    Re: 2005 Recruits

A great coach, which Arlin is, does not make a great broadcaster. That being said, I hate the fact that NDSU has SD athletes on their roster, and I REALLY hate the fact that there are TWO kids from Dell Rapids on the UND roster. Both of them were better athletes than Mitch Klein, but neither of them can match the effort that Mitch will give you on every play and there is no one with a better work ethic than Mitch.

      Re: 2005 Recruits

Don't get too upset about a SD kid going to NDSU. Both NDSU and SDSU will be recruiting strongly in the region and some kids won't want to go to their state's school.

You know how pipelines seem to open for a while from a high school to a particular college or university. Yankton and NDSU have a small diameter pipeline open right now. Yankton kids are having a good experience there and they go home and tell their friends. Happens all the time at SDSU too.

We were on a recruiting trip to NDSU last Spring and the coed who gave us a tour of the campus --- and did a great job --- was from Yankton. Great ambassador for NDSU.

      SDSU has them too.

We'll just have to pound on the Bison in the future: that'll fix them!

Wins are always a great recruiting tool.

I think there are two people at UND that could possibly have played a role in recruiting South Dakota kids.
Roger Thomas spent a few years at Augustana and his wife is from Bridgewater as I understand. I sure Roger built a network of coaches and friends when at Augie and has maintained that network over the years and maybe these coaches encourage kids from SD to attend their camps and send videos to UND.

The other person who probably has the biggest influence is Dale Lennon.  Dale earned his Masters degree at Northern when Stig was an assistant, so their is bond there in that they still commuicate.  I think between the network of Thomas and Lennon, they find players such as the two from Dell Rapids and give them a good pitch to come to UND.  Of course having  8 or more win in several  seasons plus a NC and a runnersup help too in recruiting. Playing indoors in before a 10,000 crowd November is another selling point.

This is why winning and attractive facilities are so important.

Totally agree in that I hate seeing SD players on NDSU's roster. What makes it worse - is that SDSU does not return the favor. I can't recall any ND players on SDSU's roster last 10-15 years. There might have been a few but not many. We even lost a SD basketball player (Ten Broek) to NDSU 6-7 years ago.

              Re: 2005 Recruits

In tenbroek's situation he was from McIntosh SD which is pretty much ND in many ways. He probably spent most of his time and resources in Bismark growing up and would have just a good connection if not better with ND than SD. From experience it seems that a lot of kids from about Aberdeen north (which there isn't much there) are much more fond of the ND schools than the SD schools. It still burns me when we see kids on their rosters however. Especially the two local kids on NDSU's football squad Popowski and Buckwalter. You are correct about us not having ND kids on the athletic teams, but the university as a whole does not draw a lot of kids from ND either. ???

                North Dakota players at SDSU.

Granted not many, but Pete Retzlaff was from Ellendale Nd. Ted Wahl from Jamestown and recently there was Matt Anderson, I believe was from Waphapton. ND.

Don't see many Iowa and Illinois kids on the NDSU rosters but you do on SDSU's.

                    Re: 2005 Recruits

Recruiting is a tricky business, and I suppose it starts with the videos that the coaching staff are now starting to receive and will receive tons of them before Christmas. I am hoping SDSU will start looking in Wisconsin more than they have in the past. I was told that recruiting heavily in Wisc like NDSU, SCSU and Mankato was a budget buster due to the difference between out of state tuition rates. I just hope we can find the best recruits who want to come to SDSU and play their hearts out and if they are from North Dakota, fine, but not a factor if they are not. Mitch Klein is a fine example of what we need in terms of recruits.

We do seem to have some good contacts in Northwestern Iowa, Dusty Snyders, Koeing, Kardoes to name a few from the current roster. We need to continue to exploit what we have going.

SDSU is in the hunt for Jordan Den Hartog of St. Thomas More in Rapid. He has taken an official visit to Iowa, and is also looking at Wyoming. 6'2, 230, RB/LB. He has led STM to the Dome for the first time ever, and you can see him on the tube here in South Dakota Saturday night.

I hope the Jacks are looking at a couple of the big defensive lineman from Sioux Falls Roosevelt. One is 6'8 295 and the other 6'6 290 and they are quick for their size. Another Roosevelt player to watch in Saturdays game against O'Gorman is 6'2 220 lb junior fullback Anthony Thompson. A lot of top notch wrestling schools are after him and I suspect  most of the college football coaches in the region are also aware of him. O'Gorman, Brandon Valley and the three public high schools in Sioux Falls had arguably the best AA teams in the state. I think the pure size of Sioux Falls is finally starting to produce some DI athletes. O'Gorman and Roosevelt play for the state championship on Saturday in the dome. No Sioux Falls public high school has ever won the football championship and this may be there best chance.

Are the SD championship games being broadcasted on the internet like last year? I'd like to watch the Rosy-OG game. Aren't they usually a KDLT broadcast?

I think last year it was SD Public TV.

SD Public TV and PAX for the third year. The contract runs out this year. SDPTV will have it on the internet. The website to start with is www.sdpb.org . You can even go on there and watch games from the last few years, football and basketball, that are archived.

I agree about the Roosevelt kids, but speed is an issue in my mind. But, I've been wrong before!

One other kid's name has come up: Ryan Routh of SF Washington. 6'2", 185. Kim Nelson, his coach, has said that he is the best athlete he has ever coached at Washington. Considering the number of kids he has coached there thru the years, that is saying something. I saw a lot of his games the last couple of years, and he is fast and tough. I think he was hobbled with an injury a bit in the middle of the year, because he seemed to be missing his usual burst. He got that burst back for the last couple of games and looked great!
