I suspect the door will be shut on future ex-GWC opponents as soon as possible after this year. Goodbye, Cal Poly, Davis and SUU. Nice knowing you.
I seen some the the NDSU/SFA game on Fox College Sports (Midwest and Pacific), SFA is not that bad of a team. Plus it was the Bisons first games and they had way too many turnovers. Bottom line is they won.

With our running game, why are we throwing the ball 40 times a game ?

it was a great game plan. The run was getting stopped. One big play and we would have won the game.

            Youngstown State holds off Jacks

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - This much is certain: South Dakota State is game.

For the second week in a row, the Jackrabbits rallied and drew even in the fourth quarter on the road against a team from the renowned Gateway Football Conference, the league SDSU is joining next season.

Yet the Jacks have nothing to show for their effort, dropping to 0-2 with a 23-17 loss at sixth-ranked Youngstown State - a four-time national champion and two-time defending Gateway champion - on Saturday night before a crowd of 16,118 at Stambaugh Stadium.
"It's a loss," Jackrabbits senior cornerback Brock Gentile said. "You come out with a win or a loss; there's nothing more to say."

The outcome was cut and dried, but the journey was not. . . . (read more)

Jackrabbits don't want pat on back for losing

YOUNGSTOWN — South Dakota State head coach John Stiegelmeier doesn't like to get pats on the back for losing efforts.

The veteran coach of the Jackrabbits watched his team take a Gateway Conference opponent to the wire in a losing effort for the second week in a row after dropping a 23-17 decision to Youngstown State University Saturday night.

SDS, which will become a member of the league next year, lost to Western Illinois 29-26 last weekend in a four-overtime contest.
"I think the Gateway is a great league," Stiegelmeier said. "I think this game tonight says a lot about the fiber of our football team, especially with the way we came back.

"But you can't rely too much on building on a loss. We gotta win this game and we have to put ourselves in the center of this league and see what happens."

              Verification of talent

Youngstown State University coach Jon Heacock said the hard-fought victory by the Penguins only verified what he knew about the Jackrabbits.

"This game verified what we already knew," Heacock said. "They are a good football team.
"I already knew that and they verified that they belong [in the Gateway] and they will against every team they play." . . . (read more)

It seems we're not ready to play. I'm sorry, but what other conclusion is there? I don't have one, but I'll listen if you do. To me, I guess, it points to coaching. We show we can play with very good teams, but not until we're 10, 14, 17, 20 points down. Then we come storming back. If we were just ready to go from the start, it would seem things would be much smoother for players and fans alike. Any thoughts?
Not to take away from what State does in the 2nd quarter, but I think it's hard for any team that dominates the 1st half to play the 2nd with the same intensity. If they do, those are the really great teams. Add the fact that the coaches as well may not be working as hard making the proper adjustments.

Also, I think it is harder for the "underdog" in new matchups to come in and dominate from the start. Without looking up the facts, I think that State does better in the first half with common oponents than first time meetings.

Is not football somewhat like boxing, in the opening round, a lot of sparing to try and determine what the opponent can do and will do? Its great when we can come out of the box and trample the opponent, but I dont expect that to happen this year because we are still playing new opponents. Youngstown has four national titles. They were very good even when they were D2. Also around Youngstown and nearby Penn, some of America's best high school football is played. Youngstown does not have far to go to get recruits. I think we fought hard. There is always going to be something that can rattle the team, and according to the Argus, it was the no huddle formation that Youngstown used. They were probably spooked by it, but heck I probably would be too, if you put some pads on me and said get out there. I would be more than spooked. I admire our guys for coming back and now I hope we can find ways to win these type of games.

Its not a moral victory, but its a great effort and I am as proud of our guys as you can possibly be. These guys are young enough to be my grandsons. So I am as proud of them just as their their biological and adopted grandparents are proud. I doubt there will be any old gruff grampas asking why we had such a slow start. Slow starts? So what, you can only give it your best shot, and thats what our guys did do. As frustrating as it is to come up short, its better than what our last SDSU team was able to accompolish in the playoff game in 1979. We have won in Youngstown before and we will win again.

Valiant effort, not quite enough in the end. Learn from mistakes and strap it on for one heck of a good UNI team next weekend.

I was at the game on the sidelines, the first time I've had a chance to see one of Stig's teams go about their work from up close. It was impressive. Those young men are all business. They didn't get discouraged for a second, and they have confidence in what they can do. The closest thing I can compare it to is the women's basketball team. I've always been impressed with how AJ's players do their thing and don't let anything bother them. Like our very successful women's basketball team, this football team shrugs off adversity and believes they can win no matter what happens. They encourage their teammates when they make a mistake and they don't get too high when something good happens. It's an impressive bunch of players and coaches and SDSU fans should be very proud of them.

UNI had better watch out next week. These guys are hungry.
                          Holy nutmeg!

Great effort on the near-comeback last night. The Jacks have played with two solid teams, but just haven't been able to get the W. Much better passing game than last week. The adjustments were made to become a better team.

The Jacks were 0-2 coming into the UNI game last year, but still finished ranked.

Like a couple people have said, even with an 0-2 record now, I see no reason why the Jacks can't compete for the GWFC title.

Ryan Berry's 28 completions was the most single-game by any SDSU QB since we moved to DI. I think he is going to get more comfortable and better with each game, hopefully we'll be able to make some more deep completions. 16 yds was our longest pass last night.

If you read the links to the Youngstown newpaper, the Youngstown coach indicates that they did not expect short passing game to come from Barry. With the numerous D1 FBC transfers from places like Penn State, they had people that could keep up with LaRon Harris and provide coverage against the long pass. Apparently this what they prepared for from Berry. I think our coaches had a great game plan. If short passes are going to work like they did then maybe thats what our team should do. No doubt Berry was on for a great portion of the game. If he could take back the pick pass in the ending minutes, I am sure he would.
