  • Re: Cal-Poly Game Thread

It was a great game to watch; a friend of mine came up from SF for the game and had an enjoyable experience as well.

The good: Koenig, Koenig, Koenig, Koenig...great senior leadership there.
Special teams made three big plays.
NO turnovers while we forced two Mustang fumbles.
    The Pride was awesome!

    The bad: Pathetic crowd....
Our defense needs to work on defending the option; it seemed that Cal-Poly hurt themselves more often than we did.

The ugly: Scoreboard operations left a lot to be desired. They did not show any stats throughout the game. (The offensive yardage stats for each team read zeroes the entire game.)

Playing in SD in Dec. will put us lights out ahead of the southern schools to get to the championship. Granted, not this year. But Dr. Oien needs to start seeing the #'s in the late NOV. games, so if we're successful in the Gateway we can host play-offs.
I don't know what we have to do. You can't get a better late October night than this. And you couldn't possibly have a more entertaining game. More than 1,000 yards of offense (if you factor in our 240 yards of kick returns) and 83 points.
      Holy nutmeg!

Good point. I shouldn't have to come home and read this board to get Koenig's rushing numbers.

South Dakota has the most pathetic fan base period. Stupid, pathetic, lame doesn't do enough justice for describing them. OH IM GOING TO SPEND A WHOLE DAY AND NIGHT KILLING BIRDS JUST BECAUSE ITS THE OPENER. Tis a shame we have people in Sout Dakota who are within reasonable distance to Brookings who would rather spend a night a home after hunting because they are "worn" out from hunting Nough said on that subject.
Great game by the Jacks. Looks like we are clicking on all cylinders this year. Defense is solid. Batten played awesome. Everyone kept Cal Poly in check.
Offensively, other than Wags the recievers struggled tonight. Rushing was outstanding, big credit to the fat men up front. Berry is impressive.

Hopefully some of the so called SDSU "fans" will pull their heads out of their asses and actually show up to support the team the last two home games. But I'm sure the team will be rewarded with 4500 people in the seats for the Southern Utah game. The NDSU game will be well attended simply for the fact that NDSU fans will fill the stadium.

That being said, great game for the Jacks. I'm just a disappointed in the crowd. I expected the smallest crowd of the season, but 6500 is just embarassing.

I agree in general that more then 6,500 people should of been at the game... but the thing is a lot of people these days only come back to south dakota for pheasant opener.... I think the main thing was a lot of family was back and they kick out have a beer or 12 and tell some of those "one time" stories.... I thought a lot more of those out of stater's would of made the game but apparently they didn't

The Good: Koenig is a stud and Minett ran hard too. Monke wasn't too shabby either, he got the momentum going right away. We have some tough running backs. Special teams played extremely well. Berry is getting better and better with each game.

The Bad: Defense couldn't seem to stop that triple option.

The Ugly: Piss poor crowd...embarrassing to say the least. And don't give me "The Pheasant Opener" excuse and the "Post Hobo Day" excuse. Get out and support the Jacks!!

We could easily have scored another TD but that is not Stig's theory (like it or not). When his team is clearly ahead with minutes to go, and there is a chance to score, he brings in the subs and as soon as available, does the "favorite play" as another poster pointed out.

I'm bloodthirsty too, and especially since Cal Poly got a gift when the referees shafted us on their last TD drive, but it's hard for me to get too mad (since I believe SDSU knows what "class" is and this is probably a "class act").

One more small mention: Conrad Kjerstad, redshirt freshman from Wall, made a great number of plays tonight, including nailing some break way runners with saving tackles. His number was called a LOT by the announcers (of course nobody's name is called more than Danny Batten...he's amazing.)

I was at the game and had a great time. But everyone needs to realize that when Hobo Day ends we always drop in attendance. Needless to say when we have a winning record then maybe people will show up.

I was at the game (no weddings from family members who were USD grads)... unfortunately I had to leave because my friend's daughter got sick... and I was the one who drove up from Madison!

But it was a great game... and there really was no excuse for the low number, ESPECIALLY when it was a night game, well after sunset!

I agree. Thought the evening went great except for the poor crowd. Could not have had a nicer evening this late in the year. Very disappointing to look across the field and only see a handful of fans in the bleachers. I know some people had committments and that will allways happen, but come on fans, let's support the Jacks!! I was surprised by the lack of speed in the Cal Poly secondary. Once the backs got through the line, there were lots of yards ahead of them.

Jordan Paula almost broke one just after I stated this. And I understand Stig's coaching style and who doesn't know his favorite formation. It's just about all he can talk about in his post-game conferences.

One of the things I think is surprising people this year is that SDSU is a pretty fast team. Speed had been a challenge the first couple of years in D1AA/FCS, but Jayson Foster mentioned our speed after that game. And I think Cal Poly now understands that we're physical AND pretty fast.
                              Holy nutmeg!

I know you all are waiting on the edge of your seats for my game thoughts so here they are:

On the first fumble Jimmy Rogers made a great play - he got faked out at the line of scrimmage (he jumped the pitch) and then turned around and burned butt back to force the fumble. Its that never give up attitude that I love about this defense.

Dally made one pitch that reminded me of Jeff Bentrim's highlight reel pitch (look on YouTube its there somewhere). There were 2 defenders on him and he got the ball away just before going down.

Receivers did struggle in the game

                                Koenig runs heavy

                                Batten = MAN

Ramses was very frustrated today but he also looked a bit hurt. The touchdown was a nice catch by him.

There has been plenty said about fans showing up but I'll put in my .02:
I have always wondered if the GF&P kept stats on hunting accidents. It is my contention that opening weekend is when all the one time a year yahoos come out to hunt, I'll bet accidents those weekends make up most of the yearly totals. Last time I looked there were only 6 home games this year, I'm guessing there are several more available days of hunting.

Suggesting that our head coach isn't an FBS level coach as an excuse for poor attendance is flat out assinine.

I do realize that in most part SDSU is a basketball school, that is where the tradition is, but this team is building to something great. Get on the bandwagon now.

                                On to Davis:
A couple coaches told me that, on film, the stadium Davis has is absolutely beautiful. Hopefully we are not far away from that.

end of rant - thanks for reading.
