  • Eidsness is fine. He adapted our offenses to fit the players we had over the years, not the other way around. As mentioned, he has coached some of the greatest offensive production seasons in both school and MVFC history in both rushing and passing.

Special Teams Coordinator we have always had, as does every team in existence. I believe you are thinking more about a specific coach related to teaching the fundamentals of special teams - kicking, holding, snapping, etc. A special teams coordinator is exactly like an OC or DC, they put together the entire game plan of all special teams plays. When you think that probably 1/5? of the game is special teams plays, it is actually a very underrated position.

On the coaching hierarchy it probably goes either: 1)HC, 2a/b) OC and DC, 4)STC or it goes 1)HC 2a/b/c) OC, DC, STC. The unique thing that a STC has going for them, and often why they are tagged with a title such as "Assistant Head Coach" is because they deal with players on both offense and defense, unlike a OC/DC. They also deal a little bit more with game strategy, time management, time out uses, all of that odd stuff that often times goes unnoticed or unappreciated until a mistake happens and everyone notices.

      • Coaches are all following Brayden Gage, so I assume he is on the staff again. All the work that he has been doing (including just following an NIU DB who entered the portal late December) has been for the Jacks.

It seems like Thomas and Gage have kind of been the unsung heroes with how active it looks like they are looking for new portal players or recruits. Or as someone else pointed out these hires at least allow for some sort of recent connection to last years staff as it applies to recruits / coaches in the area and probably just friendly familiar faces for the players that stayed. Based on that Iowa Western guy tweet, Thomas played a hand in that happening.

        • It looks like a stand alone special teams coordinator has only existed for the last two years. Prior to that it was a position pawned off on someone who also had other responsibilities, i.e. cornerbacks/special teams coach.
One hand points to campus...the other to the liquor store.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking of. Appreciate the detailed response from mnjackrbt. So Jackson should be paid 4th highest on team in theory.

            • Dan Jackson introductory press conference is live!

SDSU Athletics YouTube. Audio is a bit wonky it seems, but still can tell what's being said!

              Edit: Audio fixed already!

              • Eidsness is beyond fine... you could argue, other than Lujan, probably the best OC we've ever had, and both times he was OC here, he springboarded into a bigger job.

                He's good.

Bergy... my only hesitation about him, is that he was Co-DC with Jimmy, and after he left... and Jimmy took over, the defense got more aggessive and better. Maybe that was just because there is only one guy calling the shots? IDK.

Bergy has a great resume though, and having experience here will be beneficial.

But it's all about the players. Having better players makes your team so much better. We saw that with the facilities and resources build up.

Jackson is an excellent recruiter, by all accounts.

So getting the collective going is the next thing...and we'll be back quickly.

How much of the aggressiveness of the defense was a function of Stigs conservatism? I always got the impression Stig preferred the defense playing more straight up and I believe Stig was not a big fan of blitzing.

I did notice Washington State is missing a DLine coach and Jalon Bibbs wasn't mentioned in the WSU article Zimmer mentioned with his tweet about Jimmy's staff (Zimmer was surprised about Kracht, but a few days ago he was already following recruits on the west coast, WSU AD staff, etc).

Jalon is recruiting for someone, and he happens to share his list of a variety of coaches, several with just I Jackson or just D Thomas, a few with just DJ or even Jimmy. Some even with the UIW coach so I guess everyone is going after everyone. Part of me wonders if he's on Jackson's staff and that's partly why we got Clayborne back. Jalon happens to be following the Colgate guard the Jacks offered (who Kobe is also following) two days ago. Jalon has not been retweeting any of the Jacks coaching announcements or player announcements.

Here is an interesting sequence of follows from the Colage player at some point earlier. Kobe Claymore, Brayden Gage (presumably still working for Jacks), Austin Flyger (DL Coach UND), and Deontae Cooper then a bunch of other DL coaches. Flyger's name sandwiched between the others might just be coincidence.

I recall that being mentioned when Brown was the DC, and I think Stig admitted allowing freer rein near the end of his tenure.

Would've been great to have been a "rabbit in the den" during strategy sessions to see if at least some staff during co-DC timeframe was reluctant to blitz because of belief it imperiled DBs

                      • Excellent interview with Eidsness, including how tenure at NIU evolved and how that damn disease cancer can impact a family.

Glad he and his family are back and his wife is healthy now. I didn't realize they had a son currently attending SDSU.

It would be great to keep Bibbs. You would think that he would have been announced by now since he wouldn't need to go through all the HR stuff. Unless they want him to talk with Bergey in person before making a decision.

I didn't realize he has a son at SDSU. Pretty cool. For those who haven't heard Sell's interview with Gaskins and Zimmer, pretty interesting, including his discussion of Rogers replacing Stig. Sort of a last man standing comment, referencing how it would have been interesting if Jackson had still been on the staff.

                            • Kracht has to be replaced, that is a very under-rated portion of the ascension to a national title team.

They haven't had the slip up games like in the past.

Bibbs now followed by WSU football twitter, and Bibbs tweeted out the WSU NFL playoff version of what Jackson tweeted out. I guess the shared recruits are just coincidence.
