This kind of long-term thinking is what SDSU needs to be successful, and would be good follow-through to the D-I move itself.

That way, stusdsu, you can take your grandkids (or, they can take you;-) ) to a Coughlin-Alumni stadium you can be really proud of.
I know they have a strategic plan for the athletic department and I'm sure it includes plans for Coughlin and other facilities. The changes at Frost during the offseason were planned for quite some time.

The scoreboards are just step one. Keep in mind that just as fundraising for scholarships was first, scoreboards are a revenue source, since SDSU owns them and will benefit from the full advertising revenue (unlike another South Dakota university that got in one of those "we give you scoreboards, but we sell the ads and make the money" deals from Daktronics. That's good business by Daktronics, but it wouldn't have been as good a deal for SDSU. They can probably make quite a good chunk of change from sponsorships on those boards (both physical advertising on the structures and programming on the video boards.)

      Re: stadium

I think Kelo (CBS) would be a better choice because they are the only Sioux Falls station that reaches the Black Hills area. There is a large number of alumni in western SD.

Maybe a win-win-win. Maybe not. Live TV is very, very expensive, especially a multi-camera production like a football game. You need an army of people and some very expensive equipment and satellite time. There's a tendency to presume the Sioux Falls media has money, equipment, and staff that it doesn't have.

I suspect they would need some serious guaranteed cash from a sponsor before they'd think about it.

          Re: stadium

I think KELO would be my last choice. All the stations have "working agreements" with Rapid affiliates in regards to sports broadcasting. Acccording to my relatives that live in both central SD and the Black Hills, KELO's reputation is very low. Their station in Rapid is now just a translator of the Sioux Falls broadcast, and most people out their don't like that. I have no stats to back this up, just relaying what I heard last weekend when I was out their for the Super Bowl. This discussion came up because of the completely outrageous weather department on KELO. Is there anyone that takes them (weather) seriously?

You had to mention the KELO weather department, now I have to post this:

Introducing the official KELO TV WEATHER GAME:
            1) Every time you hear the word 'rotation'-take one drink.
            2) Every time you hear 'wind shear'-take two drinks.
            3) Every time Jay Trobec interrupts a street reporter, slam your beer.
            4) Every time Don Jorgenson takes off or puts on his jacket, slam your beer.
            5) Every time Shawn Cable gives the saftey instructions, do a shot of your choice.
            6) Every time you hear the word 'VIPER' make a snake hissing sound...last person to do this must slam a beer.
            7) Every time Jay Trobec tells the guys in the back to move the Sioux Falls Skycam, shout out "Move it yourself you big haired freak!"...last person to do so must do a shot of Jagermeister.

Hopefully, these simple yet effective rules will turn your storm encounters into a much more enjoyable experience.

If you took a drink everytime they said the word "Keloland" you would not pass a sobriety test.

Priceless. Can't wait to play next time I'm in Brookings.

                      Re: stadium

Remember that SDSU has a pretty good campus instructional media operation (or whatever they call it nowadays) -- at least, it was pretty robust when I left campus four years ago.

It would be an excellent educational experience for students to intern on live sports broadcasts, and would cut costs for whatever station carries the events.

Somehow, I think KSFY would be the more likely statewide Jacks TV Network sponsor than KELO . . . I dunno. Down here in Kansas City, the Fox affiliate and an independent channel carry KU's games, so maybe KTTW would step up.

I was wondering about that same possibilities. How capable is SDSU in generating a live broadcasts? I would think the SDSU media operations could supply camera crews and/ or maybe cameras? I think the biggest expense would be in the production truck because I do not think Coughlin Alumni Stadium is TV ready. But it is definitley worth looking into. As I am sure Dr. Oien and his staff have nothing else going on .

By the way does SDSU broadcast a weekly coaches show for Television? If not does any one know why?

Someday....SDSU could look into its own media production like HuskerVision at U of NE. They cover every sport and other activities on campus and commercial stations can just tap into it if they want. Top students serve as commentators etc., gaining valuable experience.

As a former member of Husker Vision I can tell you that it would take a GRAND effort to set up something of the sort. But...you are correct about it being a great learning experience.

Ideally, the ahtletic deparement would take this opportunity to integrate several academic paths into the athletic department. Having business and journalism students serve as marketing and sports information interns would be a great way to add manpower to the department - and there is PLENTY they COULD do if they had the willingness, time, and staff.

With the new scoreboards coming in, I wonder if they are going to have Daktronics create gameday video and graphics, or if they are going to hire somebody to do it. Anyone have any word on that?
