I do not know whaat to think of USD. They have played four bad teams, Missouri, NDSU and YSU.
The only games I can look into are the NDSU game and the YSU game. Both of those teams are good teams and USD won both games but they were struggles. USD had big leads and almost let them slip away. I do not know if NDSU overlooked them and did NOT show up in the first half but USD did hold on. YSU almost came back but they had some timely penelities that cost them.
SDSU hasn't had much of a turnover problem this season but they sure make more than their share of penalties.
    I will take SDSU 38-24

Rece Davis is really mad you played off his name relative to an employee of USD's marketing department.

Answers: Yes, it's a rivalry. It always has been. It always will be. It has not in recent years been SDSU's biggest football rivalry, that would be NDSU. I would say that the performance of USD's squad this year has significantly narrowed the RIVALRY GAP!!!!! between NDSU and USD for SDSU.

Many schools struggle to maintain a single rivalry with another school. SDSU has a buffet of schools which are legitimate rivals, just depending on the sport(s) involved--I consider USD and NDSU, and possibly ORU as all-sports rivals (with UND and perhaps Omaha sniffing around that status as well). Denver's a major WSoc rival. I'm sure if I thought about it a while I could come up with others for individual sports.

So the question isn't so much "who is/are SDSU's rival(s)," it's where do you draw the line.
I'd consider USD to be the biggest rival across all sports. I would also consider this years game against USD to be bigger then the NDSU game by way of USD being better.

If the good guys go out there and play up to their ability, I would predict a game similar to the UND game. If we come out not ready to play, it'll be a dogfight just like SIU. Cannot afford to lost this one, not just for rankings but because it would hand USD their biggest win since moving to D1.

what is the reason? it is clearly the jacks and the bison who are both near the top of the most different sports, particularly the widely considered bigger sports- football, basketball, baseball, softball

really the only sports that usd is consistently ahead of at least one of SDSU and NDSU are WBB, volleyball, and swimming diving

they have no baseball and no wrestling the jacks and bison are always in the top 3 or 4 in both sports
they have good XC and T and F but definitely no more of a rival than the bison in those

since the move to D1 the bison have been, currently are, and most likely always will be our top rival. their athletic program has a far more consistent vision and on field product than usd has ever shown

I would offer that the modern era of SDSU football began with the hiring of Mike Daly in late 1990. It was at that point that the SDSU administration started moving significant resources into the football program. Coach Stig, serving as an assistant, was an important part of that staff. Beginning in 1991, SDSU has played USD 25 times. We did not play them from 2004 to 2011 because USD remained at the NCAA D2 level. We did not play USD during the odd 2020/2021 Covid season. Our record against USD since 1991 is 20 wins against 5 losses. Past records are meaningless whenever rivals meet. Yes, they are a rival, especially among the 40+ and older set. A lot is on the line and it's going to be quite a show.

I would agree with this- the more sports you compete in against another school the bigger the rivalry.

I would love to surrounded by some rowdy Jackrabbits… might have to try and make a ticket trade

The perception of the rivalry is more an age thing and an in-state thing.
if you are 25 and are from MN and came to SDSU, why would you think anything other than NDSU?
If you are 40+ grew up in SD and went to SDSU, you grew up here during the D2 days,USD vs SDSU will always be heated. Families divided, friendships were divided. Much #$%@ talking occurred. Coyotes or Jackrabbit pelts were thrown on gym floors. During these times. NDSU and UND pretty much shoved our faces in the dirt and playoffs weren't even thought off. SO, beating USD was priority, because we frankly never ran into many fans of other schools and the internet didn't really exist until the mid-90s.
With fans like this who needs enemas.....

Plus, the frequency of interactions impacts the rhetoric and banter that surrounding this. I'm more apt to encounter a USD fan/alum here in SD than I am an NDSU one (not that the latter don't exist, sometimes darkening our door with ghastly Bison paraphrenalia)

I'm torn between getting sucked into the media vortex of who's in and who's out of the vehn diagram of rivalry versus looking at the actual game before us.

It seems to me USD has more to prove in the standings with this game than SDSU. They are hanging their hat on NDSU and a middling YSU wins versus UND, UNI, SIU, and middling ISU-r. If we want to say USD is a paper tiger, we could say the same for NSDU with their only conf wins over MSU and WIU. SDSU has earned their spot in the polls more so than USD.

                              Go Jacks!

Whether USD is a paper tiger will be determined in the next three weeks. SDSU, SIU and UND are on the slate. 3 losses and they are who we hoped they were. 2 loses and they are improved from last year. 1 loss and they are legit. 0 losses and I will be jumping off of a cliff. Go Jacks!
