Jimmy kind of brushed off some of the penalties on his post-game radio spot, said he'd hear about it all week. Well he should, your team has a reputation now and refs will continue to call those border-line calls. Team has to have more discipline going forward, will cost them a game this year the way it's going.

The return was called back because the refs said the returner called for a fair catch and the ball was dead upon fielding the kick. It doesn't appear that the returner intended to call for a fair catch but as he ran towards the kick he extended his right hand and was pointing (at something) and extended his left hand out and up and rotated his left arm.
The rule states that a fair catch is signaled by extending the arm overhead and waiving from side to side. The replay was not clear - was his arm over his head? There was a long replay and presumably the refs had an angle TV didn't show and brought the kick back. Iowa's garbage WB promptly threw an INT and Minnesota won for the first time in I.C. since 1999.
In Carbondale, it wasn't clear to me that the returner got the arm above his head. The defenders obviously couldn't see it and refs didn't blow the whistle. The receiver didn't even know if the play was dead.
The MVFC definately needs to do some remedial work with its refs and rescind the "flag the Jacks" memo.

After watching the replay, I think Janke could have copied the fair catch "signal" given by the Suzuki returner earlier in the game, and see if the ref would call the same thing again, or show himself to be a biased hypocrite, but Janke's too disciplined to take that chance, to his credit, but if it was me, I'd be awful tempted to see if the ref would actually show that much bias in the same game and in an exact same situation to call the plays differently, according to the color of the uniform, also I'd be too afraid of Jimmie's chewing out if it didn't happen as i envisioned it,.... but, It sure would put the ref in a difficult spot.....

They held up for a second to allow the ref to blow it dead but they didnt. How can that be a fault if they dont singal fair catch. I have seen better effort attempts on a fair catch not be called by the ref. League has a lot of explaining for why they seem to screw sdsu over weekly with mystery calls etc."The most rewarding things you do in life, are often the ones that look like they cannot be done.” Arnold Palmer

Salemjack: I’m curious about your extreme dislike of Coach Rogers as demonstrated by your posts during this football season. What’s up with that? It’s one thing fo post fact-based critical comments on a D1 head football coach but there seems to be some underlying problem driving your criticism of the first- year coach whose team happens to be undefeated and earning its ranking in FCS football. So now you suggest a football team should be run like a platoon of Navy Seals?

Seems like we're kind of "witch hunting" ol' salem when there is at least one other poster more consistently exercising his/her own version of ani-Rogers "extreme leadership."

I’m sure our coaches are very concerned about penalties against SIU (and in some prior games).. But in the SIU game, that concern has to be tempered by the obvious Keystone Kops Krew called in to ref the game. Anyway, can you imagine Seals being concerned about penalties? They’d fix that problem by tying up the Keystone Kops and removing them from the field of play.

Interesting listen at approx. 40min mark of this interview with Jocko, where his strategies seem more measured and "decentralized," which I trust many would find Rogers espousing/citing when he mentioned veteran leadership
