Great game by the Jacks, but the set of downs after they were first and goal was just horrible. Lots of "what ifs" after that mess.

Wish I could of heard the 1st half.

      Very pleased with the defense.

Can't figure out that play call on 1st and goal at the 4.

That does not suggest that respect has not been earned.  It has.  Now, we have to be prepared for Cal-Poly to come into Brookings.  Lets defend the home field and make a statement in the GWFC.  I can't wait to hit the "backyard" next Saturday.  Hope to see you all there.

Nice effort, game we could have won, one opportunity lost, lets not lose any others.  High expectations or no expectations, thats what I say.
I hear what you are saying, but Montana is the #4 team in the nation, and we went into their place with 23,000 + fans and put a heck of a scare into them. I am going to be a proud Alum and will be expecting a big win next week.

        Go State! ;D

I'm a proud alum everyday, regardless of the result of a game.  My point is this; the institution, the students, the alumni and the fans must all expect to be the DI university in the state of SD and represent us all against everyone else.  Especially in the upper midwest.

That said, I applaud the effort and ask that our fans and players expect that every week.  We are all in agreement that Cal-Poly at Brookings next week will be one hell of a battle.

If you are in SD or Western MN or Northern IA/NE or southern ND and want to seen one hell of a FB game be in Brookings next Saturday evening.

If you're young and not too uptight (subtle reference to a few on this site) join us in the "backyard" for some fun with the college kids before and after the game.  I use too look forward to opening duck alone, now I look forward to duck hunting and upper-level DIAA FB.  Now, thats a clear improvement.

Nice showing, now lets build on it.  We need to beat Cal-Poly on our home turf next week.   Anything less and I'll be disappointed.

Jerry said something very interesting right at the end of the broadcast.  He said that Montana will be coming to Coughlin-Alumni in one of the upcoming seasons.  So I guess today's game was part of a home and home series. This is good news.  When the Grizzlies come to Brookings it will be another HUGE game, one I won't miss.  We will also be closer to having all our scholarships.

            Go State!  ;D

If you guys had made a couple fewer mistakes, you would have beat us... for sure. Man, have we got work to do!! Thanks for the game - your fans were great and we hope they enjoyed Missoula.

I was not able to listen to the game. All I know is the score, and from the score alone I can say I am darn proud of every Jackrabbit that was on the field today. So close to a huge win!

Thanks for the effort JackRabbits. Cal Poly is playing Montana State tonite at 7:00 PM mountain. You might want to see what will be coming your way in the future. Bobcat nation .com to get comments and you can get feed at Montana State University (athletics or sports?) for radio type feed. The winner of this game is right up at the top.

I for one hope Cal-Poly wins and comes into Brookings thinking they have us outclassed. I can't wait to take the Mustangs out at CAS.

Me neither. That should've been 4 straight runnning plays. Congrats to the Jacks - you have a helluva football team.

I'm proud of the guys, but just can't believe the play call with 1st and goal at the four. Coaches need to be smarter than that.

Kids got to make plays. Coaches didn't drop the ball. SDSU is always criticized for being too conservative. Kid doesn't make a play---he drops the ball --- now the coaches fault. I'm glad we tried to do something different. Can't wait for next week.

From what I heard from the announcers the play would have worked perfectly had it been executed correctly, as they said the Montana Defense was just standing there watching Kardoes run off the field. Had it been a touchdown we'd all be praising them for a great call. I've always had a problem blaming the coaches for a fumble.

I got to listen to only a few minutes of the game and that occured just before the end of the first half. To hear the Jacks trailed only 7-0 was very encouraging as I have seen two previous Griz-Jack meetings in 1988 and 1993. I don't need to mention 1993 as that game hass been analyzed enough.

The 1988 was nothing like todays game where SDSU was outmatched and some of the kids were very intimidated. We lost 48-18 I believe.

It seemed like the only Jacks who came to play that day were a few lineman, Ted Wahl QB and WR J.D Berreth.

Our program believe it or not has made progress since 1988. Back then the GRIZ picked up on film a bad snapper on special teams and score points on block punts. Be thankful this did not happen today.

As far as Andy Kardoes, I think he is trying very hard and to cross the scrimmage line before passing is something I am sure he feels very bad about and who would not. Our kids need to keep their chins up and come out blazing Saturday night agains Cal Poly. ;D

                                From the ESPN web site
                                http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/recap?...&confId=43

MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) -- Montana coach Bobby Hauck was happy with his defense, and apparently not too worried about his lack of offense, in a 7-0 victory over South Dakota State on Saturday.

Montana (2-1), ranked fourth in NCAA Division I-AA, shut out the Jackrabbits (2-1), who had averaged 55 points a game in their first two outings. They also held SDSU to 108 yards in total offense, sacked quarterback Andy Kardoes five times for a loss of 30 yards, and held them to just 2-of-14 on third-down conversions.

"The defense did a good job today. It was an overwhelming effort," said Hauck, who said the lack of scoring "doesn't matter. A win's a win." However, he later said, "What we need to start doing is finishing drives."

Lex Hilliard rushed for 128 yards and a first-quarter touchdown. His 3-yard score capped a nine-play, 54-yard drive and gave Montana a 7-0 lead with 4:18 left in the first that would hold up for the rest of the game.

The Grizzlies never really threatened again, crossing into South Dakota State territory only one more time on a drive that stalled on the Jackrabbit 40-yard line early in the fourth quarter.

South Dakota State punter Neal Bainbridge repeatedly pinned Montana deep in its own territory throughout the second half.

"I'm sure nobody expected us to only score seven points," said Montana quarterback Jason Washington, who completed 18-of-29 passes for 114 yards. "We had a good drive in the first half and scored. After that, they just kept pinning us inside our 5."

Hauck said, "If I was South Dakota State, I'd give their punter a game ball."

South Dakota State also struggled with field position and couldn't cross the goal line when they got close, fumbling the ball on the Montana 27 with 16 seconds left in the half.

The Jackrabbits' best opportunity to score came with about eight minutes remaining when Josh Davis partially blocked a punt by Tyson Johnson, giving SDSU the ball on the Montana 43.

They drove to the Montana 4 on a 16-yard pass from Andy Kardoes to Davis with 2:30 remaining. But on the next play SDSU fumbled on a direct snap to running back Cory Koenig and recovered the ball on the Montana 18.

"It's a play we added because we knew we were facing a dominant defense," said SDSU coach John Stiegelmeier. "I told our coaches to try to figure out a way to win the football game. I think it was a tremendous play call. ... But just like anything else, you've got to execute."

Kardoes passed to Micah Johnson in the end zone on the next play, but the score was nullified because Kardoes had crossed the line of scrimmage. After two incomplete passes, SDSU turned the ball over on downs and Montana ran out the clock.

"The one time they did get down near our end zone, we just weren't going to let them in," Hauck said.

Jon Talamage led all Griz receivers with nine catches for 62 yards and Mike Murphy had two sacks.

Kardoes completed 9-of-24 passes for 80 yards and was intercepted by Jimmy Wilson.

"I was feeling pretty uncomfortable in the pocket all day," he said. "You've got to credit their defense."

Anthony Watson had 16 carries for 54 yards, 94 below his season average, and Johnson led the SDSU receivers with two catches for 33 yards.

Montana hasn't been scored on in its two home games this season. The Grizzlies beat Fort Lewis 55-0 in their season-opener.
