I do think we could be a little more active, though, in making things happen. I guess I've thought for a few years now, that a radio network of sorts would be a good thing. Somebody else has mentioned this. So many West River ranchers went to SDSU. A lot of West River people, period. But there is no outrach that I know of made to them. They can't hear any games. If SDSU could get, for example, a powerful radio station in Rapid Ciy to broadcast football and basketball games, I think that would be a good start. Maybe one in the Pierre/Mobridge area, too. Even Aberdeen, where the WNAX signal can be a little weak, would be a good idea. And as far as television, I think some type of deal with KELO would make the most sense. I don't have much faith in the America Channel, or whatever it's called. The fact that I can't recall its proper name speaks volumes. We - SDSU, the school - have to prove these TV and radio deals would be beneficial to the stations. That's our job. It's not the stations' job to give us a break just because or take a loss or do the number-crunching. Thier job is to garner listeners, entertain and make money. The number-crunching is probably happening on some level (although it seems slow going to me), but we need to show that having SDSU games on the air will be beneficial. Our games need more of a ... media presence ... for lack of a better way to put it. WNAX does a great job, but many people can't get it. And nobody's taking their computers in their combine so they can listen to it on the Web. It's time to move ahead.

I belive that is true. I believe, via the deal, it was selected as the DII game of the week. So it was on for that reason, not because of anything USD or UNO did or didn't do.

That being said, I was hoping the Coyotes would put up a better showing. Opportunities early in the second half that would have kept the game close (very close) were squandered.
