Re: TV Coverage of the Jacks in South Dakota

Or we could have stayed one state (Dakota) and we could have had one school in Aberdeen and been in the Big 10. When will the madness stop . . . ;D

    Go State! ;D

There also was a proposal to have split the territory along a north-south axis instead of the east-west axis. The division would primarily have followed the Missouri river. And if I remember correctly, East Dakota would have qualified for statehood, however West Dakota would not at that time, which was the major reason the plan was not supported.

Or television stations could choose to air commercials of Super Lucky Charms rather than plain Lucky Charms...ooops...wrong thread.

I can't believe someone didn't have the foresight to appreciate the importance of DI athletics back in the 1800's!! Now we are paying the price. Damn settlers.

Threads here never go where they are supposed to, but it sure leads to some darn funny quotes!

That only really became a problem when you got involved. Before that all the posts were in support of the DI move and strongly pro-SDSU with the exception of occasional losses or misdeeds that lead to criticism. Once again, Mike_H, you tossed in the monkey wrench .

Re: TV Coverage of the Jacks in South Dakota

I just learned three new great pieces of information today even though I grew up in and now live in SD. It is a board of knowledge!

I must admit, having SDSU's campus where "The Pen" currently sits would have been cool. If anyone has been up there, it provides a great view of the city, but the smell is not that great (most of you know what I mean). The Campanile would have looked pretty cool up there....

Anyway, back to the original topic. Does anyone know if any of the Sioux Falls stations are planning to broadcast any of the BBall games?? Perhaps the NDSU game?? I really believe that TV exposure on the local South Dakota stations would go a long way to changing the attitude that SD is a state with several equal universities and start changing the attitude to SDSU being THE university in SD.

Re: TV Coverage of the Jacks in South Dakota

KELO TV signed a contract to broadcast the USD- Augie games, and they have a paid Augie program each week, so I doubt they are in. KSFY has some new management, and I am not sure if they are going for more local type stuff or less. I think more, since they have added a 5pm newscast. KDLT does not have the equipment to pull it off. PAX has gotten out of the local game coverage except for the state tourneys. SDPTV is located in the Al Nueharth building on a campus in an undisclosed location, so I doubt they would be leading the charge. Looks like KSFY would be the best bet.

But again, the games that have been broadcast so far this fall have been afternoon games, and I am not sure KSFY would be able to drop their ABC programming for the night during ratings.

Re: TV Coverage of the Jacks in South Dakota

If USD and Augie got a contract with KELO to have their games broadcast, why couldn't SDSU have gotten some kind of contract to have its games broadcast. It seems to me that this is the responsibility of the Athletic Dept at SDSU and they had better get going on getting SDSU the tremendous exposure and recruiting advantages being on TV gives them.

Don't get me wrong, I want the Jacks on TV, but I think the biggest recruiting advantage that we have is that we are D-I, and TV coverage or not won't change that fact.

                        Go State! ;D

Article at omaha.com that ties into this. It also has something to do with the "now what" thread.

This is exactly the type of thing SDSU needs as it moves to DI, for both football and basketball. Advantages: exposure, recruiting, revenue, changing attitudes. Disadvantages: none. The Athletic Dept needs to get on it.

Also, notice in the story from the Omaha paper that it is Nebraska that is getting on TV statewide, not UNO. This is the same thing that SDSU needs to have start happening, that SDSU is the school that is on TV statewide, and USD is just some DII school playing Peru State.

I realize the difference between Nebraska and UNO is way different than the difference between SDSU and USD, but SDSU needs to start changing this, and has by going to DI.

Re: TV Coverage of the Jacks in South Dakota

Not knowing the particulars of the USD-Augie/KELO deal, here's what I'll throw in to this topic. In the past the SF TV stations have asked to televise games, but haven't offered any $$$$ for the broadcast rights. I would venture to guess that Nebraska is getting a pretty penny to have it's games broadcast (I didn't read the article to know if that was referenced). The point is, SDSU has a viable product to sell, which it should receive compensation for broadcasting. I would guess this is a foreign concept for the SF stations at this point and until SDSU becomes a bigger entity playing bigger teams at Frost or CAS, the stations will be hesitant to pony up $$$ to put games on TV. The mindset is probably that of "we're doing you a favor by showing the game, we shouldn't have to pay you for it". And yes, I know there are some (many) who will argue that at this point SDSU should be happy to be on TV and not worry about receiving financial gains. Well that's just bad business sense to think your product is worth nothing or next to nothing. Build the product, create the demand, then sell it to the highest bidder when they come begging. Flawed logic, I know.

Consider this: SD winter, NDSU basketball coming to town, game set to be broadcast on KSFY. There are probably a number of people who would consider staying home to watch the game on TV rather than traveling to Frost for the game. How does SDSU make up the lost gate revenue?
